Fortnite has a brand new primal-themed season and a new crafting system to go with it. Epic Quests are asking players to craft all sorts of new weapons, which can be a little tricky to get used to at first. Bow quests can take a long time to complete if you don’t know what you’re looking for or where to find it. This guide will detail exactly how to craft every bow in Fortnite.

Best Location for Crafting Bows
If you have a quest to craft multiple bows, it’s recommended you land at Weeping Woods or its surrounding area. Weeping Woods is one of the best locations for crafting Mechanical and Primal Bows in Fortnite because it has every ingredient needed fairly close together. It doesn’t yield as much loot as places like Holly Hedges or The Spire, but you have time to search for ingredients instead of desperately searching while getting shot at by Deadpool and a banana.
How to Craft Bows in Fortnite
Bows have 6 different versions; 3 Mechanical and 3 Primal—but what’s the difference? Mechanical Bows require mechanical parts to start crafting, and Primal Bows need animal bones. Each branch has 2 unique Epic Bows that you will need additional ingredients to upgrade to.
To craft a bow when you have all the required ingredients, press up on the d-pad (if you’re playing on console) and then press RB/R1 to navigate to the crafting menu. Use the d-pad to find the Bow you want to upgrade, and then select the type you want to upgrade to. Press X if playing on Xbox systems or Square on PlayStation, and you’ll have yourself a brand new bow!
Here’s every ingredient list and the best locations to find these ingredients for crafting every bow in Fortnite:
1. Mechanical Bow
The ingredients needed to craft a Mechanical Bow are:
- A Makeshift Bow
- x4 Mechanical Parts
There’s no special place to find a Makeshift Bow, but they’re an Uncommon drop (green), so it shouldn’t take too long to locate one. Just be sure to look out for a green-glowing bow.
To acquire mechanical parts, you need to destroy vehicles. That’s any car, truck, boat or caravan. Any place with 4-6 vehicles should be enough. It’s recommended to smash them until they’re down to 40 HP and then stop; otherwise, you’ll get a nasty explosion for your troubles.
The quickest place to get mechanical parts is at Compact Cars. The mini-junkyard usually drops 12 parts when all of the flattened cars are destroyed.
Other areas for farming mechanical parts are:
- The drive-in movie theatre, north of The Spire
- Durrr Burger
- The caravans and cars found north-east of Weeping Woods
Any large named area should have a lot of vehicles, but they will also have a lot of people landing there. So, it’s best to go for smaller areas.
Talking to NPCs will sometimes get you 2 mechanical parts. Additionally, some NPCs stock mechanical parts that can be bought for 10 gold per part. It’s not the quickest or surest method, but if you’re in an area with an NPC, it’s worth a shot.
2. Mechanical Explosive Bow
The ingredients needed to craft a Mechanical Explosive Bow are:
- A Mechanical Bow
- x6 Grenades
A Mechanical Bow can be found anywhere there is loot, but it’s a Rare (blue) item, so it’s easier to land at a good location for mechanical parts and upgrade a Makeshift Bow. See above for recommended landing spots.
6 Grenades sounds like a lot to search for, but they spawn in stacks of 3, so only 2 stacks need to be found. There’s no secret to locating grenades, so just make sure you’re searching every chest, loot llama, and area you come across. They are Common (grey) items, so you shouldn’t be wading through loot for too long before finding 2 stacks.
3. Mechanical Shockwave Bow
The ingredients needed to craft a Mechanical Shockwave Bow are:
- A Mechanical Bow
- x2 Shockwave Grenades
As previously stated, you can find a Rare (blue) Mechanical Bow anywhere, but it’s easier to get mechanical parts to upgrade a Makeshift Bow to a Mechanical Bow. See the Mechanical Bow entry above for suggested landing spots.
Shockwave Grenades drop in stacks of 2, so you only need to find 1 stack of them. That doesn’t sound hard, but they’re an Epic (purple) item, so they don’t have a great spawn rate. The only thing to do is search every chest, loot llama, and area you come across. Make sure you’re always scanning an area for purple items.
4. Primal Bow
The ingredients needed to craft a Primal Bow are:
- A Makeshift Bow
- x4 Animal Bones
A Makeshift Bow is an Uncommon (green) item, so it can be found anywhere there is loot. Animal bones are trickier to come across.
One way to acquire animal bones is to eliminate chickens, boars, and wolves. Chickens drop 1 bone, a boar drops 2, and each wolf drops 3.
Boars and wolves are more likely to spawn in wooded areas (anywhere there are clumps of trees), and chickens are likely to be found around farms. They wander around, so there aren’t many guaranteed locations for finding one quickly. Taking a trek through Weeping Woods should turn up a few animals, though, as long as another player hasn’t got to them first.
If you’re feeling spicy, Colossal Crops has a pen that always holds 3 boars in it at the start of every match. There are also animal bones to be found by smashing tables with bones on them inside the buildings and chickens dotted about the area. The only thing stopping Colossal Crops from being a perfect location for animal bones is that a lot of people drop here.
Like mechanical parts, talking to NPCs will sometimes give you 2 animal bones, and you can buy some from certain NPCs for 10 gold per bone.
5. Primal Flame Bow
The ingredients needed to craft a Primal Flame Bow are:
- A Primal Bow
- A Jar of Fireflies OR a Gas Can
Primal Bows can be found anywhere, but it’s quicker to land at a good location and craft one from a Makeshift Bow. See the Primal Bow entry for the best locations to do this.
Fireflies are found in wooded areas or around campsites at night. Be on the lookout for orange-yellow dots fluttering around; these are fireflies. They can also be found as loot, but this is extremely rare. Weeping Woods is a good place to look for them if you’re already there hunting for animal bones.
Gas cans spawn around vehicles or at gas stations. The more vehicles in an area, the more likely it is that a gas can will be found. They also drop as random loot, but if you’re searching for one, it’s best to head towards vehicles or gas stations.
6. Primal Stink Bow
The ingredients needed to craft a Primal Stink Bow are:
- A Primal Bow
- A Stink Sac OR x3 Stink Fish
As mentioned above, Primal Bows can be found anywhere, but it’s quicker to land at a good location and craft one from a Makeshift Bow. The Primal Bow entry has recommended locations for doing this, but for the Stink Bow, the Weeping Woods is a good place to explore.
Stink Sacs can be found by eliminating frogs. Frogs stick close to water, so the best way to search for one is to follow a river.
Stink Fish always come in stacks of 3 and can be found in any body of water. A fishing rod is needed, and these can be found as random loot or in barrels by certain fishing spots. When casting your line, make sure you can see fish or bubbles in the water, or you’ll just be wasting your time.
A solid method for constructing a Primal Stink Bow is to head towards a river when you have a Primal Bow and fishing rod, and then look for frogs and Stink Fish at the same time.
Now that you know how to craft every type of bow in Fortnite, you’re ready to complete quests easier and eliminate players with a weapon made from a frog’s stink sac—beautiful!
