Hero Choice – Outlander or Ninja?

When first booting up Fortnite you are placed into the shoes of the Soldier class. However, it is not long until you can have a try at the other three classes: Constructor, Outlander, and Ninja. The Constructor class is unlocked quickly; and from that point on you have a choice between the Outlander or Ninja class. I recommend you take the opposite path to what I chose; I recommend that you choose the Outlander class first. The reason for the Outlander class? It is immensely powerful, as once chosen, nearby treasures will be illuminated through walls, allowing you to harvest a lot of loot quickly.

Loot being found thanks to the Outlander's ability.Heroes in Fortnite have multiple levels. However, unlike the majority of other games XP is not gained via mission completions. Instead, upon completing missions and finding loot you may be awarded "Hero XP Boosts." These allow you to boost a character's XP gains by a specific percentage. These can be activated by heading to the menu, choosing the "Hero" option, selecting the Hero you want to boost XP for, before finally choosing "Improve/Inspect" in the bottom right. From here, you can activate these Hero XP Boosts, boosting that characters XP gains.

Upon assigning ten levels to a specific hero, you will need to evolve that hero to progress further. These levels allow you to unlock new abilities and skills. Be warned! Classes have multiple hero cards. These different heroes have their own set of skills. You should read the descriptions of all these cards carefully, choosing one that suits your gameplay style best.

Here is a brief summary of the classes:

Soldier: This class focuses on firearms and improving the damage they deal along with their health.
Constructor: This class centres around building bigger and stronger forts.
Outlander: The Outlander class can find loot in the world easier, and that loot will be of a better quality.
Ninja: Ninja's feature close-up melee weapons and increased movement speed.

The technique of creating stronger forts

Fortnite has three different type of materials you can harvest. In order of strength from lowest to highest, they are Wood, Stone, and Metal. Wood can be harvested from wooden structures, along with trees and poles. Stone comes from walls, roads, and rocks. Finally, Metal can come from mines, vehicles, and metal poles.

Wood should be used for exploring. For example, if you need to access a roof you should build a wooden staircase. You can also use it for lower level missions if you can trust your aim. Adapt yourself to the difficulty of the mission. An example of this would be when in the final phase of the main mission, the game will tell you where enemies are coming from. Therefore, you can build as much as you want before triggering the waves of zombies. White indicators on the edge of the mini-map symbolise these enemies. So, if there is a lot of them be ready to take them all on.

Fortnite - The Beginner's GuideA good tip to remember is that zombies will take the simplest route to try and kill you: A small serpentine-like maze full of traps will not work well – the zombies will just tear down walls to reach what you are defending, moving in a straight line. Instead, create straight corridors full of traps, structures with tier 3 metals surrounding a tunnel, defending the area as much as possible. Alongside that, try to eliminate opponents as quickly as possible.

Exploration is worthwhile

Upon starting missions you can explore the area. Do not hesitate to explore everything thoroughly. Whilst you do have the challenge to finish the mission in two days, 100% map exploration pays more. By doing this exploration, you can gain better resources and improve your arsenal by finding treasures. Everything in Fortnite is destructible. So, whilst searching containers do not be afraid to swing your pick (which will improve over time in the talent tree) to gather even more. Underground areas can also provide you with rare ores, so be sure to check in there.

Exploring also gives you an opportunity to find survivors to join you. Secondary missions, the majority of the time, will allow you time to perfect your construction skills by using schematics to craft weapons and traps from your materials.

Skill trees – Complex but Critical

The upgrading in Fortnite is quite complex. The skill tree within the game is divided into separate levels. Each box represents a skill you can buy in exchange for points earned after each mission, which starts at one but will slowly increase. As you are just starting out, upgrading new classes should be what you are focusing on.

From there you have Research Trees. These are distributed in the same way as the skill tree; however, in order to unlock these skills, you have to use a 'currency' that accumulates over real-world time. This only goes up to a certain amount, and earnings beyond that amount are automatically destroyed. Therefore, you should check back into the game regularly to ensure this does not happen.

Weapons cannot be repaired

Fortnite is a game where almost anything can be upgraded, from weapons to heroes. Weapons do not last forever though. Each weapon has a durability that decreases with use. Once the weapons durability has decreased completely the weapon will be destroyed and replaced by the next most powerful weapon you have. There is no way to repair your weapons. So when a weapon's durability is getting low you should head to your inventory and recycle it. This allows you to gain materials you would have lost if you let the weapon get destroyed. Schematics are the solution to this. These are key to Fortnite. Schematics stay with you forever. They can be improved, and you can create them as many times as you want. All you have to do is head to the schematics menu and get to work.

Fortnite is an incredibly deep and complex game. Starting off can be tough as you can be easily overwhelmed. However, these tips should allow you to get the most out of your first few hours of Fortnite and progress further into the game.
