Tuanjie 1.0.0, Unity-based Game Engine for the Chinese Market

Unity China officially launches a Chinese edition of it's own ubiquitous game engine, Tuanjie 1.0.0 (Also referred as "Genesis Edition"). Based on Unity 2022 LTS, this iteration includes backend support for Chinese platforms like OpenHarmony, AliOS, and WeChat.

One year after the announcement of Unity China in August 2022, the real-time development platform unveiled Tuanjie, a game engine tailor-made to amplify Unity’s scope within the region. “Tuanjie” (团结), meaning “Unity” in English, is based on Unity 2022 LTS and includes support for WeChat‘s Weixan Mini Games, Alibaba’s AliOS, and OpenAtom’s OpenHarmony. After four months of closed internal testing and technical iterations, Tuanjie 1.0.0 officially launched on January 1st, 2024*.

According to an industry report on the gaming industry from Reuters, the regional video game market surpassed $42.6B. With mobile gaming earning nearly half of that revenue in 2023, a 300% surge from previous years, mobile games being the focal point of growth has become somewhat of a consensus in China.

In an effort to aid local developers corner the market, Tuanjie 1.0.0 provides a platform for WeChat Mini Games. The game engine performs as another natively supported platform in addition to iOS and Android. Game developers can now easily convert games onto WeChat that originate from different platforms.

Unity’s role in the development of smart cars has gained major prominence since it’s inception in 2004. Under the current trend of “software-defined” automobiles, Unity landed in over 60 production models from 24 car manufacturers in just a year’s time. As a 3D content creation tool with the advantages of lightweight, HD images – Unity renders a whole new point of competition in the automobile industry.

Tuanjie Engine boasts a special platform provided by Unity China for car companies and their developers to rely on Unity’s advantages to empower their manufacturers with unique engine capabilities, rendering services, and specified development tools that are better suited for vehicles.

Since its emergence in China in 2012, Unity piloted some of China’s most viral gaming sensations – Genshin Impact, Gunfire Reborn, and Honor of Kings, most notably. Unity China manifested from Unity Technologies’ growing need to navigate China’s increasingly strenuous data-flow regulations. One month after the announcement of Unity China, the company had an estimated worth of $1B and was fully operational. Unity China boasted investments from regional heavyweights such as Alibaba, miHoYo, and the state-backed China Mobile. Nonetheless, Unity Technologies retain majority ownership and control of Unity China.
