Destiny 2 | How to Get the Dawning Memento (Winter Night Guide)

In this quick and easy guide, we'll show you how to easily complete the Winter Night Dawning quest and get multiple copies of the new flashy Dawning Memento in Destiny 2. After the success of Festival of the Lost's unique Memento, Bungie has released a new one for this year's Dawning, giving Guardians 3 weeks to collect a sweet new collectible which will give their crafted guns a frosty edge.

Bungie seems to have found the thing it needs to make seasonal events in Destiny 2 at least a little bit enticing with the addition of exclusive event-themed Mementos. After languishing in neglect for over a year, Guardians got their hands on the first new Memento last season during Festival of the Lost and it was a big hit, giving players something new and shiny (well, leathery) to chase for the event’s 3-week duration. Well, it seems like that’s going to be the standard moving forward because we have another new Memento to hunt for in the 2023 version of the Dawning, Destiny’s winter holiday event.

Similar to the Lost Memento from last season, the new Dawning Memento will give any crafted weapon it is slotted onto access to a few cool cosmetic options, the most notable of which is a special textured Shader. However, another similarity with the Lost Memento is that it’s only around for a limited amount of time: once the Dawning ends on January 2nd 2024, this Memento will be unavailable to earn and become a collector’s item. The icy shader it gives is really cool so, to make sure that you have enough copies to freeze your entire arsenal, we’re here to guide you through how to get this new Memento and how to get more copies of it.

Here’s how to obtain the new Dawning Memento, and get additional copies of it, in the 2023 version of The Dawning in Destiny 2

How to Get the Dawning Memento

To obtain the new Dawning Memneto during the 2023 edition of the Dawning in Destiny 2, you’ll need to complete a new quest called Winter Night. This quest becomes available after progressing through the introductory stages of the Dawning event quest, at which point you can accept it from Eva.

The quest itself heavily revolves around the Stasis Snowball mechanic, which has been overhauled slightly in the Dawning 2023. Once all of the objectives for this quest have been completed, return to Eva and she’ll give you your first Dawning Memento. Do note that there are ways to get additional copies of the Dawning Memento later on but, to unlock those, you need to complete the Winter Night quest first.

Winter Night Quest Objectives

In order to complete the Winter Night quest, you must complete the following objectives:

  • Defeat combatants with snowballs (75 Snowball Final Blows)
  • Defeat combatants with snowballs that have the Long Winter and Stay Frosty Upgrades unlocked (25 Upgraded Snowball Final Blows)
  • Bake a Classic Butter Cookie for Eva

At a glance, this seems like a pretty easy selection of objectives, especially thanks to the change where the Dawning weapon and ability kills generate snowballs while you’re in Vanguard Ops or patrol. However, the main issue is the second objective because it requires purchasing three of the Holiday upgrades. At a minimum, you will need to purchase the Long Winter, Longer Winter and Stay Frosty Snowball Upgrades from Eva before this step can progress: this means earning, then spending, 60 Dawning Spirit which, while not overly difficult, can be a bit annoying if you’ve been using Spirit for other upgrades or Engram decoding.

Easy Winter Night Completion Method

To get the Winter Night quest done as quickly as possible in Destiny 2, there are a few things you’ll want to do. Firstly, the Classic Butter Cookie that Eva wants requires 1 Taken Butter, 1 Superb Texture (gained by defeating opponents with Super abilities) and 10/15 Dawning Essence to bake. This is a pretty easy ask as all you need to do is head to an area like the Dreaming City and kill Taken with your Super until you acquire the ingredients you need. Don’t worry about the Essence for now.

The second part has to do with the Snowball kills. We recommend heading to an easy Lost Sector on patrol and farming it repeatedly while you have a Dawning primary equipped such as the Cold Front or Stay Frosty. Not only will you be spawning snowballs at a pretty decent rate, but this method will also net you a lot of ingredients and a lot of Essence as you’ll gain 3 Dawning Essence whenever you open the Lost Sector Cache at the end. If you have the Starfarer 7M Exotic Ship equipped, you’ll also be earning a boatload of Dawning Spirit, making the process go even faster.

As you build up ingredients and Essence from doing these runs, you’ll quickly gain enough to bake a bunch of cookies. Each time you give a cookie to a vendor, they will give you about 3 Dawning Spirits in return.  As such, you’ll want to farm Lost Sectors for quick Essence and ingredient gains alongside your Snowball kills then bake cookies to earn Dawning Spirit which you can trade in for the necessary Snowball Upgrades

When you eventually get enough Spirit to purchase the Stay Frosty Snowball Upgrade, you should be close to the 75 kills you need for the first objective. Then, just continue farming enemies in patrol or Lost Sectors. Once you get the 25 Upgraded Snowball kills, simply return to Eva and claim your Dawning Memento from the quest.

How to Get Additional Dawning Memento Copies in Destiny 2

While getting one copy of the Dawning Memento is pretty straightforward (at least compared to the Lost Memento) how can you get additional copies of it?

Once you’ve completed the Winter Night quest and received your first Dawning Memento, they will begin dropping randomly from opened Gifts in Return. You’ll receive a Gift randomly when giving vendors cookies, as well as from the Boon of Friendship item which Eva gives you once per day. Usually, these Gifts will award you with random upgrade materials such as Prisms or Cores but, with the Memento unlocked, they’re your path to additional copies.

However, there are two main things to point out. Firstly, you can carry one copy of the Dawning Memento in your inventory at any one time. Just like all other Mementos, you cannot have more than one Memento in your inventory at any one time. Secondly, you can also use Gifts in Return to obtain Dawning weapons from Eva’s Engram Decoding. As such, you may want to consider which you would prefer to use your Gifts on – a possible Memento or a guaranteed Dawning weapon.

Fortunately, there may be a trick to get around the first issue. While it’s true that you can only hold one Memento in your inventory (which is shared across all characters) you can store at least one more copy in your Postmaster. If you get an additional Memento to drop while you already have one in your inventory, it will go to your Postmaster instead (this will only happen on your first extra Memento). As such, if you switch characters, you can technically store up to 4 Mementos at once so keep that in mind if you want to stockpile Dawning Mementos but are unsure about which weapons to graft them onto.

Dawning Memento Overview

Now that you’ve got one (or a few) copies of the Dawning Memento on hand, what does it actually look like? Well, you won’t instantly gain access to the special limited Shader as soon you slot it onto your crafted weapon: instead, you’ll need to reach certain weapon level requirements to unlock different cosmetic features of the Memento.

  • At weapon level 1, the Memento will give your weapon a special Dawning-themed Tracker. This will record how many Snowballs you’ve created with this weapon equipped (the weapon itself doesn’t have to create the snowball).
  • Then, at level 20, the Memento will unlock the Winter Night Title for your weapon.
  • Finally, once you hit level 30, you can slot the unique Dawning Memento Shader onto your crafted weapon.

The Dawning Memento Shader you’ll unlock goes by the name Rime Keepsake and you can find it next to the other Mementos, which are in The Witch Queen era of Shaders. As for how it looks, the Shader will give any crafted gun a special icy texture, similar to the leather Lost Memento: fitting the cold, frigid theme of winter, Rime Keepsake shades your weapon in various types of ice. From thick, rigid patches of crackled frost to smooth areas of unsettled snow, it’s certainly one of the best-looking Shaders around, especially on weapons with a lot of different textures like the Dares of Eternity or Crota’s End weapons.

This is a quick reminder that, in addition to regular crafted weapons, you can also slot Mementos onto Enhanced Adept Weapons from the Root of Nightmares and Crota’s End Raids. And that was how to get the new Dawning Memento, as well as how to get additional copies of it, in Destiny 2’s Dawning 2023 event. Remember that this Memento is only available for a limited time and, if you don’t manage to get it before the Dawning leaves on January 2nd 2024, you’ll be unable to get it. As such, make sure you grind out and freeze all your desired weapons before the New Year hits. Happy Dawning, Guardians!
