How Do Raid Challenges Work?

In case you’re new to the game or don’t know how Raid Challenges work, here’s a quick rundown to inform you of everything you need to know.

Once Raid Challenges go live, one encounter per week (beginning with the first encounter) will have an optional challenge added to it. These Raid Challenges often impose some form of restriction or tricky requirement that must be fulfilled to be completed, awarding additional loot and rewards if your fireteam is capable of doing so.

Each Raid has several Raid Challenges equal to the number of major encounters for that Raid. For Root Nightmares, there are 4 Raid Challenges which correspond to the major encounters of the Raid: Cataclysm, Scission, Macrocosm and Nezarec. The Raid Challenges are on a weekly rotation starting with encounter one and rolling over to the next encounter at the start of each weekly reset.

The main reason to complete Raid Challenges is the additional loot. In Normal Mode, these offer an additional pinnacle reward or an additional chance at a God Roll. In Master Mode, the reward is a bit sweeter with the chance to acquire an Adept weapon.

Now that we’re all caught up on how the Raid Challenges work, how do you beat the Crossfire Raid Challenge in Destiny 2?

Root of Nightmares Raid Challenge: Crossfire

The Crossfire Raid Challenge takes part in the second encounter in Root of Nightmares, Scission. This is the encounter which introduces the Flux of Darkness buff alongside the Field of Light buff and asks Guardians to complete each node sequence while ping-ponging back and forth over a gaping chasm.

To complete Crossfire, there is one big thing that must be done or else you instantly fail the challenge. For this challenge, to cross the chasm and complete the sequence, players on the opposite side must be responsible for shooting the launcher splinter.

To cross the chasm in Scission, players will usually stand on a launcher that, when activated by shooting a device in front of the launcher, will propel any Guardians standing on it to the other side. For this challenge, you cannot shoot the activation devices for your own launchers and must instead rely on the opposing side to do it for you.

For example, if the Field of Light player needs to cross the chasm, they need to stand on the launcher and call out that they need to be sent over. Then, someone on the Flux of Darkness side must be the one to shoot the launcher device and send them across. If any player shoots a device on the same side as they are standing on, the Challenge instantly fails.

This Raid Challenge is a little more tedious than it is difficult. You need to be on your toes and communicate with your team at all times. Dawdle too much and you’ll run out of time. It should also be noted that you cannot cross the chasm using other means like Eager’s Edge or Icarus Dash as that will instantly fail the challenge.

How to Complete Crossfire

At the beginning of the encounter, split up the teams as normal with one person running for each buff (one Flux of Darkness runner and one Field of Light runner). The main bulk of this challenge is on the shoulders of the runners, so if you get put into the add-clear group, just slay out to your heart’s content and keep everyone safe. As for the runners, they’ll need to be able to roughly keep up with each other and have weapons that shoot to the other side of the chasm.

Begin the run as normal, with each runner activating their first node before heading over to the first launcher. When both runners are there, have each one shoot the activation mechanism on the opposite side of the chasm – so the Field of Light runner needs to shoot the device on the Flux of Darkness side, and vice-versa – to send both players over. You’ll need to do a countdown to when you shoot so one player doesn’t get sent over before the other one does.

Once the runners are on the other side, continue as normal by activating nodes as quickly as possible. Eventually, you’ll need to cross the chasm again which means needing to countdown and shoot the opposing side. Repeat this as many times as necessary to complete each floor.

Another big thing is that this mechanic still needs to be honoured when going up to the next floor. When you complete a floor and the players on each side group up on the launcher to ascend, make sure the opposing side is the one to shoot it: slipping up here and shooting your own splinter is an easy way to fail.

Keep up this rhythm for all three floors and, eventually, the Crossfire challenge will be complete.

Crossfire Step-by-Step Guide

If you want a step-by-step guide to the challenge:

  1. Start the encounter as normal and continue until the runners need to cross the chasm with their respective buffs.
  2. Have each runner stand on their launcher but shoot the splinter for the launcher on the opposing side.
  3. Once both runners have made it to the other side, continue activating nodes until you need to cross again. Repeat step 2 each time they need to cross.
  4. Keep this up until you complete a floor and need to head up to the next one. Make sure to always have the opposing side shoot the device, even when just going up to the next floor.
  5. Rinse and repeat this for all three floors and you’ll be done.

Additional Loot

Now, what do you actually get for going through all this? If you’re able to complete the Crossfire Root of Nightmares Raid Challenge on Normal mode, you’ll get an additional chest filled with loot from the Scission encounter. This loot will be an additional pinnacle and has a chance to be any of the weapons or armour from the second encounter.

From this additional chest, you can get:

  • Mykel’s Reverence Strand Sidearm
  • Nessa’s Obligation Void Shotgun
  • Acasia’s Dejection Solar Trace Rifle
  • Koraxis’s Distress Strand Grenade Launcher
  • Legendary Arms (Gauntlets of Agony, Grips of Trepidation or Wraps of Detestation)
  • Legendary Chest (Plate of Agony, Vest of Trepidation or Robes of Detestation)
  • Legendary Legs (Greaves of Agony, Boots of Trepidation or Boots of Detestation)

However, something different awaits if you manage to complete Crossfire on Master mode difficulty. The chest will instead spawn a guaranteed Adept weapon from Root of Nightmares. Adept weapons provide stat boosts to all of your weapon stats upon Masterworking, as well as being able to equip exclusive Adept mods. For the RoN weapons, specifically, will be the first weapons to access Bungie’s Enhanced Weapon feature. This allows them to be upgraded and levelled like craftable weapons. This feature is set to release later this season and will retroactively apply to your RoN Adept weapons.

That was how to complete the Crossfire Root of Nightmares Raid Challenge in Destiny 2. The next challenge is Cosmic Equilibrium which takes place in the Macrocosm encounter.
