How Do Raid Challenges Work?

In case you are completely unaware of how Raid Challenges work, here’s a quick rundown.

Once Master Mode has launched for a new Raid, that Raid gets access to Raid challenges. In Normal mode, these can be completed for bonus loot drops from that specific encounter. Meanwhile, in Master Mode, completing these challenges is the way to net yourself Adept Raid loot.

There are an equal number of challenges as encounter that give loot. For Deep Stone Crypt, for example, there are 4 Challenges. For King’s Fall and Vault of Glass there are 5.

The Challenges rotate weekly starting with the first encounter and cycling through. After 5 weeks, it will go back to the first encounter Challenge. All Challenge completions are required for the Raid Seal. You must also complete them on Master Mode, too.

Now that we’re all caught up on how the Raid Challenges work, how do you specifically beat the Grass is Always Greener?

King’s Fall Raid Challenge 1: The Grass is Always Greener

This challenge takes place at the Basilica encounter (otherwise known as Totems). This is the first actual encounter after the start of the Raid where you have to open the portal in the Court of Oryx. Usually, players would run a relay back and forth from two Deathsinger Totems on the left and right side rooms.

Kill adds while on the Totem to build up Deathsinger stacks and wait for an ally to approach. Someone else takes the Brand buff from you using an item dropped by a Taken Knight, and then you return to the middle to deposit stacks. Rinse and repeat until the door opens. You’ll have to contend with adds and Unstoppable Champions while you’re at it.

For The Grass is Always Greener, you can mostly go about your business as usual. There is one catch, however.

Players cannot have the same Brand twice in a row.

Brands

Brands

The left and right sides each have their own unique Brand. Left side is Brand of the Weaver, right side is Brand of the Unravelled. These spawn at the entrance to the left and right side rooms when the encounter begins. You can see which buff you have in the bottom left alongside your other buffs and debuffs.

In order to complete this challenge, players cannot take the same buff twice. If you start with Brand of the Weaver, you cannot get it again until you get Brand of the Unraveler once. Depending on your team’s coordination and ability, this may be a bit tricky. So how do you actually do it?

The Strategy

For this challenge, split up into 2 teams of 3 as usual. 3 people go to the left, 3 people go to the right. The main thing to pay attention to is that now, after doing your duty at the Totem, you must kill the Taken Knight on the opposite side of where you took the Totem.

For example, if you begin on the left side with the Brand of the Unraveler, return to the middle and deposit your Deathsinger stacks. Usually, you would then go and kill the Taken Knight on the left side platform – instead, go to the Knight on the left. Kill it, take the Brand and then run down to the person standing on the left-side Totem.

Royal Opening

Every player will have to do this song and dance so keep an eye on whom you are running to. A good way to keep track of whom you are giving the buff to and who is taking it from you – AKA who are you running to relieve from Totem duty, and who is doing that for you. By remembering this you can make sure your team is on the right track and going the correct way.

If you happen to die while mid-run, you may be able to salvage it. However, it is likely safer to just wipe due to how it disrupts the entire chain of command. If one person falls, the rest of the group will need to shuffle about to correct the order and it just isn’t worth the time.

Keep all of this up until you make it to the other side. Congrats! If everything went smoothly, you should have completed the Challenge and scored yourself some extra loot.

Available Loot

So, what can you actually get from this encounter? Well, in Normal Mode, it retains the same drop pool as is found in the ordinary Raid chest.

This includes:

  • Doom of Chelchis Void Scout Rifle
  • The Qullim’s Terminus Stasis Machine Gun
  • Legendary Chest Armour (War Numen’s Chest/ Darkhallow Chiton/ Chasm of Yul)
  • Legendary Leg Armour (War Numen’s Boots/ Darkhallow Treads/ Path of Xol)
  • Legendary Class Item (War Numen’s Mark/ Darkhallow Mantle/ Bond of the Wormlore)
    Harrowed Smite

    Harrowed Smite

As for the Master Mode variant, completing the challenge nets you the chance to get one of the Adept (or Harrowed) versions of any of the 6 King’s Fall weapons. This includes weapons that do not usually drop at this encounter, such as the Smite of Merain.

That is how to complete the Grass is Always Greener Raid Challenge for King’s Fall in Destiny 2. The next challenge is called Devious Thievery and is focused on the War Priest encounter.
