Destiny 2 | Best Way to Get the Allstar Vector Skimmer (Easy Hoverboard Guide)

Want to know the best method for acquiring the Allstar Vector, the brand new Skimmer vehicle type, in Destiny 2 based on your playstyle and preferences? Then check out this guide for more information, including some tips and tricks on how to use the new vehicles. Skimmers are hoverboards and all players can get one - the Allstar Vector - for free during Guardian Games 2024.

Destiny 2 | Best Way to Get the Allstar Vector Skimmer (Easy Hoverboard Guide)The Guardian Games have arrived in Destiny 2 once again for their fifth reappearance and their appearance marks an interesting point in the game. Not only does the coming of Guardian Games All-Stars mark the arrival of a major mid-season patch which brings several new weapons to endgame PvE and PvP, a loot refresh in the free Prophecy Dungeon, and big updates to the Crucible sandbox, but it also heralds a brand new vehicle type joining the game alongside Sparrows.

Skimmers are a brand-new vehicle class which are similar to the hoverboards used by the Cloudstriders on Neomuna. With them, Guardians will be able to zoom around the map at super speed, performing tricks and grinding on thin air as if it were nothing. They’re a super fun and exciting addition and, what’s even better, all players can get their hands on the Allstar Vector, one of these new Skimmers, for completely free as part of Guardian Games 2024. However, the method of acquiring the Skimmer can be a bit laborious so we’re here to show you how to get it in the most efficient manner.

Allstar Vector Skimmer Questline in Destiny 2

To obtain the Allstar Skimmer, you need to complete the Drop In quest in Destiny 2. You will acquire Drop In after progressing the Guardian Games All-Stars introductory quest, Best in Class.

There are two great things about the Drop In quest. The first is that, as soon as you accept it, Eva will give you a Common-rarity version of the Allstar Vector to try out until you get the real thing, allowing you to test out the Skimmer’s unique movement options right away. This trial version only last until the end of Guardian Games and it will disappear from your inventory if you do not get the real thing by the end of the event, so keep that in mind.

The second major thing is that there are a total of three objectives available for Drop In and completing any one of them will complete the quest and give you the Allstar Vector. Those objectives are:

  • Get a Medallion Score of 1,200
  • Earn a top 10% score in the Nightfall Competitive Playlist
  • Open your Focus Activity winner’s packages 3 times

These objectives differ greatly in difficulty, time commitment, and skill level, so deciding on which one to prioritise can be difficult, especially if you want to get your hands on the Allstar Vector as soon as possible.

All Drop In Objectives Ranked

1,200 Medallion Score

The first of the Drop In objectives which could earn you your Allstar Vector is to simply reach a Medallion Score of 1,200. Each time you bank a medallion into the podium back at the Tower, you will gain points towards your Medallion Score based on the rarity of the medal. The higher the rarity of the medal, the more points you’ll get. All you need to do is contribute enough medals of varying types to reach a total score of 1,200.

At first glance, this may appear to be the most onerous objective of the three, especially when Bronze Medallions only give you a mere 1 point. Fortunately, the higher rarity Medallions like Platinum and Diamond give a ton of points, making the process a lot more bearable than it first appears. This is also the only method where you have direct control over how quickly it progresses, unlike the other two methods which rely on either a full fireteam or an entire class pulling their weight. If you’re capable of farming out Platinum Contender Cards and are willing to do so, you can rush through the score requirement in no time.

Furthermore, one of the three methods to get a Diamond Medal, the highest and most valuable type of medallion, is to watch 2 hours of a Destiny 2 stream on Twitch during that week. With this in mind, you can easily acquire a super valuable medal while grinding out other Contender Cards, letting you zoom through the 1,200 Medallion Score required for the Allstar Vector.

The main concern with this objective is simply the sheer amount of points you need. Even if you’re banging out Platinum Contender Cards like no one’s business, you’re still going to be at this for a while.

Earn Medals in Guardian Games Playlists

Earn Medals in Guardian Games Playlists

Top 10% of Nightfall Score

The second proposed method of completing the Drop In quest is to get a score in the Competitive Nightfall playlist which is within the top 10% of all player’s scores. The Competitive Nightfall playlist is one of the four available activities that Guardians can partake in for Medals during Guardian Games and, just like regular Nightfalls, they task players with taking on one specific Strike while earning points for taking down Champions, killing enemies, and earning Accolades. Once the Strike ends, the total score will be tallied up and, if your team scored enough to be within the top 10% of all players, the Skimmer will be yours.

In theory, this is, bar none, the fastest method of acquiring the free Skimmer. Thanks to the heightened energy recharge rates, most fireteams will blitz through the Nightfalls in the Competitive playlist, especially if everyone is spamming Supers. Additionally, you can earn tons of points by emoting before defeating a Champion with a Finisher: manage this and you’re looking at 10,000 points with every single Champion. As you can imagine, there’s no shortage of ways to earn points, making this an excellent way to get the Skimmer easily.

Coast on Through

Coast on Through

However, issues soon arise when you realise that everyone will be having the same thoughts. Because runs are relatively quick in the Competitive playlist, everyone is going to try and snag an easy objective clear. This means more people running the activity, which means the overall score increases, which means a higher threshold to reach that illustrious top 10%. Soon enough, the only teams capable of reaching that high score in the latter half of the week will be teams who can coordinate.

As of writing, not even a full day into Guardian Games, you need to score over 225,000 points to get in the top 10% and that will only increase. Unless you get in on the ground floor at weekly reset or have a very dedicated team who can get the maximum amount of points in each run – killing Champions with a Finsher after emoting, deliberately leaving high-value targets alive so you can farm adds, going after specific high score Accolades – this will be very hard to achieve.

Focus Activity Winner’s Packages

The final way of obtaining the Allstar Vector is to open three Focus Activity winner’s packages. New for Guardian Games All-Stars is the Focus Activity system. As described in our Guardian Games 2024 guide, one of the Guardian Games playlists will become the featured playlist every few hours. For the next two hours, Guardians who participate in those activities will earn points for their pledged class, with different reward packages becoming available as your class hits certain milestones. Then, at the end of those 2 hours, whichever class has the highest overall Focus Activity score will be awarded a winner’s reward package, which appears in their inventory.

When compared to the other two Drop-In objectives, opening Focus Activity packages is the most straightforward method of acquisition. Instead of needing to complete Nightfalls on repeat or beat an entire Raid with only one class, you can just sit back and wait for the Skimmer to come to you: all you need to do is equip the Allstar Class Item and be on the winning team during each Focus Activity.

Additionally, because of how class weighting works, Hunters are far and away the best choice if you want to get this method done efficiently. Not only do they have the highest population but also, as of the time of writing, they’ve won both of the current Focus Activity events. As such, if you can play a Hunter, pledging to them during each Focus Activity will be massively beneficial.

The major downside to this method is the time investment. The gap between each Focus Activity is about 5 hours and, with the events themselves taking 2 hours, you’re looking at almost a full day’s worth of waiting around to get the Skimmer, and that’s assuming you’re in the winning class all three times. As such, not only are you going to be sitting around, waiting for the quest to complete, but you also need to rely on the strength of your class and hope that everyone is pulling their weight.

Best Way to Get the Allstar Vector in Destiny 2

So, of the three objectives listed in the Drop In quest, which one is the best way to obtain the Allstar Vector? Well, the best method for acquiring the Skimmer depends on several factors including your skill level, whether you have a premade fireteam, and the overall amount of time you have to burn.

  • If you have a premade fireteam of high skill and can coordinate with one another for Champion Finishers, getting in the top 10% of the Competitive Nightfall Score should be your priority. The longer you leave it into the week, the more difficult this option will become so try and get it done as soon as possible for the best chance.
  • If you have time on your hands and want to get this done without much effort, the Focus Activity winner’s packages are the best option. While it will take much longer to obtain than if you were actively farming Nightfall Score or Medallions, it is a passive way to get it done. As for class, try and pledge to Hunters for the greatest chance of early completion.
  • If you’re able to efficiently acquire Platinum or Diamond Medallions by farming Contender Cards, go for the Medal Score. This method is good if you’re trying to get the Skimmer a little later in the week when the Nightfall Score is too high.

Another thing to mention is that the Medallion Score objective can be contributed to while you attempt to complete either of the other two objectives. By picking up either a Platinum Nightfall Contender Card or a Contender Card for the current Focus Activity, you can knock out two birds with one stone and progress multiple objectives at once. This way you can either get lucky or contribute towards the Medallion Score, so keep that in mind when choosing where to spend your time.

Skimmer Tips and Tricks

Eventually, you’ll obtain the Allstar Vector and permanently unlock your first Exotic Skimmer in Destiny 2. What’s so special about these things compared to Sparrows? Firstly, Skimmers are far more mobile and allow for better traversal options than Sparrows. Not only are they able to make sharper turns, but you can press the fire button to jump into the air, giving you additional height and mobility. This also means that Skimmers are harder to control, giving them a steeper learning curve when it comes to figuring out the ins and outs of traversal.

One of the coolest features of the Skimmers is that they come with a built-in grind rail. Once you’re in the air, press the crouch button to begin grinding. At this point, your Guardian will turn the board sideways and begin summoning a strange, phantasmal rail to grind on. So long as you have energy remaining in your Skimmer (which you can see in the bottom left of the screen), you will continue grinding in the air, no terrain necessary.

Let's Get Tricky

Let’s Get Tricky

Lastly, just like how you can use a small selection of emotes on the back of a Sparrow, pressing the direction buttons will make you perform a variety of tricks. These can also be performed while grinding, allowing you to live out all your Tony Hawk Guardian dreams. As a little side note, the trail on the Allstar Vector will change colour based on which class is riding it, whereas the colour and effect of the grind rail will change based on your currently equipped subclass.

Skimmers are a super fun vehicle type and have a ton of potential when it comes to speed and manoeuvrability, especially when it comes to chaining grinds together to fly through the sky infinitely, which can be achieved by hopping off your Skimmer when it runs out of fuel before resummoning it mid-air. Once you’ve tried one out, it’ll be hard to ever go back to a Sparrow, so make sure to grab yours before Guardian Games ends.

That was the best way to get the new Allstar Vector Skimmer, the brand-new hoverboard vehicle class, in Destiny 2. If you don’t complete the Drop In quest by the end of Guardian Games 2024 on March 26th, you will lose access to the Allstar Vector, so make sure to get it before then.
