Almost six years after release, Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ 3.0 update. Version 3.0 contains a paid version and a free version; the free version has something called the Kapp’n’s Family Island Hotel. But you can’t start a new island and get it immediately; you’ll need to complete some base content first.
1. How to Unlock the Kapp’n’s Family Hotel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Hotel will appear on the dock that will be on the far left or far right side of your island, the same location you can take a ride with Kapp’n to get to other islands. Neither of these will be available until you see the ending credits with the K.K. Slider concert.
Items Unlocked After Completing ACNH
- Kapp’n island tours
- Hotel
- Terraforming and Ordinances
- ABD on your Nook Phone
- Brewster’s Cafe
- Cooking
- Storage Sheds
- Harv’s expanded Island
- Gyroid Fragments
Once you have completed the game, Isabelle will speak about the Hotel during her normal morning announcements. The Hotel will not be available that day; it will take a whole day to finish building it so you can enter.
2. Kapp’n’s Family Hotel Guide
The Kapp’n’s Family Hotel works a lot like Lottie’s Happy Home Paradise DLC, which was a paid Animal Crossing: New Horizons DLC released in 2021. You will need to decorate a themed or non-themed room, and they can be regular or VIP rooms.
How Decorating Works at the Kapp’n’s Family Hotel
Leilani will be waiting for your help with getting the hotel rooms ready for guests. When decorating a room in the hotel, you will need to take into account a theme if it has one.
To complete a themed room for the first eight rooms:
- Talk to Leilani.
- Choose one of two themes (the first room will have one theme).
- The furnishing menu will show curated items for that theme.
- Decorate with at least three of the themed items.
- Talk to Leilani to complete the room.
- You can do two rooms a day.
To complete a themed regular room or VIP room after all eight have been decorated once:
- Talk to Leilani.
- Choose Regular Room.
- Choose which room to update.
- You then get to choose if you want to start over or make changes.
- Choose I’ll Choose a Theme or I Don’t Need a Theme.
- Choose from one of the at least 15 themes.
- If you choose a theme, you will get access to themed items.
- If you choose to not have a theme, you will only have access to souvenir shop items, items you have owned, or ones you can DIY.
- Only one room will earn you tickets per day, but you can decorate as many as you like.

- The items reset weekly.
- The first four items for the week have a multiplication bonus.

How to Use the DIY Box

3. Design Features in the Kapp’n Family Hotel

Everything you need to know about your hotel guests:

What are Wandering Guests?
On occasion, you will see a guest to your island that is wandering around slowly, looking down at their feet. They have the ellipsis over their head that means they have something to say to you. These are guests looking for lodging.
- Wandering guests won’t be wearing the hotel’s clothing.
- They will have an ellipsis over their heads.
- They are looking for a place to stay.
- You can choose to walk them to the hotel to get them a room.
- You will be teleported to the hotel.
- Choose to put them in a VIP room or a regular room.
- If you choose a VIP room, you will need to redecorate it. You will get 300 or 200 tickets.
