Every month, players get together and vote on which Villagers are their favourite in Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Animal Crossing Portal. This list of the most popular Villagers for September 2020 covers the Villagers that have been voted for this month. A vote is taken at the start of the month, and in the middle, so I’ll be updating it accordingly as the data comes in. Be sure to check back around the middle of September to see which Villagers are the most popular.

1) Merry
Merry has absolutely blown the competition out of the water in the most popular Villagers for September 2020 list. She saw a lot of movement towards the end of August, but now she’s top of the list. Why is that? Well, Merry has been the subject of what might be the first ever example of a streamer using their influence on the Villager popularity list.
No one knows which streamer this was, but the Animal Crossing community all latched onto Merry’s popularity, and this is the most consistent story. According to most fans, the streamer asked their viewers to go and vote for Merry, and that’s how she moved up. If the streamer already had Merry on their island, and was planning on selling them on the Animal Crossing black market, this would be the first ever instance of Animal Crossing insider trading. As you can see, Merry is just cute enough to get away with all this shady business, though.
2) Marshal
Marshal has dropped to second this month, relinquishing his place to Merry. This little squirrel is a firm favourite among Animal Crossing fans for a couple of different reasons. First, he’s adorable. He’s a tiny white squirrel who will chatter away to himself, even when you’re nearby. It’s beyond cute to watch, and that’s what makes him so lovely. The second reason he’s so popular is his fashion sense. He has some awesome outfits, and will always compliment you on what you’re wearing. He’s generally just a great Villager to have around for positive reinforcement.
3) Raymond
We all know who Raymond is. He’s the smug Villager with the eyes that don’t match. He was the most popular Villager in the game for a few months in a row. Now however, his popularity is waning. This is partly due to Marshal being much cuter, and Merry’s massive boost. However, the consensus with Animal Crossing fans is that they’re quite bored of seeing him at the top of the list. This month’s most popular Villagers list might be the last time we see him.
4) Sherb
Sherb has dropped a fair bit since August. He’s got lovely blue fur, but that will only take him so far. No one in the community is really that bothered by him. He’s a Villager who is nice to have around, but I don’t think anyone would now actively go searching for him. Personally, I think he’s a bit weird. He keeps asking me how he smells, then telling me he hasn’t bathed for a few days.
5) Zucker
Zucker is sitting firmly in fifth. He hasn’t moved for about one month now, which is great for foodies. He’s probably the most recognisably food-inspired Villager after Merengue. His head resembles a tasty Japanese treat, and the developers even put a toothpick in his hair, which is meant to be the sauce. I’ve seen a lot of players trying to collect all the octopus Villagers on their island, which may be what is keeping Zucker in this top five position.
6) Judy
Judy is a much loved Villager, but I think some players are getting sick and tired of her personality. Her eyes are the reason that she’s so desirable. No other Villager has eyes that come close to being as sparkly. However, she’s always going on about how great she is, and how awful all your lazy Villagers are to be around. If, like me, you’ve accumulated a number of lazy Villagers, then you’re also probably quite close to kicking her out.
7) Marina
Marina is the second octopus Villager in this list. She, unlike Zucker, is not inspired by food. She’s actually an octopus Villager inspired by the sea, and the octopus (obviously). Her name means marine, and refers to the sea. She is the embodiment of the ocean, but for some reason she prefers pink over blue. That love for pink is what has driven her popularity though, and she’s rising up the ranks this month.
8) Roald
I think everyone knows that Roald is a Villager inspired by a famous explorer by now. He recently dropped out of the most popular Villagers list entirely, but has now made a tremendous comeback in eighth place. His popularity is almost certainly driven by the fabulous clothes he wears. Whether he’s dressed as a lumberjack, or in a suave tuxedo, he’s always overdressed, and that’s what we love about him.
9) Merengue
As I mentioned earlier, Merengue is the Villager who is most obviously inspired by food. Her horn is a strawberry, and her head has cream on it before changing into pink, which runs over the rest of her body. She’s inspired by strawberry cheesecake, and is a pretty accurate representation of it. Her popularity is falling slightly, but I think she’ll still stick around for a few months yet. I can barely look at her. Not because I don’t like her, it’s because I get too hungry when she’s around me.
10) Ankha
Anhka is a snooty cat Villager, and a unique one at that. She’s styled after a sphynx, and fills her house with Egyptian items. She fell down quite far in the list last month, but is now on the rise once again. She can be quite hard to get on with. Most snooty Villagers have some friends at least, but Ankha seems to have a problem with just about everyone.
11) Stitches
Thankfully, Stitches is seeing a fall in the list, and will hopefully be out of it for good this month. He’s a charmingly teddy Villager, but he’s made from the scraps of abandoned bears, so not quite as charming as you’d think. I don’t like him, but I can see the appeal. Especially with younger players. I think the reason he’s stuck around for so long is because he’s quite colourful. He does brighten up an island, that’s for sure.
12) Audie
Audie is a legendary Villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. She’s likely inspired by the mayor in a town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that an 89-year-old player put more than 2,500 hours into. There was recently an update on that player, and how her island was going in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
13) Fauna
Lovely Fauna is seeing a small rise in popularity this month. Aside from watering your plants for you, she’s always got something nice to say. She’s a Villager that you need to have around if you just want to have your day brightened every now and then. We all need a mental health boost every now and then. It’s why I play Animal Crossing: New Horizons. With Fauna on your island though, any day, no matter how awful, can be redeemed.
14) Dom
Dom is a fabulous Villager. His rainbow horns and tie-dye t-shirt have made him a pride icon in the game. He saw a huge surge in popularity around Pride Month, but he hasn’t fallen out of the list just yet. I think that we’ll see Dom sticking around for a few months yet. He embodies the essence of being yourself. In most games, it’s not possible to fully customise your character. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can customise your island however you want, though. Choosing which Villagers you have is part of that customisation, and I think that Dom is a big help to many people who feel lonely, or are struggling.
15) Beau
Beau is becoming a bit of a bro in the Animal Crossing world. He’s a lazy Villager, and just about manages to get on with everyone, as long as they aren’t snooty. He’s always sleeping or eating, which can be a bit of a put off. However, he’s always up for a laugh, and is great for a quick chat. He’s not a very useful Villager, it’s just good to see him as you walk around your island. I think this could be the last week we see him in the chart, though.
That is the current list for the most popular Villagers in August 2020 in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Be sure to check back in later, because I’ll be updating the list with the most accurate vote then.
