Animal Crossing: New Horizons Tops UK Sales Chart

Animal Crossing: New Horizons tops the UK physical sales chart, becoming Nintendo's second most successful game launch. Id Software's Doom: Eternal comes a close second, though sales are down from its predecessor. We may see a slope in physical purchases due to the Coronavirus over the coming months.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is selling gangbusters!

Nintendo’s latest exclusive has seen skyrocketing sales, tripling the boxed copies sales of its closest rival, Doom: Eternal. These sales make the game Nintendo’s second-biggest launch, behind Pokémon: Sword and Shield. According to gamesindustray.bizAnimal Crossing: New Horizons has sold more copies than all other instalments combined! These sales figures don’t account for digital sales, so we could be looking at the biggest game launch ever for the console. We’ll hopefully get these numbers from Nintendo at some point soon. Despite critical acclaim, Doom: Eternal saw physical sales fall by a third from 2016’s Doom. These numbers will be mitigated by digital sales, as people are less likely to venture outside during this time.

What Effect Will The Coronavirus Have On Physical Sales?

Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons released on the same day, placing them at the top of the charts.

Physical sales have remained buoyant across the board, no doubt an outcome of people preparing to self-isolate for the foreseeable future. Whether physical sales can withstand the next few months is more uncertain. Governments around the globe are taking stricter precautions concerning Covid-19, meaning many “unnecessary” businesses are been forced to shut. Gamestop, the most prominent games retail store in the US, has closed all its stores after facing a backlash for their lacklustre response to the virus. The company went as far to provide staff with notes explaining why Gamestop was an essential business, just in case the police happened to stop them to enquire why they were out. Expect to see an increased focus on digital sales over the coming months.
