The Sims 4: Businesses & Hobbies — A Complete Guide to Starting and Running Your Small Business

The Sims 4 has often accustomed us to numerous DLCs, and the new "Business and Hobbies" expansion pack is no exception. Ten years later, MAXIS Studios continues its momentum and offers us a new way to enjoy the game.

The Sims 4 Businesses and HobbiesHave you already played with The Sims 4 “Get to Work” expansion pack? Tried to manage your bakery, your clothing store, or any other retail business? Well, in The Sims 4 “Businesses and Hobbies” expansion pack, a whole new experience awaits you. What’s on the agenda? Business creation, greater freedom in your field of activity, new skills…

A new world available: Nordhaven

Nordhaven, the new flagship location in The Sims 4 “Businesses and Hobbies” expansion, consists of 12 lots spread across two neighborhoods. We first come across the former industrial district and continue to the old town. This world is entirely designed to promote businesses, community activities and entrepreneurship. It’s also a world that allows us to diversify our desires; the addition of a new town always brings something extra to the overall game and encourages the imagination of new stories for our Sims. You can learn more in the special guide on the world of Nordhaven.

Start Your Own Business

The concept is simple: why stick to the basic careers in the game and not see your Sim perform? Or why go to work every day with your character only to become a Doctor, Detective or Scientist and have to follow tasks (only if you have The Sims 4 “Get to Work”)? Forget all that! Or at least… set it aside while you enjoy the new feature of this new expansion pack The Sims 4 “Businesses and Hobbies” with a focus on creative and artisanal entrepreneurship, featuring: painting, baking, sewing, pottery, selling services (lessons, coaching of all kinds…).

You can also create a custom business at home or on a community lot as you wish with the advantage of having great freedom in choosing your activity—everything you couldn’t do before is now possible!

  • To start your business at home: Use the selection tool to define the space dedicated to your activity.
  • To start your business on a community lot: Buy a lot for a small business and let your imagination do the rest.

All that’s left is to manage your business wherever it is:

  • Use the ticket machine to set up entry or time spent.
  • Manage customer rules to customize your clients’ experience.

New skills to enhance the experience

With The Sims 4 we were already used to new skills with every expansion pack. While the base game already offers 17 skills, the expansion packs, game packs, and kits have added a great many more. There are now around 60 registered skills!

The Sims 4 “Businesses and Hobbies” therefore adds two new skills that can be fully developed as a business:

  • Tattooing: Become a tattoo artist! Offer predefined, custom or tribute tattoos, create unique tattoos thanks to the Tattoo Painting world and share them via the Gallery. With this skill, let your freedom of expression run wild and create tattoos entirely to your taste. Show off your talent! As you improve your skill, your Sim will unlock stamps, stencils, and the ability to do touch-ups, increasing your chances of achieving better results. Good to know: All tattoos can be layered.
  • Pottery: Let your imagination run free, create wonderful ceramic objects and apply various glazes. Through hard work, your Pottery skill will increase with the pottery wheel, unlocking more creations such as functional teapots, flower pots, incense burners, and much more. You can then finish your pieces in the pottery kiln, which contains different options depending on the glaze you want. At the highest skill level, you will be able to master the Japanese art of Kintsugi* to repair your broken ceramics or create new original pieces.

*Kintsugi means “golden joinery” in Japanese and allows you to restore broken or damaged objects by joining the pieces together with a preparation of gold powder.

A reinforced reputation system

Reputation already existed in the game but you now have a new feature: business reputation. No more only worrying about your Sim’s reputation! You will now also have to take care of your business’s reputation, which can take on three different forms:

  • Utopian: As its name suggests, this is the highest level of benevolent reputation, also focused on quality.
  • Dishonest: Ethics aren’t really the most important thing for your business, you will prioritize profit.
  • Neutral: The perfect balance between benevolent quality and the profit generated by your business.

Each reputation level will unlock specific benefits that can influence the management of your business, so it’s not a factor to be taken lightly.

Family Recipes, a Well-Kept Secret

Among the new features, you will also be able to create unique family recipes with secret ingredients that only your Sim will know! These recipes can be passed down to future generations if you decide to add a legacy aspect to your experience. Your Sim’s children can add a new secret ingredient or continue with the family recipe shared across generations—keep the tradition or add a modern twist, the choice is yours!
