Mike Pondsmith, the creator of original Cyberpunk 2020 Pen&Paper RPG system, spoke about his first attempts to design the Night City. For a reminder, the city will be fully explorable in Cyberpunk 2077, an open world RPG from CD Projekt RED, the creators of The Witcher series. Some interesting facts about creating CP 2020 were unveiled during PAX West panel.
According to Pondsmith, the very first prototype of Night City was created in SimCity, on the 8-bit computer, Apple II. You may recall Sim City as a strategy game but the fact is that its original version was designed as a tool that allowed developers to connect the assets from different games.
While working on Cyberpunk 2020, Mike Pondsmith designed six districts of Night City with each of them having its unique characters, type of society, megacorporations, powerful people who control the area, gangs, and many more. Districts were connected all together and Pondsmith made sure to mix them in a way that the city would be hard to travel through but the player should now everything that is needed to make choices.
More of that, Pondsmith admitted that CD Projekt RED made a good use of source material that he provided them.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on PC and current-gen consoles.
