Earlier yesterday, (Aug 20) the official twitter for Cyberpunk 2077 received backlash due to a response to Twitter user @rysteez.
Twitter user rysteez responded to a tweet that Cyberpunk made earlier that day in relation to Gamescom. The tweet in question was "I WANT MORE GUYS", to which the Cyberpunk twitter replied with "Did you just assume their gender?!". What would seem like a fairly innocent joke due to a grammatical error, (Not putting an apostrophe at the end of GUYS to create a possessive noun.) has had a ton of backlash for the official Twitter account.
People have responded in defense of both sides, with some Twitter users defending the tweet as nothing more than an innocent joke, while others have had harsh criticism of the game's developers. Among these people have claimed that through this tweet that the game is alienating its audience, as well as showing signs of transphobia.
Earlier today, (Aug 21) the Cyberpunk twitter would issue an apology, stating that "Harming anyone was never our intention". Ironically enough this apology has seemed to draw even more ire towards the team, with backlash from both sides of the argument. One side says that they should never have reacted to those complaining about the tweet, meanwhile the other has said that the apology wasn't sincere enough.
Regardless of what the intention of the original tweet was, it would be hard to argue that the PR for Cyberpunk 2077 has taken a hit because of it. Dou you think the comment went too far, or that it was just an innocent joke? And what did you think of the apology the official twitter made? Discuss it in the comments below.
