Cyberpunk 2077 Sells 20 Million Copies

Cyberpunk 2077 has hit a major sales milestone. The game, which released in December of 2020, has sold 20 million copies. This is no small feat. Few manage to reach this level of sales success. And, with the recent launch of the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it seems now is a good time to be CD Projekt Red.

The developer released a tweet stating:

The sales for Cyberpunk 2077 are indicative of a potential turnaround for the game. Having released to poor reception from fans, it seemed to many that any hope of a future for Cyberpunk 2077 was decimated. Now, this may no longer be the case.

Considering the news that the DLC expansion Phantom Liberty is coming in 2023, now seems like the best time for a change in reception to happen. The developer has also stated that over 1 million players were active last week and the concurrent player count on Steam is the highest its been in a year and a half. Not only does it appear that the sales for Cyberpunk 2077 seem to be doing well, player engagement is up.

It is also possible that the release of the anime and news surrounding the expansion has inspired players to explore Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time. It is indicative of the power of continued support for games that will increase player counts over the lifespan. We also see the impact of having a multi-media product, using the IP to introduce to allow newcomers to experience the game, possibly being previously unaware of its existence. Regardless, the release of further content will not have hurt the 20 million sales that Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved.

It would appear, from the sales data, that Cyberpunk 2077 may be heading in the direction of redemption. However, it may well be too early to speculate on these matters. Regardless, CD Projekt Red are surely very happy at passing this sales milestone.
