The Mage-class hero Jaina Proudmoore is the Harry Potter of Hearthstone! This is a deck-class that boasts some of the best spells in the game. Therefore, Mage decks typically rely on spells a bit more than most other hero classes. Tempo, Secret, and Highlander are some of the more prevalent Mage deck types. These are a few of the best Mage cards in Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
1. Fireball
Fireball is a basic four-mana spell that inflicts six damage on a selected target. This is among the best Mage cards in Hearthstone, as six damage for four mana is very decent value. Fireball is a flexible card that you can target a minion or your opponent’s hero with. It’s always a great finishing card to have up your sleeve that Taunt minions can’t block. You can also give Fireball a boost with Spell Damage minions to make it even better. As a basic card, it will always remain a staple for Mage decks.
2. Flamewaker
I’ve seen Flamewaker wreak havoc on the board enough times to convince me it’s one of the best Mage-class minions. This is a three-mana 2/4 minion you can craft for 100 Arcane Dust. The card inflicts two damage randomly on enemies every time you cast a spell. Flamewaker is the cornerstone of Tempo Mage decks that include a number of low-mana spells. When you play a few cheap spells with Flamewaker on the battlefield, it can wipe out quite a few enemy minions. So, this minion always poses a considerable threat when you’ve got a lot spells to trigger its effect with.
3. Reno the Relicologist
Reno the Relicologist inspired the Highlander Mage deck type that remains prevalent in the standard game. It is a legendary 4/6 minion you can play for six mana. Reno boasts a potent Battlecry that inflicts 10 damage randomly among enemy minions on the battlefield when your deck doesn’t include any duplicate cards. Therefore, Highlander decks don’t include any duplicates to ensure this card’s Battlecry always comes into effect. With that Battlecry, you can wipe a lot of low-mana minions off the board or eliminate a high-mana minion when it stands alone. The attraction of Reno is limited to Highlander Mage only, but it’s a must-have card for that deck type.
4. Frostbolt
Frostbolt is another basic Mage card with universal appeal. It’s a two-mana spell card that inflicts three damage to and freezes any selected target. In theory, that actually makes this card a bit better than Fireball as two Frostbolt spells (amounting to four mana) will inflict six damage and also freeze the target. This is a great value spell with a freeze bonus that can certainly come in handy for containing a minion you can’t eliminate on the turn it’s played. As Frostbolt is a low-mana card, it’s also easy to combine it with Spell Damage minions.
5. Polymorph
This basic four-mana spell is one the best hard removal cards in Hearthstone. Polymorph turns a selected minion into a 1/1 sheep. Nothing is more hilarious than turning a mighty eight, nine, or even 10-mana enemy minion into a sheep. This card is ideal for dealing with enemy minions that have potent Deathrattle effects, as it transforms them, rendering them unable to. It will eliminate any kind off effect a targeted minion has. The 1/1 sheep Polymorph leaves behind can be brushed off the board with the Fireblast Hero Power.
6. Luna’s Pocket Galaxy
Pocket Galaxy is a legendary seven-mana spell that reduces the mana cost of all minions in your deck to one. That means you can play the likes of Alexstraza, Malygos, the Lich King, and Dragonqueen, along with all other minions, for just one mana after you’ve played Pocket Galaxy. So, this is certainly a must-have card for Control Mage decks that will include more high-mana minions.
Pocket Galaxy’s only drawback is that it’s a high-mana spell, which doesn’t have any impact on the turn you play it. However, you can reduce the mana-cost of Pocket Galaxy with the likes of Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Furthermore, you can also play it in combination with Novice Engineer or Arcane Intellect to draw cards on the same turn.
7. Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a common 3/2 minion that’s widely included in numerous Mage deck types. This card boasts decent stats for a two-mana minion. However, Sorcerer’s main attraction is that it reduces the mana cost of all spells in your hand by one for the duration it’s on the battlefield. This is another key card for Tempo Mage decks that’s especially effectively when paired with Flamewaker on the board. It’s also a great minion to pair with Archmage Antonidas. Furthermore, this is a Classic card that’s always available in standard.
Those are some of the best Mage cards in Hearthstone that can have a big impact on matches. Astromancer Solarian, Arcane Intellect, and Arcane Breath are also three other Mage cards well worth noting. Take your pick from some of those cards to give your Mage deck a bit more magic.
