League of Legends Patch for 2026 has dropped with the turn of the year bringing new items, role quests, gameplay systems and of course, the usual Champion adjustments. Typically the most volatile time of the year, the removal of Atakhan, Crystalline Overgrowth, Role Rebalancing and Critical Damage Changes make the game a new experience for everyone involved.
With the numerous changes and many Champions having their numbers shifted around due to item synergies and role quest changes, expect matchups to go differently and items to give different strengths to every Champion.
New Gameplay Systems
The new Role Quests, Items, Minion Frequency, and other Objective Changes make the game play fundamentally differently from previous patches. This will likely lead to a shuffling in role popularity, with ADC and Top gaining relative Power Budget compared to other roles as an individual, while Mid loses a lot in individual power and is forced into a more roam-oriented supportive role.
Support and Jungle gain quests which help them fulfill their roles better, which makes a lot of the solo queue dependent on funneling Gold into bot or top, winning through hype carrying from one or the other position. In this, Mid losing agency will likely lessen its popularity, while solo laners who want agency in the game going top, and those who want resources pumped into them are likely playing ADC.
More minions and the New Plating system makes standing Gold more accessible around the map, and locks laners into lane in order to complete their quest and gain relevancy in the game. Without Atakhan, the game is harder to end without bigger leads, with initial Barons that are available sooner not leading to game ending pushes, and scaling from positions of power becoming important.

Patch Note Changes
The Patch Notes are lengthy with many of the Champions being adjusted for the item changes and their stats being shifted around due to the gameplay systems and their specific interactions with the new items which are generally situationally strong rather than broadly used.
Champion Buffs
The buffed Champions include:
- Aatrox
- Ashe
- Cassiopeia
- Graves
- Jax
- Master Yi
- Quinn
- Taliyah
- Tryndamere
- Varus
- Viego
As far as buff lists go, the list for the two patches is short and fairly tame, although it seems reasonable to try and keep the Champions in a stable state with the numerous changes that occurred with the new features being injected into the game. Some of the meta definers including Taliyah and Varus are here, along with strong solo queue picks such as Graves and Viego, which make the list fairly suspect but probably balanced out next Patch when there is more concrete and consistent data to go off of, with a month worth of play informing more flat buff decisions.
Champion Nerfs
The nerfed Champions include:
- Aphelios
- Caitlyn
- Corki
- Draven
- Gangplank
- Garen
- Gwen
- Jayce
- Jinx
- Jhin
- Kayle
- Lillia
- Malphite
- Nilah
- Nunu
- Rammus
- Sivir
- Smolder
- Tristana
- Twitch
- Viego
- Yasuo
- Yone
- Yunara
- Zedd
Those of you that are sharp eyed will see that many of the Marksman and those who build Crit are on the nerf list, and this is due to the Critical Damage Changes enforced in the new Season, which makes Crit Damage more inbuilt. To counteract this, a lot of the Champions that have access to such damage from their kits will have their multipliers toned down to adjust for these realities.
Outside of these changes, it makes sense to tone down Lillia, Malphite and Gwen as they were very strong towards the end of last year in specific roles, and frustrating as fairy unpunishable blind picks.
Champions Adjusted
The adjusted Champions include:
- Akshan
- Aphelios
- Ashe
- Elise
- Graves
- Kindred
- Lucian
- Miss Fortune
- Nilah
- Quinn
- Rengar
- Samira
- Senna
- Shaco
- Tryndamere
- Xayah
- Zeri
The Adjustment list also includes a bunch of Crit Marksman and those with Critical Multipliers having their numbers being rebalanced with the new Critical Damage systems in place. Aphelios is strong to start the new year at the highest level of play, and will be interesting to see how he shakes out, as him being strong will still have him likely with a low pick rate due to the Champion piloting difficulty he demands both in mechanics and knowledge.
How the rest of the Patch will land is very confusing as the numbers merry go round at the start of the season never really makes much sense, but seeing Champions on the fringe such as Quinn, Kindred and Tryndamere perhaps get a push would be encouraging. Equally, champions such as Rengar and Akshan should hopefully be toned down or lose some power budget as their notoriety as solo queue stompers has remained for years without any loss in identity.

Item Reworks and Adjustments
The item and rune reworks and adjustments include:
- Bandlepipes
- Echoes of Helia
- Essence Reaver
- Fiendhunter Bolts
- Fimbulwinter
- Hexoptics C44
- Horizon Focus
- Infinity Edge
- Lord Dominik’s Regards
- Mortal Reminder
- Muramana
- Redemption
- Sundered Sky
- Symbiotic Soles
- Tear
- Umbral Glaive
- Unending Despair
- Vigilant Wardstone
- Yun Tal Wildarrows
- Zeke’s Convergence
Some Champions will really enjoy the returning items such as Gunblade and Stormrazor, while others such as Caitlyn will love the new niche items like Hexoptics. Essence Reaver also being massively buffed, made Champions that built it much stronger by proxy. The changes to underused items like Umbral Glaive should push it closer to relevancy.
As far as niches go, the changes to Unending Despair, Tear Items and those of LDR and Mortal point to items fulfilling more specific niches rather than being strong in broad strokes, making items probably feel more potent in the niches they occupy while regressing less to the mean. This will make itemisation feel impactful and make game specific build paths more optimal and feel satisfying if done correctly. It is a change that probably makes those more knowledgeable about Champion and Item State stand out and gain advantages those with lesser knowledge will not.
The 26.2 Item Changes are also more catered to making sure the power budget of the niche items make them worth keeping in the game, and toning down Bandlepipes as a must buy for the support position, which is a beneficial and proactive approach as many meta defining items for support role tend to stay in power for too long.
