New Champion Yunara and Reviewing July Patch Notes

League of Legends post MSI has included buffs to Azir in the Patch Notes, introduced a new ADC and buffed the more frustrating Champions in the pool again. Some underpowered Champions have received buffs and adjustments to make them relevant again, while the fiesta of top lane meta shifts will continue with key Champions rotating in and out of meta.

New Champion Yunara and Reviewing July Patch Notes

League of Legends introduced Ionian Markswoman Yunara, the Patch Notes made heavy adjustments to champions and made Item and Rune changes to give a fresh perspective of the game post MSI. The key takeaway will be large buffs Ziggs and Fizz, a nerf to pro meta supports and extensive item reworks to niche and underbuilt items. While many of the changes are pro skewed, solo lane stompers are being shoved in and out of meta and Rek’sai also gets much needed love after being one of the worst Champions in the game for a while now.

Patch Notes Changes

The Patch Notes in 25.14-15 is quite extensive and goes over items, Champions, Runes and reworks to really set a foundation for the game post MSI. While extensive, the key takeaway will be the AP pecking order, BoRK users, and top lane bruisers being changed the most.

Champion Buffs

The buffed Champions include:

  • Azir
  • Briar
  • Darius
  • Fiora
  • Fizz
  • Kled
  • Ziggs

It’s a sad month for Mid Mage players as Azir is buffed again, Ziggs is disgustingly broken, and Fizz is going to be terrorising our lane again. Azir’s cycle of being nerfed before internationals and buffed afterwards is well documented so while that was to be expected, why did they have to make Ziggs Giga OP? He gets played in both ADC and Mid, and is buffed in both roles with his AP ratios going through the roof. Because Ziggs doing more lategame damage is just what the playerbase needed.

For Top Laners, Darius buff is probably a bit terrifying as his Q will now heal him much more, but honestly, if it reduced the number of Garen’s running full crit and not dying in a middle of a 5v5 teamfight while full focused, it can only be a good thing. Outside of Garen players, top laners will now really need anti-heal against Darius and have my sympathy that another early stat checker gets even stronger.

Champion Nerfs

The nerfed Champions include:

  • Alistar
  • Bel’veth
  • Braum
  • Irelia
  • Lee Sin
  • Master Yi
  • Nilah
  • Pantheon
  • Quinn
  • Rell
  • Riven
  • Sett
  • Twisted Fate
  • Yasuo
  • Yuumi
  • Zoe

The only really interesting nerf is the one to Alistar and Braum, with their base armour decrease making him weaker against harass heavy bot lanes. While it probably is warranted due to their omnipresence in pro especially since fearless got introduced, both were regarded by the community as one of those evergreen champions that would not fall out of meta and is pickable pretty much no matter what enemies picked in solo queue. Now he will have a harder time being blind picked especially if enemies decide to go full harass early, they will likely feel the brunt of the decreased stats by conceding kills early.

Rell and Pantheon also are probably nerfed due to their consistency in pro, while solo queue stompers like Irelia and Master Yi receive nerfs after the BoRK buffs. The changes in terms of nerfs really seem to target BoRK users that are played in solo queue which is highly understandable as it is a frustrating item to play against.

Adjusted Champions

The adjusted Champions include:

  • Corki
  • Illaoi
  • Kled
  • Rek’sai

There are a lot of changes to Kled on 25.14, and to simplify it in English, Riot wants Bruiser Kled and not Assassin Kled. They also took away his Grievous Wounds effect on Q, and pros describe Kled as overall more consistent but weaker. This probably points to a higher floor and lower ceiling when piloted optimally, which is essentially the path Riot presumably wants to take with every champion looking at the way they are balancing the game.

Obviously, there are some QOL improvements with such a rework which is nice, but Kled isn’t a good bruiser. That’s the point, Kled was good at killing squishies and running them over, but they forced him bruiser and Kled cannot match up to traditional stat checkers by just moving numbers around. They will likely buff him but it is a disappointing change so far, although it does make him less volatile and more accessible. The buffs in 25.15 should also help.

Rek’sai has needed a rework for a while and is a net buff due to true damage and the way percentage max health will work on her damage, while Illaoi may be a net nerf but a buff in some instances of close combat. Corki gets some AD ratio buffs but nerfs to base damage, probably giving him better scaling but curving his early game oppression down.

Item and Rune Reworks

Reworked Items and Runes include:

  • Blade of the Ruined King
  • Haunting Guise
  • Kraken Slayer
  • Phantom Dancer
  • Rod of Ages
  • Guardian
  • Unsealed Spellbook(Smite)

BoRK, Kraken and RoA receive buffs that will largely make ADC’s happy, along with the Wind Brothers. While RoA is decent, it’s catalyst that is strong as a lane neutralising component, but Ryze and Kassadin will also enjoy the free Mana Scaling.

In terms of Unsealed Spellbook being nerfed, this is probably more pro-skewed to give jungle more agency of Jungle Camps and smite fights. The Haunting Guise stacking cheese trick is also out so thanks for that Chovy.

New ADC: The Unbroken Faith Yunara

Yunara is a new Ionian Marksman that fills the ADC role. Her kit is somewhat underwhelming at the highest levels of play with pros calling her the second weakest marksman outside of poor Kalista who is never going to be good due to her omnipresence if she is even half viable. Yunara is thankfully a step above that but trails behind her marksman counterparts with her Ult reliance and lack of sustained damage outside her windows of power. She is also heavily item reliant to actually do damage.

An idea to make Yunara stronger would be giving her a reset upon takedowns but that turns her into Jinx 2.0, or giving her a numbers buff to make her damage stick outside of when she is in her Ultimate. As an introduction to a character, I personally believe releasing Champions weaker rather than meta breakingly strong is better, so it is a good introduction into her kit, and she is a typical marksman that has shades of other champions but currently just does everything worse.
