New Pokémon

A few brand new Pokémon were revealed during the trailer, including two new version exclusives.

The first is a new Pokémon called Klawf. This is a new Rock-type Pokémon based on a crab and it is the Ambush Pokémon. Klawf are said to have eyes that can completely spin around, leaving no blind spot in their vision. One of the most interesting parts of this Pokémon is its new ability, Anger Shell, which Lowers Defence and Special Defence when hitting half health for a boost to Attack, Special Attack and Speed. Effectively, it is the move Shell Smash as an Ability.

The other two new Pokémon are Armarouge and Ceruledge. Armarogue is a Pokémon Scarlet exclusive whereas Ceruledge is a Pokémon Violet exclusive.

Armarogue and Ceruledge

Armarogue and Ceruledge

For Pokemon Scarlet, Armarogue is known as the Fire Warrior Pokemon and is a Fire/Psychic Type. This Pokémon lives off of the principles of a fair fight, challenging opponents head-on with its sturdy defence and high firepower. It can learn a unique move called Armour Cannon where Armarogue fires a large and powerful cannon blast, lowering its Defences in the process.

On the flip side, Ceruledge is the Fire Blades Pokémon and is a Fire/Ghost Type. Ceruledge is the opposite of Armarogue, willing to do anything and everything to win in a fight, even draining the life of its foes using its flaming swords. Its unique move is called Bitter Blade, a move which drains the health of the opponent, healing Ceruledge for half the damage inflicted.

Three Stories

One of the most interesting things shown off is that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will have three unique ventures that players can undertake. We know that the game is an open world, meaning that players can go anywhere they want whenever. Now, we have a bit of a better idea of what we will be doing.

The three different stories detailed are:

  • Victory Road and the Gym Journey
  • The Search for Herba Mystica
  • Team Star – The Enemy Team of Troublemakers

Three Stories

Victory Road

This is the most straightforward of the three stories. Just like in previous games, you will be asked to travel around the world, battling different gym leaders to collect badges. Once you have collected enough badges, you can challenge the Elite 4 at Victory Road and then the Champion. Standard stuff.

What Pokémon Scarlet and Violet bring to the table is called Gym Challenges. These are tasks that you must undertake before you can challenge the Gym (similar to the Island Trials from Pokémon Sun and Moon). The example we saw in the trailer involved the Gym trial for a new Grass-type Gym Leader called Brassius who asks you to find several Sunflora who are scattered around town.

One thing we do know is that you will be able to challenge any Gym in any order.

Another new character we were introduced to is Ms. Geeta. She is the Chairwomen of Paldea’s Pokémon League and is said to be the strongest trainer of them all. She is looking for exceptionally talented trainers who are capable of conquering the Pokémon League.

Path of Legends: The Search for Herba Mystica

Perhaps the most unique story shown in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer is the search for Herba Mystica. In this adventure, players will aid the character Arven in searching for some legendary recipe ingredients. These ingredients are said to ‘immediately restore health’ when consumed.

The difficult part is that these ingredients are guarded by strong Pokémon known as Titans. These could be compared to the Alpha Pokémon from Pokemon Legends: Arceus as they are beefed-up versions of already existing Pokémon. In the trailer, we got to see Arven and the player fighting against a Titan version of the new Pokémon Klawf. These Titan Pokémon seem to have different UI and health bars associated with them and appear to be much tougher than your average battle.

If you can help Arven and collect all of these ingredients, it is said that he may ‘treat you to some of his hand-made dishes’. Compared to the Gym challenge or even the exploits of Team Star, this seems like the most interesting path so far.

Starfall Street: Team Star

We have finally seen the ‘evil’ team that we will be facing in this game: Team Star. As opposed to hardened criminals like Team Rocket, Team Star are much more like Team Yell. They are just delinquents and troublemakers.

In the world of Paldea, Team Star are the most rebellious members of the Pokémon school that you attend. There are many different Team Star bases littered across Paldea, all led by their own boss. An interesting detail is that their outfits will change depending on which version of the game you are playing on.

Team Star

We got to see one of these Team Star bases in the trailer, Starfall Street. To get to the boss of each crew, you must first face down several waves of grunts. These seem to include what appeared to be double battles against several Pokémon.

Once you get through the grunts, you get the opportunity to challenge the boss of the base. One of these Team Star bosses that we got to see is Mela, the boss of Team Star’s Fire Crew (AKA the Schedar Crew). Mela and the other bosses all ride on vehicles called Starmobiles, which they will even battle you from and it is even implied that you may have to fight the Starmobile itself.

New Pokémon Branded OLED Switch

Finally, Pokémon announced the release of a new OLED model Nintendo Switch in conjunction with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The new model features unique decals on the Switch itself, the Joycons and even the OLED Dock, all of which are based on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
