How to Catch the Legendary Pokémon Ting-Lu in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have added a bunch of new Pokémon for players to catch, battle and trade. This includes a new batch of Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, powerful Pokémon who require a bit more graft than usual to obtain.

In Scarlet and Violet, four Legendaries aside from Miraidon and Koraidon can be caught out in the open world known as the Treasures of Ruin. If you want to catch the other Treasures of Ruin, you can find our guide for Wo-Chien, Chi-Yu and Chien-Pao here.

One of these Pokémon is called Ting-Lu, a strange-looking Pokémon that players can encounter to the North of Paldea. However, you cannot simply find or encounter Ting-Lu, as you must complete a set of tasks first.

Here’s how to catch the Legendary Pokémon Ting-Lu in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Where to Find Ting-Lu

You can find Ting-Lu in the Northern part of Paldea. Specifically, the area North of Casseroya Lake is known as Socarrat Trail. This place is full of autumn-coloured trees and plant life, with sheer cliffs and yellow grass all over.

When you reach Socarrat Trail, you will eventually find a small decline that leads to a huge green seal. This is where you will eventually fight Ting-Lu.

However, at this point, the seal is locked. To unlock it, you’ll need to go around the Northern part of Paldea looking for some specific items. When you’ve found them all, the seal will unlock and you can finally confront Ting-Lu.

How to Unlock the Seal

To unlock the seal, you need to find 8 Black Stakes. There are 8 Stakes for each of the four Legendary Pokémon.

Ting-Lu’s Stakes are all black with the same green glow as the seal. You will need to find and break all 8 of the Steaks before the seal will unlock.

Stake 1

The first Stake can be found in a large cavern near the Northern exit to the Asado Desert. The easiest way to get to the Stake is to fast travel to Casseroya Watchtower 1. After spawning in, turn around and you’ll see the cavern being held up by a bunch of thick stone pillars.

Hop on over to the cavern using your glide and you can begin scaling the pillars and stones within the area. Atop one of these structures is the first Stake – simply approach it and interact with it to cause it to crumble away.

Stake 2

The next Stake is very easy to find. From the cavern where you found the first Stake, simply head back towards the Casseroya Watchtower 1 and jump down next to the river.

Sitting still on the grass next to the stream will be the next Stake.

Stake 3

For the next two Stakes, you’ll be venturing into the Casseroya Lake itself. The first Stake is on a small cluster of islands to the South of the Lake.

Travel to the Casseroya Watchtower 1 once more and head towards the Lake. You’ll be on a direct course to reach the islands in question. Once you do make land, jump over to the smaller of the two islands.

The Stake will be dug into the ground on one of the ledges. Using Koraidon or Miraidon’s climbing skills will make this part infinitely easier.

Stake 4

Stake number four is still in Casseroya Lake. This time, you’ll be heading to the largest and most central island in the middle of the Lake.

This island happens to have its fast travel point (Casseroya Lake Inlet) so fly on over to begin the search. Once you’re there, head to the bottom-right area of the island.

On an elevated platform of rock, the fourth Stake will be waiting.

Stake 5

The fifth Stake asks you to travel to the Western edge of Casseroya Lake. This also happens to be the easiest and most direct path to Socarrat Trail.

After you get to the Western side of the Lake, hang around the first chunk of land. The fifth Stake will be perched atop the rocky outcrop just before you jump to the middle island.

Stake 6

Continue North from the previous Stake to find the sixth Stake. After island-hopping your way across to the other side, you’ll find a large patch of grass beside a ruin.

Next to that ruin is a large set of hills and cliffs. The Stake can be found atop this very cliffside.

Stake 7

Stake number seven asks you to travel closer to the icy reaches of the Glaseado Mountains. The easiest way to get to the Stake is just to travel through Socarrat Trail until you reach the side bordering the mountainside.

Once you get there, climb up the snowy cliffside. Start poking around the peak while remaining wary of the sheer edges and you will eventually come across the Stake.

Stake 8

The final Stake can be found back near the Southern parts of Casseroya Lake. Follow the river that runs throughout West Province (Area Three) and you will eventually see where it joins with the water of Glaseado Mountain.

Near the border of the Mountains and the  Western Province, there is a small valley where the waters pool together. In this area, atop one of the mountainsides, will be the final Stake you need.

Ting-Lu, the Ruinous Pokémon

Once you have broken all 8 Stakes, you will be told that something has awoken. Return to the seal and you will find that, with the chains gone, you can interact with it.

Doing so will awaken one of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Treasures of Ruin: the Ruinous Pokémon Ting-Lu

Battle Against Ting-Lu

Battle Against Ting-Lu

Ting-Lu is level 60 when you fight it and it is a Dark/Ground type. This means that it is:

  • Immune to: Electric, Psychic
  • Resistant to: Poison, Rock, Ghost, Dark
  • Vulnerable to: Water, Fighting, Bug, Grass, Ice, Fairy

Ting-Lu’s signature move is Ruination, a move shared by the other Treasures of Ruin. It is similar to Super Fang in that it will cut your Pokémon’s HP by 50%. While not too deadly in and of itself, it does open you up for a strong secondary attack from Ting-Lu’s other moves such as Rock Slide. This Legendary Pokémon also boasts some very high Physical stats (110 Attack and 125 Defence) so battling it with Special Pokémon may be best.

Exploit Ting-Lu’s many weaknesses, watch out for Ruination and its high base stats and you should come away as the owner of a new Treasure of Ruin.
