The next generation of Pokémon has arrived in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. With over 80 new Pokémon to collect, trade and battle, there’s plenty to see and do in the region of Paldea. This includes catching a new quartet of Legendary Pokémon called The Treasures of Ruin.
The Treasures of Ruin are a new group of Pokémon who are all said to be born from the malice and hatred of people in the past. They’re hiding all over Paldea and it is your job to unseal and catch them. If you want to find the other Treasures of Ruin, you can find our guides on Ting-Lu, Wo-Chien and Chien-Pao here on KeenGamer.
Chi-Yu is one of the Treasures of Ruin. Based on a goldfish, this Pokémon is hiding to the North-East of Paldea, waiting for someone to unseal and challenge it. However, you cannot immediately fight Chi-Yu: several things must be done first.
Here’s how to catch the Legendary Pokémon Chi-Yu in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Where to Find Chi-Yu
To find Chi-Yu, you first have to head to the North-East edge of Paldea. You’ll specifically have to head to a stretch of barren mud in North Province (Area Two).
This area is filled with high-level Pokémon such as Luxray, Amoongus and more. What you’re here for, though, is the landmark known as Fury Falls. This is a three-tiered waterfall that can be found in North Province (Area Two) and it even has its fast travel point.
Once you reach Fury Falls, get on your Koraidon or Miraidon and begin to climb to the very top. As previously stated, there are about three tiers to this waterfall and when you reach the top it will mellow out into a pond. At the back of said pond is a small cavern which, when entered, opens up to reveal a larger cave with a big blue seal on the wall.
When you first discover it, the seal is covered in chains and you cannot interact with it. This is where Chi-Yu slumbers, waiting for someone to release it. To do that, you’ll first need to find 8 mysterious items scattered around the Eastern side of Paldea.
How to Unlock the Seal
To unlock the seal, you need to find 8 Black Stakes. Each of the Treasures of Ruin requires you to break 8 Black Stakes, with each laying claim to a different type and colour of Stake.
For Chi-Yu in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, you need to break 8 Black Stakes with a ghostly blue glow to them (one which matches the glow on the seal). Interact with them all and your battle with Chi-Yu will come to fruition.
The first Stake is very easily found. Exit the cave where the seal is being held and climb further up the side of the mountain.
At the top, the ground will level out into a walkable area. The first Stake is resting still on this incline. Interact with the Stake to make it ‘crumble’ and add the first Stake to your list.
For the second Stake, head East from the Fury Falls and towards the North Province (Area Two) Pokémon Centre. Next to the Pokémon Centre is another large mountain, with a similarly large tree growing at the top (which can be seen from the mini-map).
Head over there and climb to the very top of the mountain peak to find the tree on the map. The second Stake will be resting in the shade of the tree, outlooking Fury Falls.
The third Stake asks you to loop back towards Levincia, where you fought Iono in the Gym Battle. Right outside the Northern city entrance to Levincia is a Lighthouse situated next to a strange grassy set of hills.
Ride your Legendary Pokémon over to the Lighthouse and then hop on over to the hills. Once again, at the apex, you will find a large tree sheltering the next Stake you need to find.
The next Stake can be found a bit in the Southern portion of North Province (Area Two). Admistdt the narrow passages and valleys, there is an inconspicuous ruin resting near the edge of the map.
Make your way here either by following the path from Fury Falls or by climbing over the mountains from the South. Once you get here, poke around the ruins for a moment and the Stake will be waiting at the centre of the stonework.
The fifth Stake is found on the border between Glaseado Mountain and the Tagtree Thicket. Along the perimeter of the mountain is a long stretch of rocky slopes and cliffs, all of which can be traversed by Koraidon or Miraidon and are populated by numerous species of Pokémon.
The next Stake can be found near the Southern part of Glaseado Mountain, on an outcrop of the land untouched by snow. There is a path leading here from further in the Mountain, but you can just as easily get here via gliding and climbing.
The sixth Stake can be found inside the Tagtree Thicket itself. In the Northern area of the Thicket, past the river and the Team Star base, you will find a few elevated cliffs that can only be scaled with Koraidon or Miraidon.
The sixth Stake is atop one of these cliffs overlooking the Thicket, once again situated in the shade of a tree. Climb on up and pick up your sixth Stake for Chi-Yu.
The seventh Stake is located in North Province (Area Once). Directly North of the North Province (Area One) Pokémon Centre is a very tall mountain.
You’ll simply need to climb up this mountain and reach the very tip. Once there, the seventh Stake will be waiting for you to pick it up.
You will find the final Stake in one of Paldea’s most isolated areas. To the North of the map, past Glaseado Mountain, is a small beach where the river from the mountains meets the ocean.
Simply the stream that trickles from the top of Glaseado Mountain down to the beach. The final Stake will be resting here, right next to the sand and sea, waiting for you to destroy it and unleash Chi-Yu.
Chi-Yu, the Ruinous Pokémon
After you destroy all 8 Black Stakes, an ominous cry will ring out over Paldea. Return to the seal in the mountains and you will find it free of chains.
Save your game, approach the seal and the battle will begin. You will fight against one of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Treasures of Ruin: Chi-Yu, the Ruinous Pokémon.
Despite its fishy appearance, Chi-Yu is a Fire/Dark Type Pokémon. You will face it at level 60 and it is:
- Immune to: Psychic
- Resistant to: Ghost, Steel, Fire, Grass, Ice, Dark
- Vulnerable to: Fighting, Ground, Rock, Water
Like the other Treasures of Ruin, Chi-Yu’s signature move is Ruination. This Dark Type move shares its effect with the Normal Type Super Fang, cutting the HP of any Pokémon hit by 50%. While not too deadly, Ruination can open you and your team up for some of Chi-Yu’s harder-hitting attacks, so be careful. Unlike some of the other Treasures, Chi-Yu has access to a move that will Confuse (Swagger) and a move that will remove it from the battlefield (Bounce) so be aware.
With 135 Base Special Attack and 120 Base Special Defence, Chi-Yu boasts some very high Special stats. Facing it down with some Physical attackers who can make use of its Fighting or Ground-type weaknesses is sure to work in your favour. Compared to some of the other Treasures, Chi-Yu can be a bit trickier due to its slippery moveset and ability to debuff your team. Stay focused, heal whenever it uses Bounce and eventually, Chi-Yu will be yours.
That is how to catch the Legendary Chi-Yu in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
