What Determines Your Pokémon’s Tera Type?
When you catch a generic Pokémon it comes with a Tera Type that is one of its standard types. So for Dragonite the default Tera Types would be dragon and flying, and a wild Dragonite would have a 50/50 chance to have each Tera Type.
You can also catch some special Pokémon in the wild which have a different Tera Type from one of their standard types, and we have already put out a guide on how to find those. Pokémon caught in Tera Raid Battles also often have a different Tera Type than their standard types, but because there are so many different Pokémon it is difficult to get a specific Tera Type on a specific Pokémon by finding it in a Tera Raid Battle.
So say you aren’t satisfied with the Tera Type that your Pokémon has. Can you change it? The answer is yes, and this guide will explain how.
Changing A Pokémon’s Tera Type
You can change any Pokémon’s Tera Type to anything you want, as long as you have the correct items and have beaten the Medali gym. Want a fire type Quaxley? You can do that. A grass type Gyarados? You can do that too! All you need to do is take 50 of the correct type of Tera Shard to the Treasure Eatery restaurant in Medali. You might remember that this is where you fought the normal type gym leader, Larry.
Inside the restaurant you will find a chef who will offer to change your pokémon’s Tera Type in exchange for 50 Tera Shards of the type that you want to change to. The first time you talk to them they will also give you a free 50 normal type Tera Shards. So if you want normal to be your new Tera Type then you are in luck, otherwise you need to get farming!

By talking to the chef you can change your pokémon to any tera type you want, as long as you have the shards!
Getting Tera Shards
So now you know how to change your Tera Type, but where do you get the Tera Shards you need?
Picking Them up From the Ground
As you have been playing the game you have probably picked up some Tera Shards from hidden items on the ground, and that is one way to get them. Unfortunately this usually only gives 1-3 shards, and getting shards at all from a hidden item is very rare. Even by the time you have finished the game it is unlikely that you will have obtained more than 10 of a single type of shard. This is a nice way to get some passive shards from exploring, but it isn’t a reliable way to farm up enough shards to change Tera Type.
Tera Raid Battles
The best way to farm Tera Shards is through Tera Raid Battles. Every Tera Raid Battle will reward Tera Shards of the same type as the raid, so a rock type Tera Raid will give rock type tera shards for example. You can tell what type a Tera Raid Battle is by looking at the symbol for it on the world map, or by looking at the symbol in the top right corner of the challenge screen.
The amount of shards that you get from a Tera Raid Battle varies depending on luck and the level of the raid. 6-star Tera Raid Battles can give up to 10 shards if you are lucky, but the average is more like 6. If you are doing a 1-star Tera Raid Battle, you are unlikely to get more than 1 shard. In general the higher level the Tera Raid Battle, the more Tera Shards you will get at the end.
