A YouTube Short was also posted a day before the reveal that teased Greavard. In it, Greavard’s signature purple candle glow can be seen briefly in the background.
According to the official Pokémon website, Greavard will be a purely Ghost-type Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet. This new Pokémon’s ability is Pickup, which gives it a chance to obtain a random item as its trainer travels. It’s stated that it has “powerful jaws that can shatter bones,” hinting that it may be a physical attacker. This is further evidenced by the fact that the gameplay trailer shows Greavard using a move that looks similar to Bite.
In the spirit of Halloween, Greavard also has some paranormal lore attached to it. It’s playful and affectionate, and trainers can very easily form a bond with it quickly to the point that Greavard will follow the person wherever they go. Unfortunately, Greavard will unintentionally drain the life force of those around it, even the person with whom it’s fostered a bond. While other Pokémon have had Pokédex entries that pose a risk for the trainers that catch them, these generally haven’t affected gameplay. It’s safe to assume that Greavard won’t accidentally eat the player-character’s soul, but Pokémon is no stranger to surprises.
Trainers can catch Greavard in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet when it releases on November 18th.
