On Wednesday, Blizzard Entertainment announced that their PC games will be available on Steam starting August 10th. The first game they will be releasing on Steam will be Overwatch 2. This comes after the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft.
Previously Blizzard’s PC games were only available through Battle.net. They have also said that more of their games will be coming to Steam. However, Overwatch 2 is the only one revealed so far. Although Blizzard games will come to Steam, players will still need a Battle.net account.
Blizzard made the announcement saying, “Though we remain committed to continually investing in and supporting Battle.net, we want to break down the barriers to make it easier for players everywhere to find and enjoy our games”.
Along with still supporting Battle.net, players will now have the perks of Steam like their friends list and achievements. Overwatch 2’s player base has seen a recent decline. The August 10th release date is close to the Invasion event which will have new PvE story missions which Blizzard hopes to bring in more players.
Blizzard is making changes to keep up with the ever changing gaming industry. “as we’ve evolved, the industry has evolved too — gaming is no longer just for specific communities as it was when Battle.net launched over two decades ago, gaming is for everyone–and though we remain committed to continually investing in and supporting Battle.net, we want to break down the barriers to make it easier for players everywhere to find and enjoy our games.”
