To kick off Season 6 of Overwatch 2 and commemorate the release of the new Invasion story missions, we have a brand new free PvE event to dig into in the form of Underworld. Intended as a quick taster to get players in the mood for the more in-depth and cinematic Invasion missions, Underworld is a beefy event comprised of multiple mission variants where you and a team of co-op buddies must face down the legions of Ramattra’s Null Sector in an altered version of London’s King’s Row. On top of an enjoyable set of co-op missions, there are a ton of event challenges to complete and rewards to earn, including a new Legendary Skin for Brigitte.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new Underworld event in Overwatch 2 Season 6.

Underworld Missions Explained
The main crux of the Underworld event is the new free PvE experience, Underworld. You can find this under the new Missions tab in the main menu: this is also where you’ll find the recently released Invasion missions.
In short, you can think of Underworld and its various missions as a trial of the new PvE Story mode, Invasion. In it, you and a team of 3 other players must face down waves of different Null Sector robots as you aim to complete various tasks and objectives around a map. For Underworld, you’ll be battling Ramattra’s forces on an updated version of King’s Row, complete with a new coat of Null-Sector-inspired paint and some new areas to fight in.
Altogether, there are 4 different mission types in the Underworld event. As of launch day, only the base version of Underworld is available, with the other three modes going live over the course of the event. Each promises a slightly different take on the Underworld formula, with new mechanics, different Hero rosters and more:
- Underworld: Death from Above launches on the 14th of August.
- Underworld: Ultimate Zones launches on the 21st of August.
- Underworld: Invasion Mystery Swap launches on the 28th of August.
For the base version of Underworld, your main objective is to repair and defend a robot by the name of TS-1 in order to liberate a bunker of trapped civilians from deep within King’s Row. Following that, you’ll then storm through the Null Sector frontlines with the aid of TS-1 to take down the last remaining stragglers, before concluding with a showdown against some familiar-looking robot friends.
In terms of scale, these missions are pretty enjoyable. There are plenty of different Null Sector enemy types ripped straight from Invasion, requiring different tactics or teamwork to take down effectively. On top of that, there’s hidden lore stashed around the map and special challenges to complete. Most of all, it’s a real breath of fresh air from typical Overwatch and may just be enough to get some players to fork over some cash to try the real story missions.
As for how long this event is going to be around, Underworld is active from August 10th to September 5th, giving you just under a month to get everything you need before it disappears.
Underworld Difficulty Modes
Another interesting thing that veteran players looking for a challenge may be interested in is Underworld’s different difficulty modes. When queueing up for Underworld, you have the choice of four difficulty modes to choose from: there’s Normal, Hard, Expert and Legendary.
Increasing the difficulty of Underworld will, of course, make the missions more challenging. Enemies will have higher health pools, they’ll hit harder and spawn in greater numbers. Another thing to know if that on the hardest difficulty, Legendary, there is a special weekly modifier that will change up the game and make things significantly more difficult. There are at least 3 of these different modifiers to test your mettle against, so come back each week for a taste of something new.
Completing each of Underworld’s four missions on higher difficulties is also required if you wish to obtain some of the harder event challenges. To be more specific, you’ll need to complete each mission on Expert to earn the Ultimate version of the Fighter challenges. Additionally, if you want to score the Modifier Master challenge (which awards the Underworld Guardian title) you’ll need to complete one run of Underworld on Legendary each week the event is live. If you’re feeling up to the task and want to challenge yourself, gather a team and face down the might of Null Sector’s finest.
Event Challenges
As always with Overwatch 2 events, there’s a new suite of event challenges for players to attempt if they want to score for exclusive Underworld-themed goods and cosmetics. Compared to previous events, Underworld is one of the most expansive ones yet, tasking you with completing 16 different challenges for various rewards. These challenges can be completed in any order but it’s worth mentioning that every single challenge involves partaking in the Underworld game mode: there are no freebies for playing normal matches in this event.
- Savior of the Underworld: Complete 8 Underworld challenges.
- Underworld Fighter: Complete Underworld on any difficulty.
- Underworld: Missle Fighter: Complete Underworld: Death from Above on any difficulty.
- Underworld: Ultimate Fighter: Complete Underworld: Ultimate Zones on any difficulty
- Underworld: Mystery Fighter: Complete Underworld: Invasion Mystery Swap on any difficulty.
- Underworld: Role Master: Complete Underworld as each role.
- Stop, Thief: Eliminate 4 battery thieves as a team before they steal a battery in a single, completed run of Underworld.
- You’re Welcome, Human: Activate TS-1’s gratitude protocol in Underworld.
- Nulltimate: Prevent A-7000 and OR Units from using their ultimate and complete Underworld.
- Rock on TS-1: Keep TS-1 alive and complete Underworld.
- Underworld: Lore Hunter: Discover all hidden lore interactions as a team in Underworld.
Furthermore, on top of these challenges, there are a few additional ones for completing Underworld’s various difficulty options. Fortunately, if you’re just going for the main Underworld event prize, you don’t have to engage with these harder modes if you don’t want to:
- Underworld: Expert Fighter: Complete Underworld on Expert difficulty.
- Underworld: Expert Missle Fighter: Complete Underworld: Death from Above on Expert Difficulty.
- Underworld: Expert Ultimate Fighter: Complete Underworld: Ultimate Zones on Expert difficulty.
- Underworld: Expert Mystery Fighter: Complete Underworld: Invasion Mystery Swap on Expert difficulty.
- Underworld: Modifier Master: Complete Underworld on Legendary difficulty with each of the 3 weekly modifiers.
In total, there are 10 unique rewards that you can pick up from completing all of Underworld’s various event challenges. These include the Underworld Guardian Player Title, Sparkplug Player Icon, four exclusive voice lines and three special sprays. Additionally, you can also get 30,000 Battle Pass EXP, which equals 3 full levels of the current Season 6 Battle Pass.
Free Legendary Sparkplug Brigitte Skin
Undoubtedly, the most exciting reward from the Overwatch 2 Underworld event and the one which will empower players to continue fighting against the hoards of Null Sector is the brand-new Legendary Skin for Brigitte. Titled Sparkplug, this new Legendary Skin allows you to rock a more casual look for Brigitte compared to her usual fully kitted set-up. This outfit is actually the same one Brigitte will wear during the new Invasion missions and storyline, allowing you to take a small piece of PvE wherever you go in Overwatch 2.
To get your hands on the Legendary Sparkplug Skin, players must complete the Savior of the Underworld event challenge before the Underworld event ends on September 5th. Beating this challenge simply involves completing 8 other Underworld challenges, meaning that you’ll need to complete at least half of the available challenges. Fortunately, this does mean that you can skip some of the more challenging ones – such as the difficulty option challenges – if you just want the skin and nothing else.
Once you’ve completed 8 of the Underworld event challenges, Savior of the Underworld will instantly pop alongside it. Then, all you need to do is head into your Hero Gallery and suit up Brigitte in her new Sparkplug Skin.
And that was everything you needed to know about the new Overwatch 2 Underworld event, live right now to celebrate the start of Season 6 and the launch of Invasion. Just another reminder that Underworld runs from August 10th to September 5th, giving you roughly 25 days to enjoy this free slice of PvE and obtain all available event rewards.
