God of War Ragnarok has, somehow, gotten even better with the introduction of Valhalla, a brand new, completely DLC. Outside of introducing some fresh and exciting additions to combat with a new rogue-like gameplay format, Valhalla is an excellent closing chapter to the Ragnarok (and Norse) saga of the God of War series with a surprising amount of new story beats, impressive voice work and some touching conclusions which we can only hope shape future entries.
On top of all that, though, diligent players who can overcome Valhalla’s many trials and tribulations will find a bountiful reward waiting for them at the end, especially if they’re fans of the Greek God of War games because Sony Santa Monica has made Classic Kratos an unlockable appearance option in Valhalla. With it unlocked, you can stomp around the frigid wastes of Midgard or the burning pits of Musphelheim, all the while rocking the appearance of a much nastier God killer, and we’re here to show you how.
Here’s how to unlock the Classic Kratos skin and Ghost of Sparta Armour in God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla.

How to Unlock Classic Kratos and the Ghost of Sparta Armor
If you want to unlock the Classic Kratos skin and Ghost of Sparta armour set in God of War Ragnarok, you’ll need to complete the main story sections of its newest DLC, Valhalla. This new mode is completely separate from the base game and is accessible from the main menu.
While most of Valhalla’s focus is on the new rogue-like gameplay format where you battle through Valhalla, the realm of the glorious dead which has been transformed by Kratos’ memory, it does have a pretty significant chunk of new story. While not super long (probably taking most moderately skilled players a few hours at most) it does give you some guidance and structure when playing the DLC and, if you want those cosmetics we just spoke about, you’ll have to beat the whole thing.
To complete the God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla main story, you must complete the following quests:
- The Invitation
- Homecoming
- The Host
- The Work, Part 1: Acceptance
- The Work, Part 2: Vigilance
- The Work, Part 3: Benevolence
At a minimum, you’ll need to complete at least six successful runs of Valhalla to reach the end. 4 of those runs – the ones you’ll undertake after beating The Host – must involve beating Tyr in combat. Once you beat Tyr for the last time at the end of The Work: Part 3, Kratos will be able to step through the great doors which barred him a few runs earlier. After a touching cutscene and a great send-off for the Ragnarok narrative, the credits will roll and you’ll get ejected back to the Shore.
Then, simply talk to Freya on the edge of the beach. This will, first and foremost, unlock the ability to return to Valhalla should you want to collect any more upgrades, trophies or other interests but, for our purposes, the most important thing it does is unlock a new armour set – the Ghost of Sparta set – as well as the Classic Kratos skin.
How to Equip the Classic Kratos and Ghost of Sparta Armor
There are two places in God of War Ragnarok where you can use the Classic Kratos skin and Ghost of Sparta armour once you’ve unlocked them: the Valhalla DLC itself and in New Game Plus. In both of these modes, you can freely use both of these features, allowing you to mix and match a bunch of different cosmetic options.
Unfortunately, both of these features are absent from ordinary save files, even if you do complete the main story parts of Valhalla. If you’re going back to try out either the Classic skin or the new armour within the base game, it must be a New Game + save file or else they won’t show up.
Classic Kratos in Valhalla
If you want to don the appearance of Classic Kratos while you fend off the forces of Valhalla, you’ll need to head to the Appearance totem on the Shore. You’ll find the totem next to the Valkyrie Eir and this is where you can customize how Kratos looks, including his weapons and shield, without affecting any of his stats.
Once you’ve beaten Valhalla’s main story and talked to Freya, you can return here and press R3 while in the Appearance Menu to switch back and forth between Default Kratos and Classic Kratos. Compared to Default Kratos, Classic Kratos has much paler skin (as this was from a time when the ash was a lot fresher) and lacks any kind of leg wear, deciding to use bandages in place of the trousers his older counterpart wears.
As for the Ghost of Sparta armour set, which replicates the iconic red and gold clothes from the original Greek series of games, you can also equip them as an appearance option for Kratos at the Appearance totem. Armour sets aren’t a thing in the Valhalla mode, being purely cosmetic options, so if you ever want to change what armour Kratos is wearing, you’ll need to come here.
Classic Kratos and Ghost of Sparta Armor in New Game +
If, instead, you want to revisit God of War Ragnarok’s main campaign with a fresher, angrier set of eyes, you can also use the Classic Kratos outfit and Ghost of Sparta armour in New Game Plus. However, the big difference is that you’ll unlock them at different points, one of which can be very easy to miss if you’re not aware of it.
Classic Kratos is available right from the get-go on a New Game + save file, allowing you to revert to a much younger, angrier Kratos from the moment you get control of our favourite God of War. Simply head over to the Armor section of the inventory and Press R3 to change to Classic Kratos. The Classic skin will even appear in cutscenes, leading to some pretty humourous moments such as the fight against Thor.
- Switching to Classic Kratos
- An Alternative Future
Meanwhile, for the Ghost of Sparta armour, you’ll need to visit one of the Huldra Brothers camps. Once you’ve made it to one, open the Lost Chest where valuables and items you forgot on your journey will appear: the first time you do this after completing Valhalla will award you the full Ghost of Sparta armour set as well as Spartan Rage: Legacy, the unique form of Rage which lets Kratos wield the Blade of Olympus. From there, you can just head over to your inventory and equip the armour as either a full set or as pure transmog.
As for what kind of bonuses you’ll get while wearing the armour, the pieces themselves lack a clear set bonus like many of Ragnarok’s most popular sets do but they do provide some of the highest individual stat buffs in the entire game, especially to Strength. If you’re willing to drop some of the more unique, build-defining set bonuses in favour of raw offence power, the Ghost of Sparta set is likely to treat you very well.
- Glory of Sparta (Chest Armor): 144 Strength, 61 Defence and 76 Vitality
- Pride of Sparta (Wrist Armor): 128 Strength and 48 Vitality
- Mark of Sparta (Waist Armor): 52 Strength, 76 Defence and 48 Vitality
That was how to unlock the Classic Kratos skin and Ghost of Sparta armour set for both the God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC and New Game +.
