While I have previously asserted my love for the Western film genre and the early influence of John Wayne on my life, here I turn my attention towards another huge Western star. Since readers seemed to enjoy being able to easily make their Red Dead Online characters outfits worn by the Duke in some of his greatest films, I figured that this time, I would focus on another star of the genre—Clint Eastwood. Here, you will find another guide in outfit creation, but this time, we look at how to recreate 5 iconic Clint Eastwood outfits in Red Dead Online.
Eastwood has acted in over 60 films, including about one-third of which were Westerns; has directed at least 40 movies, and helped usher in the reign of a new genre in the Spaghetti Western. I was an avid fan of Red Dead because of my love for the genre growing up, so once I completed the game, I started searching for ways I could recreate iconic characters from past cinema. While there are definitely areas I think the online mode can be improved, the additional clothing options in Red Dead Online made this the better game mode to pursue the effort.
Just as in my previous article, I stuck to the outfits which stood out to me most when I thought of each particular Clint Eastwood film. I also wanted to simply list each clothing item, its color, and the price as I did before so it is easier for you to look through. It must also be noted that I did not always include specific off-hand holsters, gun belts, gun belt trinkets, belt buckles, or bandoliers because in many movies they’re standard black or brown, or they are difficult to really see.
Now, I will explain what clothing items and colors are needed to recreate these iconic character outfits as well as the price of every item so that you may plan accordingly.
1. Blondie in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)
In the final and most acclaimed film of Sergio Leonne’s The Man with No Name Trilogy, Eastwood finds himself as Blondie, a bounty hunter who races against two other gunslingers to find a large fortune of gold buried in a desolate cemetery. Considered by some to be the greatest Western of all time, this film sees Blondie making and breaking alliances with the other men as well as the Union and Confederate armies, and it of course ends with an epic standoff between the three men in the show’s finale.
This trilogy is what made Eastwood a household name and it also ushered in the Spaghetti Western style. Eastwood plays characters with similar attributes and attire in all three films, though he has a different nickname in each film. For me, the most iconic outfit in the trilogy includes the stalker hat, buckskin vest, and brown poncho. The outfit is totally fitting with the southwest and to me, it is certainly an iconic image of Western cinema.
What You Need
- Hat: Stalker Hat, Dark Brown (1st Option)—$14.50.
- Neck/Torso: Cardenas Poncho, Brown—$175; Sheepskin Vest, Light Brown (5th out of 10)—7 Gold Bars; French Dress Shirt, Light Blue (no pattern; unrolled)—$35.
- Legs: Studded Pants, Dark Blue—$6.50
- Boots: Stovepipe Square Toe Boots, Tan (under or over pants)—$41.25; Western Rider Spurs, Tan—$15.
- Accessories: Light Brown Belts
- Total Outfit Cost: $287.25 and seven Gold Bars.
- Optional Additions: Fuentes Poncho, Dark Brown—$245; Narrow Neckerchief, Black—$18.50
- Total Outfit Cost with Optional Items: $375.75 and 7 Gold Bars.
Other Notes
While it is great that Rockstar added ponchos to Red Dead Online since they were missing from the Campaign mode, unfortunately, there is not really any poncho that lays across the front to look like the one worn by Eastwood in the film. I went with the Cardenas Poncho ultimately, because it has some contrast with white in it so I felt that this closer mimicked the dark brown poncho with white rectangles that Blondie wears. Another option for this, however, would be the Dark Brown Fuentes Poncho, which will cost you about $245.
During the first half of the film, Blondie wears his jeans tucked into his boots showing more of the tan color of the rawhide of his boot shafts. In the second half, he wears his pants over the boots, so players can wear their pants either tucked in or out for this outfit. It will work either way.
As for the bandana, I know that a Black Narrow Neckerchief is more accurate to what Eastwood wears in the film based on parts of the movie where his collar is open and you can see it. When he wears the poncho, the neckerchief is still visible above the collar. Because of this, and since the poncho is worn as part of this outfit, I decided to go with the Black Gathered Bandana only to discover that no neckwear can be worn with the poncho. If you want to get the first option for when you are poncho-less go ahead, but the poncho is kind of the whole point, isn’t it?
2. The Stranger in High Plains Drifter (1973)
In his Western directorial debut, Eastwood also plays The Stranger, a nameless protagonist who comes to a small California mining town. While the townsfolk disapprove of the Stranger at first, his gunslinging skills prove valuable and they hire him to protect them from three treacherous outlaws. Possessing ulterior motives and having a connection to the town’s past unknown to the citizenry, he accepts the job.
In this film, he generally wears a black hat, with a dark gray patterned shirt, and brown pants. He also sometimes sports a light brown coat over his lighter attire.
What You Need
- Hat: Stalker Hat, Black—$14.50.
- Neck/Torso: Gathered Bandana, Black—2 Gold Bars; Brakeman Jacket, Dark Brown—$82.25; Everyday Shirt, Gray and White (full sleeves)—1 Gold Bar.
- Legs: Studded Pants, Brown—$6.50.
- Boots: Worn Ropers Boots, Dark Brown/Dark Brown (under pants)—$13.75; Western Rider Spurs, Brown—$19.50.
- Accessories: Brown Belts.
- Total Outfit Cost: $136.50 and 3 Gold Bars
- Optional Additions: Wool Shirt, Gray—$39; French Dress Shirt, Gray or Dark Gray Patterned—$35; Fernwater Coat, Dark Brown—9 Gold Bars; Tail Coat, Dark Brown—4 Gold Bars; Classic Frock Coat, Dark Brown—$18.50; Durham Coat, Dark Brown—$162.75
- Total Outfit Cost with Optional Items: $256 and 12 Gold Bars.
Other Notes
I had a tough time deciding what shirt to go with, but I thought the up and down lines visible on the dark gray shirt offset the fact that it had a white collar, enough to get the nod. As I mentioned in a previous article, there isn’t a whole lot of gray attire in this game, so finding the right pieces that work are a bit difficult. Other options that could work for this would be a Gray Wool Shirt for $39, or a Gray (or Dark Gray Patterned) French Dress Shirt for $35. If you prefer the look of one of these shirts, have at it. It doesn’t matter too much since it will be mostly covered by a coat.
Likewise, I had a difficult time picking the exact coat I wanted as well because no one coat has all the attributes the one in the film exhibits. I believe that the Brakeman Jacket is truly the best option here, but alternative jackets might include the Fernwater Coat, Tail Coat, Classic Frock Coat or Durham Coat, all in Dark Brown. They all have certain qualities similar to the one in the movie, but again, none of them possess a majority of those qualities.
I again went with the Gathered Bandana in Black because in most of the shots I see, it appears his neckerchief clings closely to his neck, so I wanted it to have that look as well. Again, if you’d rather just go with the regular Neckerchief you are free to do so.
3. Josey Wales in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
The norms of Civil War-era films are flipped in this movie where Eastwood’s character of Josey Wales joins a Confederate guerilla group to take revenge on the ruthless Union soldiers who killed his son and wife. The Missouri farmer-turned-avenger kills many men on his lust for vengeance. For me, the most iconic image from this one is the one on the cover of the film with him in his light gray shirt, long brown duster coat, red handkerchief, and large beige cowboy hat.
What You Need
- Hat: Military Scout Hat, White—$11
- Neck/Torso: Neckerchief, Red—$18.50; Leather Jacket, Dark Brown (6 of 10)—$28.50; Everyday Overshirt, Light Blue—$11.25
- Legs: Studded Pants, Brown—$6.50.
- Boots: Worn Ropers Boots, Tans (over pants)—$13.75; Western Rider Spurs, Tan—$15.
- Accessories: Brown Belts.
- Total Outfit Cost: $104.50
- Optional Additions: Stalker Hat, White—$14.50; Cayuga Hat, White—$131.25; Drifter Hat, White—$25; Collar Overshirt, Blue (full sleeves)—$8
- Total Outfit Cost with Optional Items: $221.50
Other Notes
With the hats, I went back and forth on which hat to choose as the hat appears to be rounded and taller than the other outfits I’ve listed so far, but also, when searching for the exact hats it appears to be like the Stalker Hat. However, I chose the Military Scout Hat simply because it has the rope on top of the brim.
Even though it is on the side, and the hat in the film is on the front, I thought having this made it more realistic. However, a Stalker Hat or Cayuga Hat in white or beige could be used here as well. The Drifter Hat also is an alternative as even though it has a large stripe around the base not in the movie, the brim tilts up more than the other hats which is more like how it appears on-screen.
Note: Unfortunately, with the neckerchief equipped, you cannot leave the shirt collar open like it is in the film. This is something to keep in mind and you can alter what is more important to you.
4. A Nameless Preacher in Pale Rider (1985)
Pale Rider finds Eastwood playing yet another mysterious stranger; this time, a nameless preacher who comes to assist a scant prospecting town from a cutthroat mining executive who’s trying to obtain the land for his own greedy gain. After the preacher stands his ground against the mining leader’s thugs, the town bands together refusing to bow to his offers and leading to another legendary showdown.
I wanted to include the iconic outfit he wears throughout the film including the maroon warm winter coat and black hat he wears as he rides his white horse against the wintry landscape.
What You Need
- Hat: Stalker Hat, Black—$14.50.
- Neck/Torso: Neckerchief, Dark Red/Purple—$18.50; Classic Frock Coat, Brown—$18.50; Traditional Vest, Black—$18.75; French Dress Shirt, Gray—$35.
- Legs: Studded Pants, Light Black—$6.50.
- Boots: Worn Roper Boots, Black—$13.75; Western Rider Spurs, Black—$15.
- Accessories: Black Belts.
- Total Outfit Cost: $140.50
- Optional Additions: Lancer Vest, Black—$21; Durham Coat, Maroon—$157.75.
- Total Outfit Cost with Optional Items: $282
Other Notes
The Traditional Vest has no thick lining in the middle and it comes in a dark black which is ultimately why I chose it, despite the rips in it. An alternative to this would be the Black Lancer Vest, though it isn’t quite as dark as I would like; if it suits you, go for it.
The Durham Coat in Maroon matches perfectly with how the coat in the film buttons. It looks nice, but I decided against it just because the texture seems to be leatherier than that in Pale Rider. It’s up to you which one you choose.
But I prefer the Classic Frock Coat in Brown. In some stills from the film, the coat looks more red or maroon while in other shots it appears to be brown. The pricing is the same and the option is up to you whether you go with purple, red, or brown, but after mulling it over, I prefer the look with the brown better simply because in descriptions of the actual coat online it describes it as a “unique brown color” and I wanted to be as realistic as possible.
5. Will Munny in Unforgiven (1992)
In Eastwood’s final Western film to date, he plays Will Munny, a farmer who is far-removed from his youthful gunslinging days and currently focused on raising his children after their mother’s death. That is when his old partner comes to ask him to help with one final job and they, along with the “Schofield Kid,” head out to earn a bounty put up by a handful of prostitutes who want revenge on the men who violently disfigured one of their own. However, the town’s vindictive sheriff has vowed to not allow any vigilantes to carry out justice on their own.
Eastwood plays protagonist Will Munny and Morgan Freeman plays his old partner Ned Logan in Unforgiven.
This film was deemed by many critics to signify the “death of the Western,” even though they continued to be made after, but the amount and prominence of the films have certainly dwindled since it released. Additionally, Eastwood won two Oscars for Unforgiven (his first ones ever) for Best Picture and Best Director. When I think of this movie, which is one of my favorites, I think both of his simple farmer outfit at the beginning of the movie as well as his bundled-up outfit when he’s out seeking revenge. As a result, I will include both here.
What You Need-Farmer Outfit
- Neck/Torso: Neckerchief, Black—$18.50; Everyday Overshirt, Gray—$11.25; Crutchfield Suspenders, Brown—1 Gold Bar
- Legs: Clerk Pants, Light Brown—$20.50.
- Boots: Worn Roper Boots, Light Brown—$13.75
- Accessories: Brown Belts.
- Total Outfit Cost: $64 and 1 Gold Bar
- Optional Additions: Horsfall Overshirt, White or Gray—$20.
- Total Outfit Cost with Optional Items: $72.75 and 1 Gold Bar.
Other Notes
The only real alternate I went back and forth on for this outfit was the Horsfall Overshirt in white or gray which I think is another excellent top one can use for this outfit.
What You Need-Bounty Outfit
- Hat: Cayuga Hat, Light Brown—$131.25
- Neck/Torso: Neckerchief, Black—$18.50; Brakeman Jacket, Dark Brown—$82.25; French Dress Shirt, Red—$35.
- Legs: Studded Pants, Light Black—$6.50.
- Boots: Burnham Boots, Dark Brown—$92.50; Gerden Deluxe Spurs, Dark Brown—$65
- Accessories: Brown Belts. (Make sure you have an Off-Hand Holster equipped as well).
- Total Outfit Cost: $431
- Optional Additions: Classic Frock Coat, Brown—$18.50; Antoine Jacket, Brown—$78.25
- Total Outfit Cost with Optional Items: $427
Other Notes
I believe that the best matching jacket is the Brakeman Jacket in Dark Brown (the first option), but close alternatives that replicate the outfit in a lot of ways are the Classic Frock Coat or the Antoine Jacket, both in brown.
If there are any other legendary Eastwood outfits in Red Dead Online or those of another Western icon that you’d like to see, leave a comment and let me know what outfits you would like to see recreated next.
