Final Fantasy XIV Announces Pictomancer as the Dawntrail Magic DPS Class

During day 1 of the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2024, the second new class coming in the Dawntrail expansion was revealed to be the Pictomancer, a Ranged Magic DPS class who uses paint and their imagination to rain down artistic terror on their foes. Along with the initial reveal, we got to see their Job Gear, some of their skills, what level they start at and more.

Final Fantasy XIV Announces Pictomancer as the Dawntrail Magic DPS Class

Late last year, the first new DPS for Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail was revealed to be the deadly dual-wielding Viper with a tease at a second DPS class, a Ranged Magic DPS, to be revealed at a later date. During day 1 of the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2024 in Tokyo, that second class for Dawntrail was revealed to be Pictomancer, a long-running class from the Final Fantasy series.

The Pictomancer joins Black Mage, Summoner and Red Mage as the fourth Ranged Magical DPS in the game. Instead of tapping into leylines or conjuring beings of elemental power, Pictomancers use their imagination and artistic talents to attack opponents, with paint being their main magical medium. Their main weapon is a large Brush which they will use to bring beautiful (and dangerous) pieces of their imagination to life. With Job Gear reminiscent of a modern-day artist with paint-splattered garb, the Pictomancer certainly looks the part.

As for how the Pictomancer performs during combat in FFXIV, their ranged attacks can take the form of various paintings. Yoshi P was sure to say that, alongside the creatures and weapons you would expect a ranged DPS to paint, Pictomancer will also draw various landscapes to damage their foes.

Alongside the Fan Fest livestream, we also got a short Pictomancer Job showcase video which showed off the Pictomancer’s Job Gear in game as well as several attacks and skills. In it we saw Pictomancer calling down rivers of paint on their enemies, drawing up a beautiful starry night (which will probably result in some kind of buff), trapping creatures in a sketchy pile of rocks and much more. There’s even an attack where you summon a Moogle to help you rain down destructive chaos.

One thing mentioned by Yoshi P is that because “evoking such wonders takes time, the Pictomancer also keeps instant-cast abilities and spells at the ready.” This seems to imply that the Pictomancer’s strongest abilities, or at least their signature abilities, will take time to cast similar to Black Mage.

If you want to take up the Brush and become a Pictomancer once Dawntrail launches in Summer of 2024, you will start Class Quest in Gridania. Pictomancer doesn’t have any required prior classes (such as Conjurer for White Mage) meaning that you can immediately start playing it once the expansion launches if you own Dawntrail and have reached level 80 (the starting level for Pictomancer).

Pictomancer, Viper and everything else coming in Dawntrail will launch with the expansion in Summer 2024.
