An upcoming patch promises the return of the beloved FFXIV Hildibrand questlines. Fans have eagerly awaited the return of Hildibrand Manderville, agent of enquiry! Inspector extraordinaire! For the uninitiated, this specific series of quests were first introduced in A Realm Reborn. Technically, they existed prior in the 1.0 days, but players only have access to 2.0 onwards. The side-quests were designed with the intent by the developers of pushing the in-game animations. As a result, the quests are the testing site for some of the goofiest and most outlandish visuals in the game. While the inspector missed out on the Shadowbringers expansion, he is set to return during the Endwalker patch cycle. So, for any players looking to catch up on these wacky adventures, here is a guide to get you started.
Players looking for content to pursue in the meantime should consider this guide to the FFXIV Garo Event.
A Realm Reborn: Hildibrand Quests
For all but legacy players, the Warrior of Light’s introduction to the inspector occurs in Patch 2.1. Upon completing the main campaign, players can begin the adventures at level 50. This specific story involves a mysterious thief of antique artefacts, a wandering warrior, and even a hoard of zombies. The events follow from Hildibrand’s story in 1.0. For context, the inspector flew towards the Red Moon Dalamud five years prior. It’s as nonsensical in context as it is out. Just know that he has thus been missing for five years and is believed to have perished during the attempt. In addition to some good laughs, the quests do include some unique rewards. The final mission will reward you with Hildbrand’s attire and the Most Gentlemanly emote.
To begin the quests, you must speak to an NPC named Wymond in Ul’dah’s Steps of Nald. The quest you are looking is called “The Rise and Fall of Gentlemen.” Once you have begun the FFXIV Hildibrand questlines, it is easy enough to stay on track. Each quest typically ends where the next begins, so you shouldn’t get lost. However, you should know that these are fairly lengthy questlines. They are intended to last the entire expansion cycle, so there is plenty to enjoy.
In case you get side-tracked between quests, each new patch begins as follows:
- 2.2 – “The Science of Deduction” – Ellie, Eastern Thanalan (X:10.9, Y:16.4)
- 2.3 – “The Business of Betrothal” – Ellie, Western Thanalan (X:13.0, Y:14.1)
- 2.4 – “Eight-armed and Dangerous” – Ellie, Eastern La Noscea (X32.0, Y:30.4)
- 2.5 – “Shades of Sil’dih” – Ellie, Ul’dah – Steps of Thal (X: 9.8, Y:11.2)
Heavensward: Further Hildibrand Adventures
While the A Realm Reborn chapter of Hildibrand’s story once again concludes with him flying away, many more adventures await. The inspector’s next great mystery involves the strange unearthing of a Mammet named Gigi. Fans of the series will recognize his iconic design as that of Vivi’s from Final Fantasy IX. The story is also the first instance of seeing various familiar faces returning to accompany Hildi’s story. In addition to the return of his ever-loyal companion Nashu, fan-favourites such as the Mandervilles also appear. The story becomes about family, time magic and heresy. Of course, it’s still told through the utter absurdity that is the FFXIV Hildibrand questlines. As for the main rewards of these quests, players can expect to receive a Gigi minion.
To begin the Heavensward series of quests, players will once again have to complete the expansion’s story. Additionally, the Hildibrand quests are linear, and thus you must have completed the adventures prior in A Realm Reborn. The first quest is called “A Gentleman Falls, Rather than Flies.” The mission is easier to find due to the quest-giver being a familiar face. Find Nashu in The Pillars in Ishgard (X:5.9, Y:9.9) to begin searching for the inspector.
While there are fewer quests than in ARR, the first quests of each patch after 3.2 are as follows:
- 3.3 – “The Gigi Situation” – Cyr, Ishgard – Foundation (X:9.9, Y:11.4)
- 3.4 – “A Gazebo to Call Our Own” – Cyr, Ishgard – Foundation (X:9.9, Y:11.4)
- 3.5 – “The Proud and the Pointy-eyed” – Cyr, Ishgard – Foundation (X:9.9, Y:11.4)
Stormblood: Even Further Hildibrand Adventures
By this point in your journeys with Hildibrand, you will probably have deduced the pattern. Each story concludes with the inspector sent soaring towards his next great mystery. This often results in him becoming lost and in need of rescue. This time, Nashu has journeyed to Kugane in search of the missing Manderville. The story occurs across maps in Doma, with the narrative taking on a more Eastern-inspired form of storytelling. More familiar faces return, as does a story about a sword-thief. More unwitting characters are also roped into the madness of a Hildibrand story. Of course, it offers just as many laughs as before. It also introduces the iconic Manderville Mambo emote as a final reward, creating a dance of Hildi’s famous moves.
To continue the FFXIV Hildibrand questlines in Stormblood, players must once again reach the expansion’s end in 4.0. The first quest was released in 4.1, titled “A Hingan Tale: Nashu Goes East.” It can be a little trickier to spot due to it being provided by an unknown NPC. Seek out the Conspicuously Inconspicuous Man in Kugane (X:10.6, Y:9.8).
This series of quests is longer than the Heavensward missions, spanning the full patch cycle. The first quests of each chapter after 4.1 are as follows:
- 4.25 – “Life Imitates Art Imitates Life” – Nashu, Kugane (X:11.7, Y:8.8)
- 4.35 – “In the Eye of the Hingan” – Shigure, Kugane (X:13.2, Y:13.3)
- 4.45 – “The Black Heart Beneath” – Shigure, Kugane (X:12.5, Y:8.1)
- 4.56 – “The Past Is Never Past” – Nashu, Kugane (X:10.5, Y:8.1)
Endwalker: Somehow Even Further Hildibrand Adventures
Sadly, our beloved inspector didn’t quite make it into the Shadowbringers expansion. This was quite surprising given that the ending of the Stormblood quests implied he would be heading to another world. The stage seemed perfectly set for a Hildi story on The First. Well, it seems that was indeed the intention, and thankfully still is. The recent trailer showed Hildibrand very clearly stood in Norvrandt. He was jokingly referred to as being an expansion behind. However, he did briefly make a cameo during a 5.3 dungeon called “The Heroes Gauntlet.”
Despite his appearance in the trailer, the FFXIV Hildibrand questlines won’t be continuing until a later update. Until patch 6.15, players will have time to pursue other activities such as the game’s extreme trials. 6.1 also introduced a new Alliance Raid and revamped PvP, so there’s plenty to keep you occupied until Hildi’s return.
