This quick and easy guide will show you how to complete the Gloom-Borne Illness side quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which will lower the prices of the Kakariko Village armour shop. This quest asks you to find ingredients for a special kind of porridge, and we'll show you where to find all the ingredients you need.

Tears of the Kingdom | Gloom-Borne Illness Porridge Guide (How to Lower Kakariko Shop Prices)

There are plenty of new places to explore in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, from the Sky Islands to the Depths and beyond. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to return to places from Breath of the Wild such as Kakariko Village. With a calming atmosphere, old friends to visit and mysteries to unearth, Kakariko is a really important place to visit. The village even has an armour shop with two sets of armour that you’ll definitely want to pick up. The problem is that the price of these armour sets is incredibly high, meaning that they’ll be out of reach for most players.

There is a solution, though. If you complete the Gloom-Borne Illness side quest by making a special kind of Gloom-healing porridge, the shop prices will actually return to normal. The armour sets on offer include the much beloved Sheikah Stealth suit, so you’ll definitely want to pick them up at a fair price.

Here’s how to complete the Gloom-Borne Illness quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and lower the shop prices in Kakariko Village.

Where is Kakariko Village in Tears of the Kingdom?

Kakariko Village is one of the major areas of civilisation in Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom. It can be found southeast of Lookout Landing, nestled into a series of mountains and hills.

The easiest way to reach Kakriko is to simply follow the road east from Lookout Landing. Follow the path as it snakes down south and towards Sahasra Slope (which also has a Skyview Tower for you to activate) and finally end up right on Kakariko’s doorstep.

Since Breath of the Wild, Kakariko Village hasn’t changed much… well, aside from the Sky Island ruins that now litter the place. Kakariko is a very important place in Tears of the Kingdom and you’ll likely be returning her often. This is why you’ll want to pick up some sweet new armour while you’re here.

Enchanted Armour Shop

Once you’re in Kakariko Village, you need to find the Enchanted Armour Shop. This will be marked on your map like other armour shops, and it can be found across the walkway from when Paya is researching the Ring Ruins.

Upon entering the shop, you’ll likely be pleased to see two full sets of armour for sale: the famous Sheikah Stealth armour and the glow-in-the-dark Radiant armour. What’s less pleasing is the price. On your first visit, every single item will cost 5000 Rupees – an incredibly hefty sum at any point in the game.

Speaking to the lady at the counter will reveal that the prices are this high because her Grandma is ill. She has been stricken with the Gloom from the depths, so the price hike in the shop is to help find a cure. She will also mention that her sister, Lasli, is looking for some kind of cure and that she’ll be able to put the shop back to normal once her Grandma gets better.

Gloom-Borne Illness Quest

To save this poor old woman (and get a discount for that sweet armour), you need to first find Lasli in Kakariko Village. She can be found close to Enchanted, resting next to a cooking pot past a grove of pumpkins. Speaking to Lasli will allow you to learn more about her Grandma and her condition.

The only food her Grandma can stomach right now is porridge and Lasli has been trying to find a way to include items that can cure Gloom in said porridge to no avail. That’s where you come in: offer to help and you’ll start the Gloom-Borne Illness quest.

Lasli will then give you the ingredient list required for making her grandmother’s favourite porridge: Fresh Milk, Hylian Rice and Wild Greens. All you need to do is find a way to include something to cure Gloom.

What Ingredients Do You Need?

What Ingredients Do You Need?

Hylian Rice and Fresh Milk

The first two ingredients you need to collect are Hylian Rice and Fresh Milk. Fortunately, there’s a really easy way to get your hands on both of these items in Kakariko Village.

Right outside the village entrance in the canyon to the west is a trader on horseback. They sell various wares and items that can aid Link on his journey, including the Fresh Milk and Hylian Rice you need. Each ingredient costs 12 Rupees, a pittance, allowing you to get these back to Lasli quickly.

A word of caution, though. This trader may end up disappearing in bad weather such as rain (at least they did when I passed through this area after completing the quest). If this happens, wait until the rain stops and return here to pick up your ingredients.

Wild Greens

Next up are the Wild Greens. Now, this terminology refers to a variety of different plants across Hyrule – basically anything considered green and leafy – so you have a fair amount of choice. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Hearty Radish
  • Cool, Warm and Electric Safflina
  • Mighty Thistle
  • Silent Princess
  • Blue Nightshade

The safest bet, though, is Hyrule Herbs. These small buds can be found all over Hyrule Field, the area close by to Lookout Landing. Fortunately, there’s a patch of some Hyrule Herbs just down the road from the base, making for an easy pick-up if you don’t have one.

Sundelion

The final ingredient you need is the one which cures the Gloom. That ingredient is a single Sundelion. These plants are pretty rare, small yellow plants which only seem to grow on Sky Islands. When used in cooking, a meal with Sundelions included will give you resistance to the Gloom seen in the Depths.

At this point in the game, you’ve likely collected a fair few Sundelions during your time in Tears of the Kingdom. If you’re a bit skint, though, and need a quick injection of Sundelions, head to the Northern Necluad Sky Archipelago. You can easily get here using the Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower.

Honestly, if you wander around any Sky Island long enough, you’re bound to run into at least one Sundelion. This patch of Sky Islands, though, will give you about 10 or so Sundelions if you explore the whole thing.

Making the Porridge

Once you’ve collected all of your ingredients, it’s time to make the porridge. The easiest place to do this is right next to Lasli, as she’s right next to a cooking pot and it’ll save you some time.

When you’re ready, grab one of each ingredient from your inventory: Fresh Milk, Hylian Rice, Hyrule Herb (or any other Wild Green) and a Sundelion. You only need one of each to make this recipe. Then, simply drop them into the pot. Should all have gone well, you’ll be given the Sunny Veggie Porridge, a meal which can heal those afflicted with Gloom. All you need to do now is give Lasli the porridge. This will start a small series of events leading to the end of the quest. Grandma is safe, Lasli’s off to Hateno to study fashion and now the prices in the shop can go back to normal: win-win for everyone involved!

Speaking of the shop, the prices in Enchanted have reached much more affordable levels. The Sheikah Stealth armour will run you about 1800 Rupees for the whole thing (500 for the helmet, 700 for the chest and 600 for the legs). Meanwhile, the Radiant set is a bit more pricey at 2400 Rupees (800 for each piece).

That was how to complete the Gloom-Borne Illness quest in Tears of the Kingdom and lower the armour shop prices in Kakariko Village.

Sundelion counts as the green, so you just need milk, rice, and the sundelion to make the porridge.
