Octoroks are one of the many creature types that Link will come across during his journey. They are octopus-based monster that prefers ambush hunting over direct confrontation. Being highly adaptable, and capable of evolving into any environment they are especially hearty in the food chain. While not being the most common creature type throughout Hyrule, they are nonetheless a deadly foe if caught off guard. They have many variations, and each is specialized for their specific biome; having features that are fitting for such adaptations. Some will have pronounced cannon-like muzzles while others use a special appendage to attach a stone or shrub to them.
These creatures have the unique ability to shoot rocks of various elemental types at a combatant; focusing on sense-based triggers. The closer you get to an Octoroks position, the more likely they are to reveal themselves and take a potshot in your general direction. Unfortunately, these creatures are limited to firing these shots in the location they sensed you in. Because of this, constant repositioning is a great way to avoid their deadly projectiles. These creatures have a fair amount of parts that can be looted, and each is useful in its own right! As a testament to just how far nature will go, these, like the mighty Chuchu, are not creatures created for Ganondorf’s army. Instead, they exist as a form of elemental fauna that acts accordingly with malicious intentions.

Octorok Types
Octoroks are a type of creature that can be found throughout Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom. They resemble an octopus with an inflated head, and like to shoot projectiles at the player’s location. Octoroks are a form of ambush hunter that attacks upon sensing someone in their vicinity. There are several major types of Octoroks for most environments. Because of this, they are one of the most versatile creature types in Tears of the Kingdom, having water, forest, rock, snow, and treasure variations. Typically these creatures are named after the environment they choose to ambush people in. In lue of the fact that they are ambush hunters, they are one of the more hostile creatures you will come across in Hyrule.
Water Octorok
Water Octoroks prefer to spend their time in bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and streams. They pop out of the water when Link travels too close to the embankment and will shoot rocks from their mouth. They appear a blue color with yellow eyes and a form of natural wavy camouflage. Their pronounced mouth works like a cannon as they seemingly use the inflation of their balloons to fire these projectiles. While these water Octoroks can be a challenge due to the fact they’re in the water. A well-placed arrow shot particularly with yellow Chuchu jelly attached can dispatch them quickly. The rocks they fire can be bounced back by a shield as per the official description in the game!
Forest Octorok
Though you might find it odd that an octopus would be able to adapt to live on land, forest Octoroks have learned to live among trees and shrubs. Disguising themselves as patches of grass and bushes, they go unassuming until the moment they wish to strike. Unlike their aquatic variation, these Octoroks have green camouflage that resembles woodland patterns. Their orange eyes are more pronounced, and their mouth droops ever so slightly. These creatures act like water Octoroks except in a forest environment making them a unique combatant.
Rock Octorok
Existing in mountainous regions, and living under stones, the rock Octorok is an interesting adaptation of their base species. Existing in hot dry places where the terrain is rocky and unforgiving, these creatures seek to ambush any who pass them. With a camouflage that resembles rocks, their browns and Grey’s are honestly quite appealing. They can be found with a rock attached to their head via a special hand-like appendage on the top of their head. Their orange eyes are sloped inward, and their projectile shooting mouth is stubby as to restrict being hurt under a rock. They are more durable than your standard Octorok, and hit a little harder. One thing to note is the projectiles they shoot are flaming rocks that can set Link ablaze!
Snow Octorok
On the opposite side of the spectrum, Snow Octoroks are a potent variation of their species that have adapted for colder environments. They disguise themselves as shrubs and plant life that naturally fits into their snowy environment. These creatures have a light camouflage coloring that’s a mix of whites blues and Grey’s that allows them to hide in blizzards. They have a very pronounced cannon with wider features since they shoot snowballs rather than rocks. Additionally, they seem to attach shrubs to themselves similar to how a rock Octorok will attach rocks to their head through a similar appendage. Unlike most Octoroks, these creatures deal low amounts of damage and seek to cause freezing amongst those they target. This adaptation seems more natural than their rock variant due to the fact that these normally aquatic creatures could moisten themselves in snow!
Treasure Octorok
Finally, the rarest variation of Octoroks is that of the treasure variety. They are incredibly few and far between, staying in particular places; typically hiding under treasure chests. Treasure Octoroks are very patient creatures, being able to stay still until something approaches them very close. With the ability to suck up items and surrounding rocks they can turn anything into a projectile. They will disguise themselves as treasure chests only to attack when someone’s foolish enough to try and open it. They are a yellow color with turquoise eyes, and a short fat cannon. Their small tentacles and large balloon head suggest that they are slow and powerful; dealing massive damage upon contact.
Locations
Octoroks are found in locations that fit their particular variation. For instance, water Octoroks will only be found in the water, and rock Octoroks will only be found in the mountains. They are able to be spotted through rustling or movement with otherwise inanimate objects which gives away their location. Being a form of octopus, they prefer to be in environments that match their natural camouflage. Their migration patterns and evolution from water-based creatures to being in most major environments suggest highly adaptive behaviors. They are extremely hostile ambush hunters that are a common staple throughout Hyrule!
Water Octorok
Water Octoroks can often be found in any body of water around Lanaryu Great Springs, and West Necluda. They are a slightly uncommon enemy type, however, are very manageable to deal with. They will pop out of the water in order to shoot a rock in Links perceived location. Despite the fact that they prefer stealth and ambush hunting, they become very obvious once they appear. When in the water they will be nearly undetectable; making it a bit of a jump scare when they make an appearance. They won’t go near frozen waters or near extreme heat sources and are not present during thunderstorms. Water Octoroks are usually found as either an individual or as a pair in waterways suggesting slightly solitary behavior.
Forest Octorok
Forest Octoroks are particularly interesting as they can be found in woodlands, particularly in Hyrule Ridge, and Deep Akkala. They prefer to hide in shrubs and trees which shake more often than regular foliage. While forest Octoroks are especially dangerous on land due to their ability to hide, they are relatively easy to kill. Like their aquatic variety, they prefer to use rocks and other projectiles that can be shot from their mouth. Forest Octoroks are almost completely solitary and will try to spend their time ambush-hunting on their own. For the most part, these creatures are extremely hostile and have adapted themselves to live on land perfectly.
Rock Octorok
When traveling through the regions of Death Mountain and Eldin Canyon you are very likely to encounter rock Octoroks. These creatures prefer hiding under small boulders which gives them natural protection from the heat of the region. They can be quite difficult to spot however are given away by boulder shaking without warning. They can additionally be found at the marakuguc shrine, and around Goron city. These creatures can also be found at the momisik shrines as well as a few others. It’s unclear why these Octoroks chose a mountainous terrain to live near, notably because there aren’t many bodies of water near them that they could have adapted from. For this reason, it’s thought that rock Octoroks are one of the more specialized variations of their species!
Snow Octorok
Snow Octoroks can be found in some of the harshest cold environments throughout Hyrule. Sticking to the Gerudo Highlands and the Hebra Mountains they enjoy extreme conditioning. In these locations, they will dig themselves into the snow with their shrubbery in order to look unassuming. Once they sense something passing them they will seek to bombard them with wet snow in order to cool their body down to hypothermic temperatures. Perhaps because of this, these creatures are one of the most deadly as they utilize their environmental effects to the fullest. Most importantly, these creatures can be spotted by shrubbery rustling in the snow unnaturally more so than during high winds. An interesting exploit of Treasure Octoroks is they can suck up a dropped weapon or shield and shoot it back at full durability.
Treasure Octorok
Treasure Octoroks tend to hide beneath treasure chests in very particular locations. They can be commonly found in regions such as the Faron Grasslands and Gerudo Highlands. They can also be found specifically at the otutsuim shrine outside the SkyView tower in that location. These creatures don’t tend to move very far and will stay in place until something comes along to bother them. In a sense, these are the rarest variation of their species and are few and far between. There aren’t a lot of details as to why these creatures choose treasure chests to hide under besides that they have grown accustomed to ambushing sentient life. They are one of the most powerful versions of the Octorok, and can’t be differentiated until it’s too late.
Monster Parts
There are three different types of parts that can be acquired from Octoroks. The basic eyeballs can be used to create dyes, and elixirs as well as can be used for armor upgrades. Octorok tentacles are another crafting ingredient that can be used for elixirs. Unfortunately, it’s too acidic to be used in cooking and has a base fusion of 3, providing a short whip effect to weapons. Finally octo balloons are great for making an object float up into the air such as a platform or a Korok. These ingredients are the same throughout any variation of Octorok however treasure ones also drop a large amount of rupees.
Creature tactics
Octoroks tend to be great ambush hunters; being masters of their environment at large. These creatures are notable for the fact they hide beneath the surface of a biome until they sense something they wish to attack. Once they detect something too close they will pop out of hiding and fire a projectile in its detected location. Fortunately, it will only shoot where they initially detected a creature making them easy to avoid. Depending on the type of Octorok, they may be more likely to surface than others. For example, water and forest Octoroks are less patient than the rock and treasure varieties. For this reason, they can be tricky to find, and trickier to deal with if you aren’t prepared.
Player Strategies
Luckily, since Octoroks have the limitations of firing a projectile specifically where they detect you, they have limited damage potential. By constantly repositioning yourself before each attack you can avoid their means of attacking. Octoroks will not engage in melee, trying to run away when rushed too close making them easy to kill. Additionally, because of their low health, a well-placed arrow with colored Chuchu jelly can quickly dispatch them. You can spot most Octoroks based on the movement of normally inanimate objects such as shrubs, rocks and trees. For this reason, it can be easy to get the drop on them once you take the time to learn their patterns.
