The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gives new players a single battery near the start of the game. This battery is used to activate a plethora of Zonai devices. Zonai fans, rockets, wheels, hydrants, flame emitters, and many more items simply will not work if you don’t have energy stored in your battery. It unfortunately drains quite rapidly if you are using multiple Zonai items at the same time. Flux Constructs and various other kinds of Construct enemies will drop Zonai Charges when defeated. Zonai Charges can be used to temporarily extend the battery life, but that’s merely a temporary solution.
Thankfully, there is a way to gain many permanent battery upgrades. Doing so will, however, require a lot of Zonaite mineral collecting. This means that players who prefer exploring the inner depths of the chasm will be at an advantage. In fact, exploring a specific part of Hyrule’s depths will allow for more consistent battery upgrade methods.
Here is every step you’ll need to be able to upgrade your battery supply to the highest level in Tears of the Kingdom.

Collecting Zonaite Ore in the Depths
You can find Zonaite a few different ways, but the fastest method is to look for ore within the depths. Bokoblins, Moblins, and other monsters will often set up mining posts around Zonaite ore deposits. The enemies at these mines can even drop additional Zonaite upon defeating them, so fighting them is worth your time. There are also some ancient Zonai mines spread throughout TotK’s depths. These abandoned mines often contain large Zonaite deposits.
Zonaite Ore Harvesting Tips
- Attach rocks to weapons with the Fuse ability. Rock-infused weapons make mining ore easier.
- Throwing or shooting a bomb at a large cluster of ore is an easy way to gather a lot of Zonaite. Bomb flowers occasionally grow near large clumps of ore.
- Sage of Fire Yunobo’s rolling attack can also break giant groups of ore effectively.
- Overworld bosses such as Frox will drop a lot of Zonaite while fighting them. This guide details how to find an Obsidian Frox.
- You will need several thousand Zonaite to be able to craft all the batteries, so you should be collecting this ore at every opportunity possible.
Trading Zonaite for Crystallized Charges
Two kinds of Construct NPCs are vital for obtaining additional Battery Wells. Luckily, you can find both in the tutorial area of the game. This makes the Great Island a valuable location for new players looking to enhance their battery storage. The first of the NPCs you’ll need to find is known as a Forge Construct. You’re almost guaranteed to pass one near the south side of the Great Sky Island near the start of your playthrough.
Additional Forge Construct Location
There is a different Forge Construct that you may wish to unlock instead, simply due to how close it is to a fast-travel spot. It is located in the Great Abandoned Central Mine. This mine is directly beneath the Great Plateau. More specifically, it is directly below the surface’s Temple of Time. You may need to defeat the Master Kohga boss fight in this area first if you haven’t already. Use this guide to help you find Master Kohga and the Autobuild ability. If you have defeated Kohga of the Yiga clan, then the Construct NPC will be standing near a forge. Nearby this Forge Construct is a shelf that contains many glowing objects. This is a shop that allows you to trade Zonaite for Zonai Charges and Crystallized Charges. The items you want from this shop are the Crystallized Charges on the right side of the shelf.
It’ll cost 3 small Zonaite to buy a single Crystallized Charge, and 1 Large Zonaite to buy a Large Crystallized Charge. Large Crystallized Charges are actually just 20 regular Crystallized Charged grouped together. Buying it will simply add 20 to your inventory, rather than it actually being an entirely separate item. This shop also sells Zonai Charges, but you will not need them for this specific process. Note that these shop can run out of supply, but will be refilled after a Blood Moon occurs.
First Master Kohga Boss Fight Tips
- Be careful of the various vehicles he can spawn.
- Try shooting him with an arrow. This may require running behind the car he is driving.
- He can’t fight back if you manage to get onto his Zonai contraption.
- You can use the Autobuild ability to make yourself a car to drive on. This can make it harder for some of Kohga’s attacks to hit you.
Create Energy Wells at a Crystal Refinery
Energy Wells (occasionally referred to as Energy Cells) are what make up your batteries. One Energy Well is equal to a third of a battery. You don’t need to build three at a time since the game does let you use partially made batteries, and all future Energy Wells that you create will just add onto that already existing battery until it is complete. The easiest Crystal Refinery to reach is one on the Great Sky Island. It is located near the Nachoyah Shrine near the south end of the floating land mass. A Construct with a Crystal Refinery should be visible from near the fast-travel location. Offer that Construct 100 Crystallized Charges so that it can create an Energy Well.
Energy Wells will slowly build up on Link’s belt as you create them. The amount you have will also be displayed in the top right corner of the loading screen. Zelda Tears of the Kingdom also contains a few other Crystal Refinery Constructs, such as one near Lookout Landing, but you do not need to find them all. A single friendly Construct is all that’s needed to work a Crystal Refinery.
Supplies Needed for Maximum Battery Upgrades
The maximum amount of batteries you can have is 16. The first one is free for all players, while the other 15 must be crafted through the method mentioned above. This means you will need to make 45 Energy Wells (for a total of 48) using 4,500 Crystallized Charges. The amount of Zonaite you need will vary drastically depending on how many Large Zonaite you find. You will need 13,500 regular Zonaite in the absolute worst case scenario, but realistically Large Zonaite will reduce that number drastically. You will only need 675 if you choose to only use Large Zonaite to create Crystallized Charges.
