On January 31st, with the first PlayStation’s state of play in 2024, many highly-anticipated titles were introduced to come for PS5 in the future. Among them, Hideo Kojima shined bright like a diamond, as he released an official trailer for the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. The story is the sequel to DS1. Sam Bridges, played by Norman Reedus, still plays the main role, and he has to save humanity from extinction. The 10-minute trailer also presented the lovely previous cast such as Lea Seydoux as Fragile, and Troy Baker as the new-face Higgs Monaghan. The game will be released in 2025.
However, there was one person fans hoped to see in the trailer, but it didn’t happen. Cliff Unger, played by the magnificent Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen. Cliff was one of the most important characters in DS1. Sam had to get involved in multiple fights with him during his journey. The absence of Cliff made Death Stranding‘s lovers feel skeptical about his presence in the sequel.
Kojima Confirmed He Won’t Come Back in Death Stranding 2
Sadly, the rumors turned into reality only a few days later. The director, Hideo Kojima, officially announced that Mads is not appearing in DS2. He reassured that Cliff will remain in the story of Death Stranding and in our memories forever. While the decision left some fans upset that he is never going to show up, others were in agreement and felt satisfied by this pleasing ending for Cliff’s character.

If you have PLAYED DS1 to the end, you will understand. Cliff is a character who played a very important and special role in Death Stranding. Mads understood this and performed it beautifully. Mads’ Cliff will remain in the story of Death Stranding and in your memories forever. It is because we care about the character of Cliff that he will not appear in DS2. Please understand.
