Subnautica 2 Best Base Locations Guide – Where to Build First

Find the best Subnautica 2 base locations for each stage of the game, from your Lifepod starter setup to stronger resource bases and later forward outposts.

Subnautica 2 Best Base Locations Guide – Where to Build FirstSubnautica 2 is in Early Access, so the best base locations should be judged by usefulness, not scenery. A strong base should keep you close to resources, give you a clean power plan, reduce long swims, and support the next stage of progression.

For the current build, the safest route is to start near the Lifepod, move to Old Habitat for resources, use Cicada Wreck for story progression, avoid overbuilding in the Heat Caves, and then build near the Alien Ruins Research Station once you reach that point.

1. Best Base Locations

Lifepod Starting area

Each recommended location solves a different problem. The Lifepod is the safest first stop, Old Habitat is the best early mining base, Cicada Wreck works best as a forward resource, and the Heat Caves are only worth using as a temporary stop.

For late-game progression, build near Alien Ruins Research Station to complete the adaptation route and farming rare materials like Troilite.

Base Location Best Use Key Resources
Lifepod area First starter base Safe oxygen, storage, fabricator access, and a nearby current later
Old Habitat Early resource farming Copper, silver, titanium, cave oxygen, and natural current access
Cicada Wreck Lead and forward progression Lead, quartz, copper, titanium, and a long current beside the wreck
Heat Caves Temporary staging point Useful travel stop before the game pushes farther east
Alien Ruins Research Station Later-game outpost Saves travel time and supports upgrades, storage, and deeper exploration

2. First Starter Base: Lifepod Area

Lifepod starting base

Lifepod starting base

The best first base location is directly under or beside the Lifepod. This is not the best permanent location, but it is the safest start because the Lifepod already gives you oxygen, storage, a fabricator, NOA, and a respawn point.

Staying close also helps while Solar Panels are your main power source, since your first base can lose power at night before you unlock better options.

  1. Place one small base section under or beside the Lifepod.
  2. Add a Hatch.
  3. Add Solar Panels for early power.
  4. Add storage, but keep it compact.
  5. Use the Lifepod as extra support instead of rebuilding everything immediately.
  6. Later, use the strong current around 60 meters east of the Lifepod for Hydroelectric Turbines.

3. Old Habitat: Early Resource Farming

Old Habitat base location

Old Habitat base location

Old Habitat is the best early-game location if you keep running out of crafting materials. It is around 300 meters directly north of the Lifepod, near ruined base remains and large rock structures. The caves under the rocks contain copper, silver, and titanium, and the cave bunker gives you an oxygen stop while mining.

  1. Travel roughly 300 meters north from the Lifepod.
  2. Look for the ruined Old Habitat area and large rock structures.
  3. Build slightly away from the surface patrol area.
  4. Keep the base close enough to the cave entrance for quick mining runs.
  5. Add storage first, because this location is mainly for resources.
  6. Use the cave route for copper, silver, and titanium.
  7. Use the bunker inside the cave as an oxygen stop.
  8. Add Hydroelectric Turbine power later by using the natural current between the rock structures.

4. Cicada Wreck: Lead and Story Progression

Cicada Wreck and Lead Zone base location

Cicada Wreck is the best forward base for lead farming and story progression. It is around 400 meters northeast of the Lifepod and appears as Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage) when you get close.

The area is murky, but it has a high amount of lead, plus quartz, copper, some titanium, and a long current beside the wreck for turbine power.

  1. Travel around 400 meters northeast from the Lifepod.
  2. Look for the large Cicada Wreck / Lander Garage wreckage.
  3. Build near the long current beside the wreck, not inside cramped wreckage paths.
  4. Add storage for lead, quartz, copper, and titanium.
  5. Keep food, water, and spare batteries here for longer trips.
  6. Use this as your forward base before pushing deeper northeast.

5. Heat Caves: Temporary Staging Point

Heat Caves base

Heat Caves base

Build a small Heat Caves base only if you need a safe stop for the Tadpole Pens route. You need the Heat Tolerance Adaptation before entering this route, so prepare first, use this for supplies and resource runs, then move your main base investment toward the Alien Ruins Research Station later.

The Heat Caves are worth visiting for Zip’s black box, the Tadpole Pens door code, the nearby supply crate, scans, and resources like Lithium, Gold, Sulfur, and Titanium. Do not turn this into your main storage.

  1. Build only a small staging base before or near the Heat Caves route.
  2. Do not build deep inside the cave path, since the route gets narrow and the Tadpole cannot safely continue into the deepest section.
  3. Add a Hatch, basic storage, and minimal power.
  4. Store food, water, spare batteries, healing items, and an extra power cell.
  5. Leave storage space for Lithium, Gold, Sulfur, and Titanium runs.
  6. Use this base before going after Zip’s black box and the Tadpole Pens door code.
  7. Revisit the Heat Caves after the objective if you missed scans, resources, or the supply crate.
  8. Save major building materials for the later Alien Ruins Research Station outpost.

6. Alien Ruins Research Station: Late-Game Outpost

Alien Ruins Base

Alien Ruins Base

The Alien Ruins Research Station area is the best later base because it saves you from repeating a long and dangerous trip back to the Lifepod. After the Tadpole Pens, the route sends you more than 600 meters east across open seabed with a Collector Leviathan threat.

Once you reach the Research Station, build nearby so you can store new materials, craft upgrades, and continue exploring from a safer forward outpost.

  1. Bring titanium, quartz, copper, silver, food, water, healing items, batteries, and a spare power cell before leaving.
  2. Reach the Alien Ruins Research Station after the Tadpole Pens route.
  3. Power the station by inserting a battery in the bedroom.
  4. Interact with NOA in the command room.
  5. Build your base near the Research Station.
  6. Use a nearby natural current for Hydroelectric Turbine power.
  7. Scan and build the Modification Station for tool and vehicle upgrades.
  8. Store later-region materials here instead of hauling everything back to the Lifepod.

7. Best Power Setup for Each Base Location

Hydroelectric Turbine

Hydroelectric Turbine

Power should match the location. Use Solar Panels for shallow areas, Hydroelectric Turbines near natural currents, and Thermal Plants only where the area has usable heat. Power Transmitters are important when the power source is not directly beside your base.

Base Location Best Early Power Best Long-Term Power
Lifepod Area Solar Panels Hydroelectric Turbine near the current east of the Lifepod
Old Habitat Solar Panels Hydroelectric Turbine near the current between the rock structures
Cicada Wreck Solar Panels Hydroelectric Turbine beside the wreck current
Heat Caves Thermal Plant, if unlocked and placed near usable heat Thermal Plant + Power Transmitters
Alien Ruins Research Station Hydroelectric Turbine near a natural current Hydroelectric Turbine + backup Bioreactor
