1. What Biobed Upgrades Give You
Biobeds are found inside colony outposts and abandoned habitats. The upgrade does not come from sleeping in the bed itself; you need to interact with the terminal beside the Biobed. These upgrades are permanent and come in two types: Endurance and Dexterity.
You start with 20 inventory slots and five hotbar spaces, so the Endurance upgrades should be a priority if you are constantly running out of space.
| Biobed Upgrade | Upgrade Effect |
|---|---|
| Endurance | Adds +3 inventory slots |
| Dexterity | Adds +1 tool slot / keybind |
2. All Biobed Locations
There are seven Biobed upgrade locations in the current Early Access build. Most are inside Colonist Bunkers, while the Cicada Wreck upgrade is found inside the wreck area instead of a normal bunker.
| Biobed Location | Location & Distance From Lifepod | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Chap’s Blackbox | 220m southeast; inside a cave bunker tied to the Chap blackbox route | +3 inventory slots |
| Quaker’s Meetinghouse | 250m southwest; below the ruined wall section hanging off a cliff, near the marked hidden entrance | +3 inventory slots |
| Anita’s Garden | 220m northeast; compass angle 60, then look for the cliffside cave entrance | +3 inventory slots |
| Salvage Bunker | 200m north-northeast; compass angle 15, near the Digestion Angel Comb route and blue-green coral cave opening | +1 tool slot / hotbar slot |
| Nahema’s Lab | 380m southeast; volcanic biome, requires Heat Tolerance Adaptation | +1 tool slot / hotbar slot |
| Cicada Wreck: Empty Hold | 480m east; inside the Cicada Wreck, requires Heat Tolerance Adaptation | +3 inventory slots |
| Sophie’s Retreat | 440m north; past Old Habitat, then about 60m farther north near the Pent plant cave | +3 inventory slots |
2.1. Anita’s Garden
Prioritize Anita’s Garden early if inventory space is slowing you down: its Endurance upgrade adds +3 slots, but the cave route makes oxygen management important. Follow the current and red kelp tunnel landmarks carefully.
- Start from the Lifepod and head toward the east / northeast current route.
- Look for the underwater current that pulls you downward into a cave system.
- Ride the current down into the cavern.
- Look for Alterra crates, a Wakemaker fragment, and a recording as route landmarks.
- Search the northeast side of the cavern for a tunnel with red kelp.
- Swim through the red kelp tunnel to reach the bunker.
- Interact with the terminal beside the Biobed to unlock the Endurance upgrade.
2.2. Salvage Bunker
The Salvage bunker is important because it gives a Dexterity upgrade instead of more inventory space. This means you get an extra tool slot / keybind, which is useful once your hotbar starts filling with the Scanner, Repair Tool, Wakemaker, Sonic Resonator, and other tools.
- Travel roughly north-northeast from the Lifepod.
- Look for the area near the Angel Comb Adaptation.
- Find the cave opening beside a ledge with Alterra equipment.
- Swim down toward the bottom of the opening.
- Look left near the bottom to find the bunker route.
- Enter the outpost and interact with the Biobed terminal.
- Scan the Repair Tool and Habitat Builder if you still need those blueprints.
2.3. Quaker’s Meetinghouse
Quaker’s Meetinghouse is tied to the Chap blackbox route, so many players find it naturally while following early story progression. It gives an Endurance upgrade, making it another strong early target for increasing inventory space.
- Travel southeast from the Lifepod toward the Chap blackbox objective route.
- Look for a cave near a large rock structure or pillar landmark.
- Watch for a Coral Crab near the cave area.
- Enter the cave and move through the bunker path.
- Find the Biobed inside the outpost.
- Interact with the terminal to unlock the upgrade.
- Scan the Bioreactor if you have not unlocked it yet.
Unauthorized NOA Modification is another Endurance upgrade location, found to the southwest of the Lifepod near a cliff and ruined colony structure. It is deeper than the easiest early locations, so bring better oxygen before staying too long.
- Swim southwest from the Lifepod.
- Look for cliffs dropping into deeper water.
- Continue along the cliff edge until you spot ruins or metal structures near the shelf.
- Use the ruined structure as your landmark.
- Look for the bunker hatch built into the cliff wall.
- Enter the bunker and use the Biobed terminal.
- Scan the Tadpole Fragment and other useful interior objects before leaving.
2.5. Sophie’s Retreat
Sophie’s Retreat is near the Old Habitat side of the map, making it a good upgrade to grab when you are already traveling north for resources or sandbox progression.
- Travel north-northeast from the Lifepod toward the Old Habitat area.
- Use Old Habitat as the main landmark once it appears.
- Near the “Welcome Home” sign, turn right and enter the nearby cavern.
- Look below the rocks for the hatch.
- Enter Sophie’s Retreat.
- Interact with the Biobed terminal to unlock the Endurance upgrade.
- Scan the “Just Keep Swimming” poster if you want the extra cosmetic scan.
2.6. Nahema’s Lab
Nahema’s Lab is a later Biobed because you need the Heat Tolerance Adaptation before entering the hotter southeast region safely. This bunker gives a Dexterity upgrade, so it is one of the two key locations for expanding your tool slots.
- Unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation before attempting this route.
- Travel southeast from the Lifepod.
- Continue until the temperature rises.
- Look for rock formations and a large coral dome.
- Swim through the opening that leads toward Nahema’s Lab.
- Get inside the bunker and use the Biobed terminal.
- Scan the Power Cell, Power Storage, and Nook recipe datacard while you are there.
2.7. Cicada Wreck Empty Hold
The Cicada Wreck Empty Hold Biobed is one of the later Endurance upgrades. It is not a normal Colonist Bunker, but it still contains a Biobed upgrade in the wreck area. You also need Heat Tolerance for this route, so prepare before heading east.
- Unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation first.
- Travel east from the Lifepod toward the Cicada Wreck.
- Look for the crashed ship / large chassis wreckage.
- Search near the pillar leaning against the wreck.
- Find the opening into the wreck.
- Enter the first hallway, then check the side room for the Biobed.
- Use the terminal to gain the Endurance upgrade.
- Scan the Rebreather and Half Round Room recipe data card if needed.
3. Biobed Upgrade Tips
Biobed hunting is easier when you treat each bunker as a resource and blueprint stop, not just an upgrade point. Many of these locations also contain scannable tools, base pieces, or useful items.
- Interact with the terminal beside the Biobed, not just the bed.
- Scan everything inside each bunker before leaving.
- Bring extra oxygen or air upgrades for deeper routes.
- Carry only essentials so you have room for loot.
- Bring food, water, and a spare battery for longer trips.
- Use blue lightsticks and blackbox objectives as clues for nearby habitats.
- Wait until you have Heat Tolerance before Nahema’s Lab and Cicada Wreck Empty Hold.
- Use a Portable Locker during farming runs if your inventory still fills too quickly.
