Subnautica 2 uses Adaptations as permanent progression upgrades. These are not normal equipment pieces or crafted modules. Instead, they change your character’s biology so you can survive new conditions, interact with alien systems, or continue deeper into the story.
In the current Early Access build, the main Adaptations come from large plant-like structures called Angel Combs. There are currently four known Adaptations in Subnautica 2: Pressure Tolerance, Digestion, Heat Tolerance, and Axum Vision.
1. How Adaptations Work in Subnautica 2
Adaptations are permanent biological upgrades that help you survive and progress in Subnautica 2. They are mainly unlocked by interacting with Angel Combs, which are large organic structures found during the story and exploration routes.
Some Angel Combs are open and can be used immediately. Others are blocked by Bloom Cankers, which are glowing infection growths attached to tendrils around the Angel Comb. To unlock those Adaptations, you need to cleanse the Angel Comb by destroying the Bloom Cankers first.
In Survival Mode, Adaptations must be unlocked through progression. In Creative Mode, Adaptations are available without the same survival restrictions.
2. All Subnautica 2 Adaptations
The current Early Access build has four known Adaptations. Each one changes what your character can survive, eat, or interact with.
| Adaptation | Effect | Location / How to Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure Tolerance | Oxygen does not drain in pressurized air areas. | Prologue, before leaving in the Lifepod. |
| Digestion | Lets you digest local flora and fauna. | 180 m north-northeast of the Lifepod, near the Anita blackbox. |
| Heat Tolerance | Lets you survive hotter areas. | 200 m northwest of the Lifepod, near the Wander blackbox. |
| Axum Vision | Lets you see and interact with Axum technology. | 1,800 m east of the Lifepod, past the Alien Base. |
3. How to Unlock Pressure Tolerance
Pressure Tolerance is the first Adaptation and is tied to the opening story sequence. You do not need to search a biome or craft a tool for this one.
- Start the game normally.
- Progress through the prologue.
- Reach the hab section before escaping in the Lifepod.
- Collect the Pressure Tolerance before leaving.
Pressure Tolerance lets you breathe highly pressurized air. In practical terms, this means your oxygen does not drain in certain non-submerged pressurized spaces.
4. How to Unlock Digestion
Digestion is the first main Angel Comb Adaptation after reaching the ocean. It lets you digest local flora and fauna, making it important for basic survival and food progression.
- Start from the Lifepod.
- Travel around 180 meters north or northeast.
- Look near the Anita blackbox recording route.
- Find the Angel Comb and interact with the pink bulb to receive Digestion.
5. How to Unlock Heat Tolerance
Heat Tolerance is one of the most important Adaptations because it lets you survive hotter areas. You need it before farming heat-zone resources properly, including materials such as Gold and Sulfur.
- Unlock and craft the Sonic Resonator.
- Travel to the corrupted Angel Comb near the Wander blackbox route.
- Follow each large tendril away from the Angel Comb.
- Clear the Bloom Cankers on both tendril routes using the method below, then return to the central Angel Comb chamber.
- Interact with the opened Angel Comb to receive Heat Tolerance.
How to Clear Bloom Cankers
Bloom Cankers are glowing infection nodes attached to corrupted Angel Comb tendrils. You need to destroy them before the Angel Comb opens.
- Equip the Sonic Resonator.
- Follow the large tendrils leading away from the Angel Comb.
- Look for chambers with glowing blue Bloom Cankers.
- Charge and fire the Sonic Resonator at each growth.
- Clear every Bloom Canker in both tendril chambers.
- Return to the central Angel Comb.
6. How to Unlock Axum Vision
Axum Vision is unlocked later, after progressing through the Tadpole Pens and Alien Base route, and it requires the Feedback Resonator to clear shielded Bloom Cankers.
- Progress through the Tadpole Pens objectives.
- Reach the Alien Base / Alien Ruins route.
- Travel far east toward the Angel Comb area.
- Build or use the Tadpole vehicle for the long trip.
- Upgrade the Tadpole with a depth module if needed.
- Find the Axum Vision Angel Comb beyond the Alien Base route.
- Use the Feedback Resonator to destroy the shielded Bloom Cankers.
- Follow the purple pipeline to track all the shielded Bloom Cankers.
- Cleanse the Angel Comb and interact with it to receive Axum Vision.
How to Get the Feedback Resonator
The Feedback Resonator is the upgraded version of the Sonic Resonator. You need it because the later Axum Vision Angel Comb uses shielded Bloom Cankers that close when you approach, making the normal Sonic Resonator ineffective.
| Fragment | Location | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Fragment 1 | Cicada Wreck – Therapy Room | Follow the Singh blackbox signal from the NOA Terminal |
| Fragment 2 | Metal Farms | Search near wreckage in the Metal Farms area, around 2,100 meters east-southeast of the Lifepod |
Feedback Resonator Recipe
Unlike the standard Sonic Resonator, this upgrade can destroy protected growths that block progression toward the Axum Vision Adaptation. You need to craft it at the Modification Station, so gather the required materials before heading toward the far-east Alien Base route.
| Material | Amount |
|---|---|
| Sonic Resonator | 1 |
| Enameled Glass | 2 |
| Conduit Crystal | 2 |
| Strontium |

7. Best Tips Before Cleansing Angel Combs
Cleansing Angel Combs is more dangerous than simply finding the structure. The infected routes can involve low visibility, hostile creatures, oxygen pressure, and multiple Bloom Canker chambers.
- Bring the Sonic Resonator for normal Bloom Cankers.
- Bring the Feedback Resonator for shielded Bloom Cankers.
- Upgrade your oxygen before clearing infected Angel Combs.
- Carry an Air Bladder or other oxygen support for long routes.
- Bring medical kits before entering corrupted chambers.
- Use a distraction flare if a large predator patrols the central chamber.
- Cut Bloom Sap-blocked oxygen funnels with the Survival Multitool.
