The Aerondight Sword in Witcher 3: Blood and Wine is one of the best blades you can obtain in Witcher 3. It is a level 35 sword with a unique charge effect that increases the blade’s damage by 10 percent for consecutive blows. Furthermore, Aerondight Sword’s damage permanently increases by +2 when you kill an enemy with this weapon fully charged. Thus, it’s the most unique weapon in the game that gets stronger through usage.
However, you can’t just purchase the Aerondight Sword from a blacksmith for a heavy price to wield it. You can only obtain this special blade from the Hermit by demonstrating five chivalric virtues across other Blood and Wine quests. This is how you can prove those virtues to get the Aerondight Sword in Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.

Unlock the “There Can Only Be One Quest”
First, you must unlock the “There Can Only Be One” Witcher 3 secondary quest by meeting the Hermit and discovering the virtues for wielding the Aerondight Sword. To do so, head to the Lac Célavy lake, which is directly west of Corvo Branco Vineyard. Walk on the small lake’s water there to speak with the Hermit on the small island.
The Hermit will then reveal the five virtues for wielding Aerondight are inscribed in stones by the lake. Read the stone inscriptions for further details about the virtues. The five virtues you must demonstrate in quests are honor, compassion, wisdom, generosity, and valor. Now you’ve unlocked the quest, proceed with demonstrating the five virtues as covered below.
Give the Messenger a Tip
After completing the “Blood Run” main quest, a messenger boy will run up to Geralt in Beauclair. He’ll give Geralt a letter from Yen or Triss that unlocks the “Turn and Face the Strange” secondary quest in Witcher 3. Then you’ll have a choice to give the messenger a crown tip. Give the messenger five crowns to demonstrate the generosity virtue.
Slay the Slyzards in the “Bovine Blues” Quest
“Bovine Blues” is a level 38 contract quest you can unlock by reading the notice board at the Flovive fishing village. When you’ve unlocked the quest, head to Ardaiso Quarry and speak to Foreman Pafnuzio. Agree to investigate the matter to start the quest. Find and slay the slyzards as required for quest completion to demonstrate valor.
Don’t Fight Hugo’s Brothers in the “Father Knows Worst” Quest
“Father Knows Worst” is a short secondary question you can unlock by reading its contract notice on the notice board in Beauclair’s main square (The Gran’place). Then head to the Albertus Grotto that quest directs you to where you’ll find some brothers running out of a cave. Agree to assist them with finding the third brother (Hugo) in the cave.
When you find Hugo, he thinks his brothers will attack him when he leaves the cave. Select the “No on dies” dialog option to avoid fighting Hugo’s brothers. No fight will happen when Geralt exits the cave with Hugo. This proves Geralt’s wisdom virtue for wielding the Aerondight Sword.
Complete “Big Game Hunter”
You can demonstrate the compassion virtue by completing the “Big Game Hunter” secondary quest. To unlock it, read The White Wolf notice on one of many of the noticeboards throughout Toussaint. Then head to the Chuchote Cave near Ravello Vineyard to meet Beledal and select to help him with his wildlife photography.
When you’ve completed the quest’s primary tasks, select the “New life? Something went wrong before” dialog option to ask Beledal’s men about his daughter. Then select “Sure, why not” when asked about attending Beledal’s exhibition. Go to the exhibition to talk to Beledal again and select, “Your daughter, how she’s doing?” Selecting that dialog option fulfills the compassion virtue for the Aerondight Sword.
Resolve a Marital Spat in “Till Death Do You Part”
The level 36 “Marital Spat – Till Death Do You Part” quest allows Geralt to show honor by telling the truth. You can unlock that quest by reading the notice for it on the noticeboard in Beauclair’s main square. Have a word with Mr. Lanzano at Clever Clogs Tavern in Beauclair, and then head to the nearby cemetery to complete the main tasks of the quest.
It doesn’t matter what side you take within this quest’s marital spat. The most important thing is that you tell Lanzano the truth about what caused it at the end of the quest. Select the “Actually, it was just a marital spat” dialog option to prove Geralt has honor.
Other Quests in Which Geralt Can Prove Virtues
There are numerous other quests beyond those above in which Geralt can prove the necessary virtues for the Aerondight Sword. If you’ve missed your chance in any of the quests above, try completing these alternatives instead:
- “Raging Wolf” (Valor)
- “The Tufo Monster” (Valor or Compassion)
- “The Warble of a Smitten Knight” (Honor)
- “Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite” (Compassion or Honor)
- “Beyond Hill and Dale” (Generosity)
- “To Everything – Turn, Turn, Tournament!” (Wisdom)
- “A Knight’s Tales” (Wisdom)
- “Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away” (Generosity)
Return to and Fight the Hermit to Claim Your Sword
When you’ve shown all the virtues for completing the “There Can Only Be One” quest, return to the Hermit at Lac Célavy. He’ll tell Geralt that he must also prove his combat prowess. Select “Any time” to confirm you’re ready and defeat the Hermit in the fight. The Lady of the Lake will give the Aerondight Sword to Geralt.
Now you can wield the great Aerondight Sword in Witcher 3 so long as you’ve reached the minimum level 35 requirement for equipping the blade. It’s a beautiful silver sword for slaying monsters that glows gold when fully charged.
