8 Ways to Amass Crowns in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The crown is the currency in the Northern Realms of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. You’ll need all the crowns you can get in a world filled with rampaging monsters and bandit mobs. Geralt can’t save Ciri with an empty wallet, can he? This is how you can amass crowns in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Sell, Sell, Sell!

Selling old weapons, armor, junk, food, and drink items is the most obvious way to amass crowns in Witcher 3. Most players probably sell at least some items for the sake of inventory management. However, you need to sell your items to the right people to make the most moolah. These are the best people to sell to:

  • Innkeepers: Food and drink items
  • Librarians: Books
  • Merchants: Junk
  • Herbalists: Alchemy ingredients
  • Blacksmiths: Weaponry and runestones
  • Armorers: Armor and glyphs

You can find plenty of people to sell to at small settlements throughout Velen, White Orchard, and Skellige. However, the best locations to sell at are the cities of Novigrad and Oxenfurt. The people there generally have bigger budgets and offer more crowns for items than folk elsewhere.

Loot Smugglers’ Caches

Smugglers’ caches are floating barrels left in seas and rivers throughout Velen and Skellige. Those caches are stuffed with crowns and other loot you can help yourself to. Small barrel icons highlight caches on the map. You can find most smugglers’ caches in the sea around Ard Skellig in Skellige. The best way to find them is to jump on a boat at one of Skellige’s harbors and go sailing.

Clear out Bandit Camps

Bandits are rotten thieves, and looting their camps in Velen, White Orchard, and Skellige is a great way to amass crowns in Witcher 3: Wild. Those camps include chests you can crack open to grab the booty and clear them. You will find plenty of crowns at the camps, and can also pick up weaponry and armor from the slain bandits. Selling weaponry and armor looted from those camps will considerably boost Geralt’s bank balance.

At least two or three hostile humans guard each bandit camp. So, be prepared for some hack and slash action before clearing them. Always meditate before approaching a camp to ensure you’ve got a full health bar, and you can manually save the game just in case.

Exchange Florens and Orens at Vivaldi Bank

Florens and orens are two different currencies you can pick up in Witcher 3, but the Novigradian crown is the only currency accepted in the Northern Kingdoms. However, you can still exchange florens and orens collected for crowns at Vivaldi Bank. That bank isn’t marked on the map, and finding it for the first time can be like searching for a needle in a haystack in Novigrad. You can find Vivaldi Bank at Novigrad’s Hierarch Square at the location circled below.

Complete Contract Quests

Witcher 3 includes optional contract quests you can complete to earn your crowns. Contract quests are those you can unlock by reading notices on the noticeboards at settlements throughout Northern Realms. The main difference between contract quests and other optional ones is that they have a haggle bar feature with which you can negotiate a price. You can negotiate hundreds of crowns for quest completion with those bars.

Clear Locations in the “Knights for Hire” Quest

“Knights for Hire” is a secondary quest in the Blood and Wine expansion that offers lots of crowns. The Ducal Camerlango needs Geralt’s services to clear out 15 bandit locations throughout Toussaint. You’ll receive 100 crowns (1,500 in total) for every location cleared. Furthermore, you’ll amass even more crowns and pick up bucket loads of other loot when clearing out the locations.

To unlock the “Knights for Hire” quest, head to the Cockatrice Inn (marked on the map below). The noticeboard there includes a note that activates the quest when read. Then you can head to Camerlango’s office in Beauclair to talk business.

Play Gwent

Gwent is Witcher 3’s military card game you can play at inns throughout the Northern Realms. It’s a fun mini-game that can also net you some crowns. You can wager up to 10 crowns on winning a Gwent match. That’s not much, but you can still feasibly amass hundreds of crowns by winning many matches.

You can also scoop 4,500 crowns by playing Gwent in a “High Stakes” quest tournament. To unlock that side quest, read the note for it on the noticeboard near St. Gregory’s Bridge in Novigrad. The quest’s tournament takes place at the Passiflora brothel in Novigrad.

Activate Witcher 3’s Debug Console

This final way to amass crowns in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a cheat code. Witcher 3 has a debug console you can activate, as covered in the guide linked near the top of this page. With that console enabled, you can input an addmoney(#) code that gives you a specified amount of crowns.

For example, let’s say you want to add 100,000 crowns to Geralt’s bank balance with that console. First, you’ll need to open the debug console’s command box by pressing the ~ keyboard key. Enter the addmoney(100000) command, and press your keyboard’s Return button. Then you’ll have 100,000 more crowns after entering that code!
