How Rested Buff and Comfort System Works in Windrose

Build Comfort wrong in Windrose and your stamina will fail you at the worst moment. This guide covers every decoration category, the Bed's hidden bonus, all trophies, and shelter rules.

How Rested Buff and Comfort System Works in Windrose

The Comfort system in Windrose is one of the most impactful mechanics in the game, and one of the least explained. Most players throw a few chairs near their Bonfire and wonder why their Rested buff still expires after ten minutes.

This guide covers how the Rested buff works, how Comfort Level is calculated, every confirmed decoration category, and every Trophy in the current Early Access build.

1. What the Rested Buff Does in Windrose

Rested Buff and Comfort Level 13

Rested Buff and Comfort Level 13

The Rested buff is the single most important passive enhancement in Windrose. It activates when you actively rest near a Bonfire for a few seconds and appears as an icon in the bottom-left of your screen.

Without it, stamina regenerates slowly enough that dodging through a boss fight, sprinting between islands, and climbing cliffsides all turn into a war of attrition. The buff increases your Stamina regeneration rate by approximately 2.5x while active. Every action that drains Stamina benefits from this massive boost:

  • Sprinting between objectives and across islands
  • Dodging attacks in combat
  • Climbing cliffsides and elevated terrain
  • Blocking and parrying incoming hits
  • Heavy attacks and the dash

When the icon drains and disappears, stamina still functions but regenerates at the default rate until you return to a Bonfire and recharge. The Rested buff is not automatic. Logging in does not grant it. Rest at your Bonfire before heading out each session and again when you return.

Duration and the Comfort Formula

Placing furnitures

Placing furnitures

The buff’s duration scales directly with your Comfort Level. Every Comfort point adds exactly one minute on top of the base duration generated by the fire:

  • Base duration: 7 minutes from the Bonfire alone
  • +1 minute per Comfort Level: each additional point extends the buff by one full minute
  • Comfort Level 13: roughly 20 minutes of active Rested buff
  • Maximum Comfort Level (35): up to 42 minutes of Rested buff per session

The goal of everything in this guide is to push that Comfort Level as high as possible, as early as possible.

Ship Comfort

Your Flagship automatically inherits the Rested buff at the same Comfort Level as your highest-rated Bonfire. You do not need to decorate the ship separately for this to work. Boarding your ship carries the full base buff with you across the open sea, so long sailing runs between islands no longer drain your stamina advantage.

Before landing on a boss island or entering a boarding encounter, step aboard for a few seconds to ensure the buff is active and at full duration.

2. How Comfort Level Is Calculated

Comfort Level is a numerical score attached to your Bonfire. Every point of Comfort extends your Rested buff duration by one minute. The score is built from four distinct sources, each with its own stacking rules.

Comfort Source Points Rule
Bonfire +1 Counts once per base. Required anchor for the system.
Bed +1 or +2 Basic Bed gives +1. Bed with Headboard gives +2. Requires Shelter status.
Decoration Categories +1 each One item per category only. Duplicates add nothing. (24 sub-categories exist)
Trophies +1 per unique trophy The only stackable source. Each distinct trophy type adds +1. (7 types exist)

The Category Rule

Comfort is awarded by category, not by quantity. Placing ten chairs earns the exact same +1 Comfort as placing one. The system counts the presence of a category, not how many items from it you own.

Keep these three practical takeaways in mind when building your base:

  • One item covers a category entirely: a single stool and twenty stools produce identical Comfort.
  • Duplicates are wasted resources: a second chair after your first contributes nothing.
  • New categories are the only path forward: every additional +1 Comfort requires a decoration type that has not yet been placed.

3. All Decoration Categories

The Building Panel organizes decorations into 24 subcategories, each contributing +1 Comfort when at least one item from that category is placed within your Bonfire’s radius. Access all categories by pressing B to open the build menu, then navigating to the Decorations tab.

The table below covers all confirmed working categories in the current Early Access build. Additional categories exist and unlock through late-game content, faction progression, and challenge completions.

CategoryComfortNotes
Seating+1Chairs, stools, benches, armchairs. Cheapest first pick at 5 Wood.
Tables+1Round, rectangular, banquet, and writing-desk tables.
Shelves+1Simple to luxurious open decorative shelves.

Chandeliers+1Separate from Lighting. Requires a beam lock at the roof apex before placement.
Canopies+1Decorative fabric canopies for piers and patios.
Dishes+1Iron and wooden tableware. Best placed on a Table.
Food Display+1Separate from Dishes. Displayed food items and food-based decor.
Supplies+1Herb garlands, baskets of peppers, and corn. Requires a recipe book.

Pier Decorations appear as a category in the build menu but are currently bugged in Early Access and grant zero Comfort. Skip this category until a fix is applied.

Fast Path to Comfort 10

Comfort Level 10

Comfort Level 10

For the fastest route to a meaningful early Rested buff, place one item from each of these categories under a proper roof near your Bonfire. All use basic Wood or Plant Fiber with no recipe books required:

  • Bed with Headboard (Beds): grants +2 Comfort, the highest single-item gain in the game
  • Stool (Seating): 5 Wood
  • Simple Table (Tables): 8 Wood
  • Simple Shelf (Shelves): 6 Wood
  • Simple Wardrobe (Wardrobes): 10 Wood, 5 Plant Fiber
  • Wall Torch (Lighting): 5 Wood
  • Dish Set (Dishes): 5 Wood
  • Wine Barrel (Miscellaneous): 8 Wood, 5 Stone

That covers eight categories with the Bed’s +2 bonus plus your Bonfire, pushing past Comfort 10 in under ten minutes of crafting.

4. Placement Rules

Shell Decorations

Shell Decorations

Several placement rules catch players out regularly. Getting any of them wrong means losing Comfort bonuses that appear to be active but are not registering in the background.

Ensure you follow these spatial requirements when decorating your base:

  • Bonfire radius: Decorations must sit inside your Bonfire’s radius to count. The radius is visible in the build menu. Anything outside it contributes nothing.
  • Shelter requirement: Most furniture requires Shelter status (walls and a roof) to grant its Comfort bonus. Outdoor items like canopies and flagpoles are exceptions.
  • Ceiling decorations: Chandeliers and Shell Decorations require a beam lock placed at the roof apex first. Without it, the placement preview stays red.
  • 100% demolish refund: All decorations return 100% of their crafting materials when demolished. Prototype layouts with cheap Wood pieces and upgrade later safely.
  • Shared base rule: Multiple buildings within one Bonfire’s radius share the same Comfort score. One unified decoration room covers the entire base.
  • Enemy settlement bonus: Decorations from nearby enemy pirate settlements can count toward your Comfort Level when you camp close enough to their structures.

5. All Trophies and How to Unlock Them

Trophy Dodo

Trophy Dodo

Trophies are the only Comfort source that stacks without limit per type. Every distinct trophy you mount adds +1 Comfort to the decoration total. With all 7 current trophies mounted and all decoration categories filled, you reach the current maximum Comfort Level of 35.

Unlocking and crafting a trophy follows the same four-step process for every animal:

  1. Complete the Adventure Challenge linked to that animal, tracked in the challenge menu as a kill-count objective.
  2. Once the kill quota is met, the trophy recipe unlocks automatically at your Workbench.
  3. Gather the animal’s head drop plus the required materials. Basic trophies use Wood, while tougher trophies require 5 Hardwood and 4 Nails.
  4. Craft the trophy at the Workbench and mount it on a wall inside your base. The Senkamati Blades trophy must be mounted directly onto a wall structure.

The Crocodile trophy is the only animal that yields two separate trophies, one per challenge tier, contributing +2 total Comfort. Completing the 200-kill Legend of the Swamps challenge also unlocks two additional decorative statue pieces.

Trophy Priority Order

Trophy Boar

Trophy Boar

Work through trophies in this order to build Comfort quickly alongside natural progression:

  • Crab Trophy: Beach crabs on the Coastal Jungle shoreline. Interact with the small orange crabs visible on the beach during the day.
  • Dodo Trophy: Azure Dodos on the starter island. Target only the Azure variant for the head drop. 20 kills takes roughly 15 minutes.
  • Boar Trophy: All Boar variants count toward the 40-kill quota. Earn this passively while exploring the Coastal Jungle.
  • Senkamati Blade Trophy: Tied to the main Foothills story quest chain. Earned organically without dedicated farming.
  • Wolf Trophy: Foothills biome. Focus Alpha Wolves for the higher head drop rate. Bring bleed-resist food before engaging.
  • Great Goat Trophy: High elevation areas in the Foothills. The Goat Leader head is the required drop and is not guaranteed.
  • Crocodile Trophies: Cursed Swamps only. Two distinct trophies and +2 total Comfort. The 200-kill tier is a late-game grind that unlocks extra decor.

6. Refreshing the Buff in the Field

Bonfire

Bonfire

The Rested buff does not need to run out before it can be refreshed. Approaching any Bonfire and standing near it for a few seconds resets the timer to full duration. This works on temporary Bonfires built during exploration, not just the home base.

When the buff drops low during a long island run, a field Bonfire fixes it immediately with no cost if you carry 5 Wood:

  1. Keep 5 Wood in your inventory at all times. This is the full cost of the Bonfire build, which is fully refunded upon demolition.
  2. When the Rested buff drops below 5 minutes, open the build menu and place a temporary Bonfire anywhere outdoors.
  3. Stand near it for a few seconds to refresh the buff.
  4. Demolish the Bonfire to recover all 5 Wood instantly.

A field Bonfire grants only the base 7-minute duration, not the full Comfort Level duration from your decorated home base. Use field Bonfires to plug gaps, not as a replacement for base investment.

7. Recommended Comfort Setup by Stage

Trophies display

Trophies display

Comfort builds in stages alongside biome progression. Each stage introduces new materials, recipe books, and categories that were previously inaccessible. Working through each stage in order avoids both over-investing early and stalling later.

Early Game (Coastal Jungle)

Target Comfort 13+. Build a proper enclosed shelter first, then fill it with cheap Wood-based items. No recipe books are required at this stage:

  • 1x Bed with Headboard (Beds): +2 Comfort, the highest single-item gain
  • 1x Stool (Seating): 5 Wood
  • 1x Simple Table (Tables): 8 Wood
  • 1x Simple Shelf (Shelves): 6 Wood
  • 1x Simple Wardrobe (Wardrobes): 10 Wood, 5 Plant Fiber
  • 1x Wall Torch (Lighting): 5 Wood
  • 1x Dish Set (Dishes): 5 Wood
  • 1x Wine Barrel (Miscellaneous): 8 Wood, 5 Stone
  • 1x Simple Rug (Carpets and Rugs): 10 Plant Fiber
  • Mount Crab, Dodo, and Boar Trophies

Mid Game (Foothills Unlocked)

Target Comfort 20+. Unlock additional categories via recipe books from Traveler’s Camps and pirate loot. Expand into categories inaccessible in the early game:

  • Add 1x Herb Garland or Pepper Basket (Supplies)
  • Add 1x Simple Flag or Flagpole (Banners and Flagpoles)
  • Add 1x Books decoration
  • Add 1x Cannonballs or Military decoration
  • Add 1x Food Display item
  • Add Shell Decorations using Triton’s Horn shells
  • Mount Wolf Trophy and Great Goat Trophy

Late Game (Cursed Swamps)

Target Comfort 35. Complete the Crocodile challenges, the Senkamati quest, and fill the remaining decoration categories, including Chandeliers and Fireplaces:

  • Add 1x Chandelier (requires beam lock at roof apex first)
  • Add 1x Fireplace or chimney structure
  • Fill all remaining unlocked decoration categories through faction vendors
  • Mount Senkamati Blade Trophy
  • Complete the Swamp Hunter challenge for the first Crocodile Trophy
  • Complete Legend of the Swamps for the second Crocodile Trophy

8. Rested Buff Duration Reference

Use this table as a quick reference at any stage of the game. All durations follow the confirmed formula of 7 minutes base plus 1 minute per Comfort Level.

Comfort Level Rested Buff Duration How to Reach It
1 8 minutes Bonfire only
5 12 minutes Bonfire + 4 decoration categories
10 17 minutes Bonfire + Bed + 7 categories
13 20 minutes Bonfire + Bed + 10 categories + 3 Trophies
20 27 minutes Bonfire + Bed + most categories + 5 Trophies
25 32 minutes Full early decoration spread + all 7 Trophies
35 42 minutes All categories + all Trophies (current maximum)

Five rules govern the Comfort system at every stage of the game:

  • Category breadth beats quantity: covering every available category always outperforms stacking items from one.
  • The Bed with Headboard is unique: it gives +2 Comfort, the highest single-item gain available.
  • Shelter is required for indoor furniture: walls and a roof must be in place before indoor decorations can provide any Comfort.
  • Trophies are the only stackable source: every unique trophy type adds +1 above the decoration ceiling.
  • Carry 5 Wood at all times: a field Bonfire built anywhere refreshes the base 7-minute buff on demand.
