Armor progression in Windrose is cleaner than it first looks. You start with basic starter pieces, move into craftable early armor, and then build toward the named Rare armor sets that define most mid-to-late game builds. The Armor sets include five pieces: head, chest, gloves, pants, and boots.
1. How Armor Progression Works
Most armor is crafted in the Armor and Clothing Workshop. Recipe unlocks come from exploring points of interest and from vendor exchanges in Tortuga, while level upgrades use stronger materials and tools once your crafting chain improves.
Armor Progression Loop
- Replace the Torn gear with Survivor pieces as soon as you can
- Unlock named armor recipes through POIs and Tortuga vendor exchanges
- Aim for Pikeman 2-piece or Conquistador 2-piece first
- Move into Privateer if you want the strongest overall long-term set
- Use Tracker if you want safer solo survivability.
2. How to Get Armor in Windrose
You get armor in Windrose mainly by crafting it at the Armor and Clothing Workshop, then expanding into better set pieces by unlocking recipes through exploration and buying armor plans from faction vendors. After the starting gear, move to Tortuga and begin checking its vendors.
The clearest way to get stronger armor plans is through faction reputation. Reputation goes up by handing in Insignias from enemy and ship kills, plus Letters of Favour from faction quests.
2.1. How to Unlock All Rare Armor Sets
These armor sets are unlocked by increasing faction reputation and purchasing them from faction vendors:
- Conquistador Set — bought from the Smugglers of Port Royal Provisioner at Reputation Level 2.
- Pikeman Set — bought from the Smugglers of Port Royal Provisioner at Reputation Level 2.
- Flibustier Set — bought from the Rogue Buccaneers Provisioner at Reputation Level 2.
- Tracker Set — bought from the Rogue Buccaneers Provisioner at Reputation Level 2.
- Marksman Set — bought from the People of Tortuga Provisioner at Reputation Level 2.
- Privateer Set — bought from the People of Tortuga Provisioner at Reputation Level 2.

4. Best Rare Armor Sets
There are six rare armor sets: Conquistador, Flibustier, Marksman, Pikeman, Privateer, and Tracker. These are the sets that matter most once you move beyond starter survivability and begin building around bonuses.
4.1. How to Craft Conquistador Armor Set
The Conquistador Set is the tank-focused set. It is a survivability-heavy line with a 15% damage resistance 2-piece bonus and a Bulwark 4-piece effect that prevents your actions from being interrupted by the first few hits you take.

|---|---|---|
| Conquistador’s Helmet | 2 Copper Ingot, 2 Coarse Fabric | 3 Foothills Iron Ingot, 2 Linen Fabric, 1 Smithing Flux |

4.3. How to Craft Marksman Set
The Marksman Set is the ranged-focused armor set. It is built for firearm-heavy play and makes the most sense on builds that want their damage to come primarily from pistols or muskets rather than melee pressure.
| Armor Piece | Lvl 1 Recipe | Lvl 2 Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Marksman’s Tricorne | 5 Coarse Fabric, 2 Rough Hide | 5 Linen Fabric, 2 Tanned Leather, 1 Sewing Tools |

4.4. How to Craft Pikeman Set
The Pikeman Set is one of the most recommended early-to-mid game survivability sets. The 2-piece Pikeman bonus for the early-to-mid game is great because it gives a large flat HP boost.

|---|---|---|
| Pikeman’s Boots | 2 Copper Ingot, 2 Coarse Fabric | 2 Foothills Iron Ingot, 2 Linen Fabric, 1 Smithing Flux |

| Pikeman’s Pants | 3 Copper Ingot, 2 Coarse Fabric | 3 Foothills Iron Ingot, 2 Linen Fabric, 1 Smithing Flux |
4.5. How to Craft Privateer Set
The Privateer Set is widely treated as the best overall armor set in Windrose right now. It gives excellent overall value and fits more builds because of Critical Hit bonuses cleanly than the other sets, which is why it consistently ranks at the top of current armor tier lists.

|---|---|---|
| Privateer’s Tricorne | 5 Coarse Fabric, 2 Rough Hide | 5 Linen Fabric, 2 Tanned Leather, 1 Sewing Tools |

The Tracker Set is one of the most recommended solo-play sets because it provides a strong healing effectiveness bonus.

| Tracker’s Hat | 3 Rough Hide, 2 Coarse Fabric | 3 Tanned Leather, 2 Linen Fabric, 1 Master’s Tools |

4.7. How to Get Standalone Epic Armor
Ancient Peoples’ Mask is a standalone headpiece rather than a normal five-piece set entry. It is an Epic, Head, and C-Tier, with 300 Base Defense and 420 Max Upgrade Defense. You can get this as a rare spawn in Ancient Ruins or Ancient Fire Sanctuary.
