9. How to Use Spells, Summons, and Debuffs Effectively
Magic in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is powerful, but also resource-limited. This section explains how to properly use spells, summons, and debuffs like bleed and freeze to control fights and maximize damage.
Spellcasting Basics
- Spells are equipped in either hand like weapons
- Tap to cast instantly or hold to charge for more power
- Each cast costs mana; careful resource management is critical, although your mana will regenerate
- Magic damage scales with your Spirituality stat
Using Summons and Soul Salvage
- Summons draw enemy attention and deal damage
- How to unsummon? Use Soul Salvage to sacrifice a summon and heal yourself or refill mana quicker. You must aim the summon with a light or heavy cast to successfully unsummon your ally.
- Best early combo: Wolf Summon + Soul Salvage (found in Miner’s Tunnel)
- Summons are great for tanking, pulling, and regen breaks
- The best summon spell is Wolf’s Call because all other summons are slow, buggy, or do not deal enough damage
- Summon Keeper spell is usable if you want to snipe other ranged enemies. It can deal a massive amount of damage.
Summoner Build Summary – Known Bugs and Issues
Playing as a Summoner in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon currently feels unpolished and bug-ridden. The archetype suffers from numerous issues that make the experience frustrating or outright broken:
-
Summons often bug out after fast travel – becoming invisible or non-responsive.
-
They randomly aggro friendly NPCs, sometimes causing guards to react.
-
Resting in towns or loading a save can bug out the extra summon perk, killing part of your army.
-
Summons refuse to attack bosses who transition from friendly to hostile during cutscenes – a major flaw.
-
AI behavior is inconsistent: Keeper is nearly useless, slow, and inaccurate; Wolves are the only reliable summons due to their aggression.
-
Summons die easily despite investing heavily in the Summoner tree. Even basic enemies can one-shot them.
-
Pathfinding is a major problem, with summons blocking narrow paths or getting in your way during melee.
Until the devs overhaul summoning and fix key bugs, this playstyle is not viable for serious progression.
Bleed Debuff – Stackable Damage Over Time
- Bleed stacks infinitely as long as you keep attacking
- Ideal for long fights or tanky enemies
- Works especially well with fast-hit weapons or dual-wielding, as well as arrows, to a lesser degree
Freeze Debuff – Crowd Control and Burst Damage
- Freezes an enemy in place temporarily
- Breaking a frozen enemy deals bonus damage
- Excellent for interrupting strong attacks or controlling large groups
Magic Build Tips
- Invest heavily in Spirituality for better spell damage and mana regen
- Carry a backup melee or bow in case you run out of mana
- Use campfires to cook food that boosts mana regeneration before combat
Pro Tip: Slot Spells in Both Hands
You can equip different spells in each hand — for example, a damage spell in your right and a summon or utility spell in your left. You can even use a spell in one hand and a melee weapon in the other for hybrid playstyles.
