6. How to Master Combat: Dashing, Blocking, and Parrying
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon features a reactive, stamina-based combat system. Mastering dashing, blocking, and parrying is essential for surviving multiple enemies and bosses. This section explains each mechanic and when to use them.
Dashing – Fast Repositioning and Avoidance
Dashing lets you quickly evade incoming attacks by consuming stamina. It’s directly influenced by your armor weight and movement tier:
- Light Armor: Fast dash recovery, 120% movement speed
- Medium Armor: Balanced stamina use, 100% speed
- Heavy Armor: Slower dash, 90% movement speed
Time your dash carefully to reposition out of danger without running out of stamina mid-combat.
Blocking – Partial Damage Reduction
Blocking reduces incoming damage based on your shield strength and Endurance. While safer than parrying, blocking still drains stamina and you can still suffer reduced damage, and letting it deplete leaves you vulnerable to full damage. Stamina does not replenish while actively blocking.
Best used when:
- You’re equipped with a shield and heavy armor
- You can’t risk a dash or parry
- You’re managing a long combo from a boss
Parrying – High Risk, High Reward
Parrying is done by tapping right-click just before an enemy attack lands. When timed correctly, it:
- Negates 100% of the attack damage
- Staggers the enemy, giving you a counter opportunity
Missing the parry window will either leave you open for the hit or it may register as a block, costing you stamina and a reduced amount of damage taken. Get used to how enemies choreograph attacks to master parrying.
Combat Skill Leveling Tips
- Use dashing, blocking, and parrying often to level their respective skills
- Train safely on the combat dummy in the fort for melee and ranged XP
- Higher skill levels increase effectiveness and grant passive experience gain
Pro Tip: Build Around Your Defense Style
- Dash-focused: Combine Dexterity with light armor for fast stamina regen and quick repositioning. Use cooked food to enhance regeneration.
- Block-focused: Invest in Endurance, shields, and stamina regeneration
- Parry-focused: Mix Dexterity and Strength with precise timing-based skills
