20 Minutes of Final Fantasy XVI Gameplay to Be Shown in Thursday’s State of Play

Sony’s PlayStation State of Play returns this Thursday (April 13), boasting “more than 20 minutes” of new Final Fantasy XVI footage. The footage will focus on the new battle system, as well as flesh out more of the game’s story and world. There is no news as to whether any other titles will be shown off during the broadcast.

20 Minutes of Final Fantasy XVI Gameplay to Be Shown in Thursday’s State of PlayIn typical fashion, Sony has announced its latest PlayStation State of Play via a Blog post a mere couple of days before it is set to go live. The upcoming and highly anticipated action-RPG Final Fantasy XVI is the focus of this latest broadcast, and fans only need wait till this Thursday (April 13) to view “more than 20 minutes” of brand-new gameplay and footage of the game in action. Tune in to Twitch or YouTube April 13 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 11pm CEST to watch the announcements live.

Final Fantasy XVI is the latest in the long line of critically acclaimed JRPGs from Square Enix, and like those titles, is set in an entirely new, fantastical realm, teaming with magic and monsters. While Square Enix has offered some insight into FFXVI’s new world, characters, and lore in the past, this Thursday’s footage is set to dive even deeper, as well as give players an extended look at the title’s revamped, more action-oriented combat.

From the PS Blog: “From the moment Final Fantasy XVI debuted in our 2020 PlayStation 5 Showcase, fans around the world have eagerly awaited details on the game’s dark fantasy setting, the powerful Eikons and the Dominants who house them, and the flashy battle system teased in those early trailers.”

As to whether anything else will be shown off during the upcoming State of Play, Sony has kept quiet. However, if previous broadcasts are anything to go by, fans can expect to settle in for a forty-minute presentation, with the first half dedicated to quick peeks at upcoming projects and the second half purely dedicated to Final Fantasy XVI. Those first announcements are typically trailer-heavy and focus on brand-new or recently announced indie titles. However, with Sony’s latest push into VR, fans could expect to see a handful of new PSVR2 titles in the mix.

Final Fantasy XVI is set to launch on PS5 on June 22, 2023.
