Final Fantasy 16 Trailer Reveals New Characters, Lore, and Gameplay

Square Enix shared another trailer for Final Fantasy 16 today. This time, we got to see a deeper glimpse into the world of Valisthea. The trailer introduced us to the five kingdoms of the world, some new characters, and gave us a quick snippet of battle gameplay.

In a recent video titled “Ambition”, Square Enix revealed the latest Final Fantasy 16 trailer. The video features a voice over narration revealing many key details about the world and lore of Final Fantasy 16. These include things such as new characters, an introduction to the five kingdoms, and a glimpse into the lore of Valisthea. 

Final Fantasy 16 takes place in the world of Valisthea. This is a world is speckled with Mothercrystals--mountainous crystals known to bless the lives of those around them and grant them with the power to use magicks. Over time, great powers have built up around these crystals. And while these powers have coexisted peacefully for a long time, tensions rise as the spread of Blight threatens their kingdoms. 

The trailer gives us a look into Final Fantasy 16′s five kingdoms, as well as a look into the Dominants who inhabit these lands.

The kingdoms introduced are as follows:

  • Rosaria, the “bastion of tradition”
  • Sanbreque, “where ambition is divine”
  • Dhalmekian Republic, whose “fortunes shift with the desert’s sands”
  • The Iron Kingdom, “forged in faith and fear”
  • Waloed, “indomitable in its isolation”

The trailer also introduces two new characters to us--Dion Lesage and Barnabus Tharmr. 

Dion is the crown prince of Sanbreque. He is the leader of the dragoons and is well respected by his people and his troops. Dion is the Dominant of Sanbreque, taking the battlefield with the Eikon Bahamut. 

Barnabus is a master of the sword. He won over his people with his skill after arriving homeless and titleless on the shores of Ash. Wielding his iconic black blade, he rides into battle commanding the Eikon Odin as the Dominant of Waloed. 

Final Fantasy 16 has no official release date yet, but PlayStation says, “With regards to development, the team has turned the corner and entered the home stretch, and is currently concentrating its efforts on debugging, tweaking, polishing, and optimization.”

As of right now, the game is set to release in the summer of 2023.
