I hate to admit it, but it’s been a rather slow year in terms of fantasy games released in 2022. I haven’t felt totally enveloped in a fantasy game this year other than say Shin Megami Tensei V. Yes I know Elden Ring came out in February, but I like to stick those “souls” types game into a completely different genre, which I call: “Oh my god! Why is this game so hard?!” So I’ll just keep Elden Ring out of this article for the time being. Plus, shouldn’t fantasy games be a bit more relaxing and chill, instead of having your heart rate at a constant 150bpm? Listed here are the top 10 fantasy games to be excited about, allowing you to quench that magical thirst of yours.
Sea of Stars – PS5/PS4/Switch/PC/Xbox
Right off the bat, I need to mention that this game was supposed to be released in December of 2022, but was recently pushed back to 2023. As hard as it is to cope with that unfortunate news, we should all respect their decision as it’s probably for the best. This game looks incredible, so they should take all the time they need. It has a familiar look of Chrono Trigger mixed with modern gameplay elements, like unique spell casting and slick combat combos one can pull off. There’s also a unique cooperative aspect to it. Check out the trailer below:
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero – Switch/PS4/PC
Originally a PSP game, The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is getting an enhanced release for modern consoles and PC. Ratings and reviews for this game were always extremely high, saying it was by far the best Trails game available. It will be released on September 27, 2022.

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness – Switch/PS5/PC
A dark game based on a dark anime. If you know anything about the anime, you would understand why Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is rated 18+. It is getting a 2022 release on September 2.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – PC/MAC & Consoles TBD
Baldur’s Gate 3 is still currently in its beta stage, allowing it to be part of this list. It is easily one of the most anticipated upcoming fantasy games that gamers are excited to get their hands on. Those of us lucky enough to dabble in the beautiful world of Baldur’s Gate 3, have been able to experience the addicting components it possesses. For instance, its amazingly fresh Divinity: Original Sin type combat system, unique characters and riveting story line.
With team Larian behind this future masterpiece, it’s bound to be as epic as Divinity: Original Sin 2. Having played the beta so far, it possesses all of the magic you are starving for. New spells and cantrips enter the world of Baldur’s Gate, as well as some classic ones. (Obviously Magic Missile is there, do I even need to mention that?) .They plan on releasing the final game sometime in 2023.

Harvestella – PC/Switch
Recently announced for the Switch, Harvestella has created somewhat of a new game genre for its upcoming title. It blends together a combination of farming, life simulator, adventuring and magic casting rolled into one fantastic looking RPG. Think Final Fantasy meets Stardew Valley with a hint of the Atelier Series. It will be released on November 4th, 2022.

Lost Soul Aside – PS5
Developed by a small company, with support from Sony, this gorgeous game takes notes from Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy XV. Lost Soul Aside is a game rarely talked about, as it doesn’t have the financial support to generate much anticipation and hype. Lost Soul Aside is an action RPG, meshing cool spell casting with fast paced sword fighting. This hidden gem is going to be a force to be reckoned with in late 2022, that we can’t wait to get our hands on. So far, it will be exclusively on PS5.

Valkyrie Elysium – PS5
Recently announced by Playstation, Valkyrie Elysium is the newest game in the Valkyrie Profile series. With an updated, real-time action battle system, Valkyrie Elysium decides to move in the same direction as the Final Fantasy series. This highly anticipated new entry to the Valkyrie series will be released on September 29, 2022, for Playstation and Steam.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force – PS5/Xbox/PC
At last, Star Ocean fans get a brand new game coming to PC and consoles on October 27th. Gameplay looks similar to the previous games except, you know, having the ability to FLY. And the combat looks absolutely stunning.
Harry Potter – Hogwarts Legacy: PS5/Switch/Xbox
Where do I start with this one? This game has created so much excitement thus far, as Harry Potter fans have been craving a game like this ever since they read the first chapter of the Philosopher’s Stone. (I’d say the previous Harry Potter games have been rather underwhelming to say the least). Its been everyone’s dream to one day enroll in Hogwarts, get sorted by that ruffled leather hat, participate in quidditch, and of course, cast some mind-blowing spells!
If you were lucky enough to get your hands on a PS5, the developers have released some juicy news about the haptic feedback experience using PS5 controllers. The controller will allow users to get a different experience for each individual spell they cast, ultimately creating a more immersive magical experience. We just pray that this game turns out as good as it looks. Hogwarts Legacy will be released for consoles in December of 2022.

Final Fantasy XVI – PS5
The newest Final Fantasy entry is said to go back to its roots. No more flying cars and futuristic cities. (Which I think is a great step forward, going backwards in time). After a long drought of news from the Final Fantasy XVI front, they gave gamers a taste of some juicy gameplay footage. Summons, spell casting and a brand-new combat system makes this one of the most anticipated fantasy games in the near future.
Though, some gamers are dissatisfied with the action-RPG style gaining more momentum, instead of the classic turn based system of old Final Fantasy games. But seriously, how can you not get goosebumps watching this trailer? I dare to say it, but I think this will be the biggest RPG in the last decade. It will be releasing in the Summer 2023.
