ifrit is a massive fire beast responsible for a lot of destruction in Final Fantasy XVI. This beast originated as a Summon in Final Fantasy 3, and has appeared in nearly every mainline installment since. FF16 doesn’t use Ifrit or other Summons from older games the same way as the series used to. Instead, Final Fantasy 16‘s major cast can transform into these powerful giant monsters known as Eikons. You’ll team up with a few different Eikons throughout the story. Most notably; Shiva and Ramuh. Most others such as Bahamut, Odin, and even Clive Rosfield’s own Ifrit act as major bosses. Ifrit is the second Eikon of fire that players encounter in the storyline.
Ifrit is fought on three separate occasions throughout FFXVI, The first is in the game’s intro, the second just before the first major time skip, and the last partway through the story. The first two fights are semi-automatic, while the final is a full length boss fight that contains multiple phases. The biggest rewards for taking down this mighty beast include a new transformation and the ability to progress the main storylines further.
Here is everything you need to know about fighting Ifrit in Final Fantasy 16.

Pre-Time Skip Fights
Both of the pre-time skip fights involve playing as Phoenix, and they take place so early in the prologue that the demo covers both versions of the fight. The true fight against Ifrit6 is, however, only in the full game. These fights take place on a set path that both the player and foe move along. The only actions you can do during these segments are shooting fire and dodging. Keep the cursor aimed at Ifrit as you shoot. Ifrit will charge up before launching itself at you. The second iteration of this fight adds extra segments. The most difficult part is knocking Ifrit out near the end before it can use its ultimate attack, however, the game is somewhat forgiving if you fail. You’ll only need to repeat part of the fight, and it should be easier to win the second time. Just make sure to keep the cursor over the opposing fire Eikon as much as possible while shooting.
Buried Memories Main Quest
Ifrit is the second Eikon boss fight after the time skip. Players will first have to defeat Garuda, and get an opportunity to control Ifrit in the process. Clive and Jill will then travel to the site where Ifrit and Phoenix fought before the time skip. A new dungeon becomes available in this area. Remember to stock up on Potions and High Potions before entering. You may also want to enhance your weapons at the hideaway’s blacksmith and do side quests first if you’re feeling under-leveled. Reaching the end of this dungeon will result in another encounter with Ifrit, the being Clive thinks is the root of the problem. Players will receive a few PlayStation trophies for completing this main questline.
Phoenix Gate Dungeon Common Enemy Tips
- This secret passage contains many new types of common enemies; Fallen Bug, Fallen Hunter, and Defense Node. The latter can shoot projectiles, so it’d be wise to take it out first.
- Fallen Guardian is a large enemy with more health and attack power. Be careful of its large beam attacks. Deadly Embrace’s staggering effect works on this opponent.
- The iconic Bomb enemy from many past Final Fantasy games returns. Be careful of its ability to self-destruct.
Iron Giant Mini-Boss Tips
- This foe may be large, but it is not slow. Prepare to dodge fast sword swings.
- Dodge backwards or jump high into the air if it raises one of its legs. Iron Giant has the ability to produce lightning from its leg as it stomps the ground. Unlocking multi-jumps can make dodging this move easier.
- Use Deadly Embrace once its Will Gauge falls below half to partially stagger it. Draining its entire Will Gauge will fully stagger it.
- Attack Iron Giant with as many Eikonic abilities as possible while it is charging Atomic Ray. This move will deal devastating damage if you don’t stop it in time. The purple meter below its health bar signifies the amount of time you have.
- Iron Giant.
- Electric stomp.
- Iron Giant charging a powerful attack.
- Flaming sword.
Lich Chamber Tips
- Despite this foe not being marked as a mini-boss, it can be just as challenging as Iron Giant due to its large amount of HP and move set.
- Be wary of the Lich’s ability to teleport. Lock onto the foe again if need be.
- It’s likely to fire a projectile from its scythe if you stand too far away.
- You will need to activate two switches in nearby rooms to proceed after fighting this opponent.
Ifrit Post-Time Skip Fight
Clive’s ultimate test of self acceptance awaits at the end of the dungeon. Clive will half to overcome the Infernal Eikon and Infernal Shadow. Both of them are dark variations of Clive and Ifrit, and this fight takes place within the madness of Clive’s mind. There’s technically five phases to this fight, but the last two are almost guaranteed victories for the player. A new transformation will become available during the latter half of the fight.
Boss Phase 1: Infernal Eikon Tips
- Remember to use magic often throughout this fight. Magic does deal less damage, but Ifrit likes to charge to the opposite side of the arena which can make using melee attacks hard.
- Dodge to the side while Ifrit is using Crimson Rush. It’s a dash attack that leaves a trail of flames behind itself.
- Vulcan Burst is an attack where Ifrit can ignite the ground near its feat. Run or dodge backwards when the ground near its feat begins to glow.
- Ifrit also likes to throw multiple fireballs into the air. These will land around the player. Try dodging last second for a greater chance of not taking damage.
- Staggering this foe is important since it’ll give you a chance to use all your strong melee attacks.
Boss Phase 2: Infernal Shadow Tips
- Clive’s counterpart has many of the same sword attacks that he does.
- Precise dodge to get an attack opening. Chain combos of your best abilities together when you get an opportunity.
- Infernal Shadow’s ranged magic attack is always Fira, and it doesn’t need as much charging time as Clive’s Fira spell usually does.
- This boss also has a rush-down attack called Molten Rush. Infernal Shadow’s sword will gain a flaming aura before he uses this attack.
Boss Phase 3: Awakened Infernal Shadow Tips
- Infernal Shadow will activate a powered up state in which it deals more damage and learns new attacks.
- He can now shoot multiple fire-based projectiles at the same time.
- Hammer and Anvil is a move where he’ll try jumping into the air before swinging back down towards your direction.
- Incinerate is a move where he’ll make the ground in front of him explode.
- Be especially careful of the move called Hellfire. Fire will begin to burst from random areas all around the arena. You’ll have just a moment to dodge out of the way.
Boss Phases 4: Accepting The Truth Transformation
A cutscene will play after knocking the Infernal Shadow down to half health. Clive comes to terms with the fact that he is Ifrit, and that he was the one who killed his brother (whom he is unaware is actually alive). Press in both the left and right joysticks when the prompt comes up to activate a new ability. This form lasts infinitely during this fight, but becomes just a temporary power up once this fight concludes. The new meter under your health is an indicator for how long this form lasts. This bar is known as the Limit Break Gauge. This awakened form makes it nearly impossible to lose this specific fight since you’ll be healed while attacking your opponent. Still, it’d be wise to use evasion when necessary. Infernal Shadow will have all the same attacks it had prior, so just fight him like you did in the previous phase.
Boss Phase 5: Ifrit VS Ifrit and Aftermath
Both the god and evil Clives will turn into Ifrit. This Eikonic clash only requires some quick time events to succeed. Just mash the square button when the prompt comes up to deal damage. This kaiju battle will be over within a minute. You’ll be rewarded with ability points, gil, a fire shard, and magicked ash. Ifrit’s Dominant finally accepts himself. Clive, Jill, and Torgal will return to the surface after the fight to discuss where to go next. You’ll also see Joshua lurking nearby, but what his goal is remains unclear. The setting will then transition to Hugo the Dominant of Titan. He receives Benedikta’s remains, and swears to seek vengeance on Cid and those who side with him. You will have a few brief battles before heading back to the hideaway, but these should be relatively easy.
