Endgame weapons are a staple of the Final Fantasy series and Final Fantasy XVI is no different. While you may only be able to outfit Clive with weaponry, you can still grind your way to some ultimate god-slaying weapons that will make your journey through the later stages of Final Fantasy 16 much easier. Over-levelling for the final boss is a tradition in JRPGs, after all, and many players will want to chase the strongest weapon in all of Valisthea before they go into the endgame. Well, as luck would have it, FF16 has a clear winner in that regard with a name just as epic as its power: Gotterdammerung.
Gotterdammerung is the best weapon in Final Fantasy XVI by a mile, outclassing every other weapon Clive could possibly wield. As you can likely expect, getting your hands on it isn’t going to be as simple as beating up a Morbol and calling it a day. To make Gotterdammerung, you’ll need to do several things and take down a fair few powerful Marks. If you’re up for the challenge, we’re here to guide you to your reward.
Here’s how to unlock and craft the best weapon in Final Fantasy 16, Gotterdammerung.

What is Gotterdammerung in Final Fantasy 16?
Gotterdammerung is the best and strongest weapon in Final Fantasy XVI (not counting the Ultima Weapon from Final Fantasy Mode, of course). This is an exceptionally rare sword whose name translates to the “twilight of the gods” and it was forged from the bones of the legendary weapon Ragnarok. As per the weapon’s description, “If Ragnarok was made to mark the war of the gods, then Gotterdammerung was forged to mark the fall of those selfsame deities.”
It has far and away the best stats in the entire game, with 375 Attack and 375 Stagger. The next best sword, Defender, only has 340 Attack and Stagger (and that’s even after being reinforced to Defender +2) making Gotterdammerung an even bigger upgrade to Clive’s offensive potential. With this world-ending sword in your possession, you can readily take on the worst of what Final Fantasy 16 has to offer, be that the end of the world or the endgame bosses you’ll fight.
So, now that you know what Gotterdammerung is and how powerful this weapon it is, how do you get it in FF16? Well, it involves a pretty long questline and you’ll need to gather some rare resources, too.
How to Unlock the Gotterdammerung Crafting Recipe
Before you can begin making a start on Gotterdammerung, you first need to unlock the weapon’s crafting recipe.
The recipe for Gotterdammerung is unlocked by completing the final quest in Blackthorne’s chain of sidequests, Blacksmith’s Blues 4. As the name suggests, this is the fourth quest involving the Hideaway’s resident blacksmith, Blackthorne, and will span a large portion of the game.
The first quest in the chain, simply titled Blacksmith’s Blues, is given to you by August not long after you fell the first Mother Crystal and established the next Hideaway. You can get it from August in the Mess section of the Hideaway and it will be denoted as a particular sidequest, where the symbol is a plus sign (+) as opposed to the typical examination mark (!).
Completing this quest will start you on the chain. The next steps in the quest will become available at different intervals:
- Blacksmith’s Blues 2 will be available after Drake’s Fang in Dhalmekia. You must read a missive in your room penned by August to get the quest.
- Blacksmith’s Blues 3 will be available after the events at Twinside. Like earlier, August will have the quest for you in the Mess.
Finally, after beating Blacksmith’s Blues 3, August will have one final quest for you after you return from your first journey to Ash. This is the last quest in the chain and involves aiding Blackthorne’s old home, Dravozd, from falling to Akashic hoards. Complete this quest and you’ll receive the weapon Ragnarok, a powerful weapon late into the endgame. You’ll also be given the Gotterdammerung crafting recipe, allowing you to begin hunting for the pieces you need to make it.
How to Craft Gotterdammerung in Final Fantasy XVI
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer actually to make the thing. Not only does it require several endgame materials that came from tough Notorious Mark Hunts, but some of the materials won’t appear until very late in the game.
Specifically, you’ll have to reach the mission Back to Their Origin for everything you need to become available. You may also have to complete several sidequests around Valisthea to cause certain monsters and Hunts to appear, so keep that in mind if you can’t find where to go.
To forge Gotterdammerung in Final Fantasy XVI, you’ll need to get the following materials:
- Ragnarok
- Orichalcum x3
- Darksteel x2
- Primitive Battlehorn x1
Orichalcum
Fans of Final Fantasy will be no strangers to Orichalcum, a rare endgame material used to upgrade many weapons into their best forms. The same is true in Final Fantasy XVI where Orichalcum is used to craft the very best weapons and equipment in the entire game.
Sources of Orichalcum are limited, though. You’ll earn Orichalcum through the following means, where completion of each activity awards exactly 1 Orichalcum:
- S Rank Hunt: Svarog
- S Rank Hunt: Atlas
- S Rank Hunt: Gorgimera
- S Rank Hunt: Behemoth King
- Under New Management 2 (Conclusion to the Dame’s questline)
- Duty Undying 2 (Conclusion to the Undying questline)
In total, you need 3 Orichalcum to forge Gotterdammerung. The easiest way to obtain the 3 Orichalum you need is to complete the Atlas and Gorgimera Hunts, as these become available much earlier than some other options, and then complete Under New Managment 2 to end the Dame’s questline. This will net you 3 Orichalcum which you can use to make Gotterdmarung (should you also have the other materials, of course).
Alternatively, the other option is to use these easier sources of Orichalcum to craft stronger equipment. Specifically, the Ouroborous equipment you unlock from Blacksmith’s Blues 3, as they also require Orichalcum to create. This will obviously mean you’ll have to wait longer to craft Gotterdammerung but it will mean that you’re better protected and ready for the harder hunts and bosses, namely Svarog the Dragon and the Behemoth King.
Darksteel
The next material you need is Darksteel. This material is said to be extremely similar to iron, yet darker, harder and heavier. In Final Fantasy XVI, there are two specific Hunts you must undertake to obtain Darksteel:
- A Rank Hunt: Thanatos | Found in Titan’s Wake, Dhalmekia, after completing the main scenario quest The Last King.
- A Rank Hunt: Prince of Death | Found in Cape Orsiere, Sanbreque, after completing the main scenario quest Streets of Madness.
Both of these monsters belong to Ultima’s ranks and they’re tougher versions of an Undertaker and Lich, respectively. You will need to defeat both Thanatos and the Prince of Death as Gotterdammerung requires 2 pieces of Darksteel to be forged.
- Darksteel Ingredient
- Darksteel Hunts
Primitive Battlehorn
Lastly, we have the Primitive Battlehorn. This item also comes from a Hunt, but one very unlike the other ones you’ll have faced to get here.
The Notorious Mark holding onto the Primitive Battlehorn is called Gobermouch, a Goblin who has somehow stumbled their way over to the lands of Ash. You’ll find them in the town of Eistla after completing the main scenario quest The Last King. The fight itself is pretty interesting, as Gobermouch will use moves more like a Gigas that a typical Goblin.
Beat Gobermouch and the Primitive Battlehorn will be yours.
- Primitive Battlehorn
- Gobermouch Hunt
With all the pieces you need in your possession, return to Blackthorne in the Hideaway. Now, you can create the ultimate god-killing weapon Gotterdammerung. That was how to unlock and craft the best weapon in Final Fantasy XVI, Gotterdammerung.
