The Greatwood is a large forest region in Final Fantasy XVI. Wildlife thrives in this area, but in recent times the Blight has caused beasts to start destroying the ecosystem. This makes it extremely dangerous for most ordinary travelers/ Luckily, Clive and his party are no mere adventurers. Clive and Cid decide to set out from their hideaway in hopes of finding Ifrit’s Dominant. Ifrit is the second Dominant of fire that appeared earlier in the storyline.
The duo are accompanied by Jill’s noble dog, Torgal. This mission acts as a tutorial for commanding Torgal, while also progressing the party closer to their next destination. Many foes such as wild wolves named Worgen, Fafnir of the North, and Midnight Raven will block the crew’s path during this Fanning Embers main story quest.
Here’s a walkthrough of everything you need to know about FF16′s Fanning Embers quest.

Preparations
Make sure to buy new weapons, potions, and other necessities with your Gil while in the hideout. You can also try training at the Arete Stone if you want to hone your skills for the upcoming boss battles. The training arena offers many great options to help you improve, so it can be very helpful for beginners. Additionally, there are two new side quests that are very easy to complete in the HQ. Head to the world map via the hideout’s gate once you’re fully prepared.
Food for Thought Side Quest
Kenneth is the head kitchen chef at a restaurant called Fat Chocobo. Speak to him to trigger this side quest which involves delivering food to three nearby NPCs. All of them are within the Fat Chocobo, so this quest can be completed in mere seconds. Finishing this quest will allow you to obtain the Badge of mettle. It’s a piece of equipment that increases the user’s defense by 10. This can be extremely useful for the fights ahead.
Make Do and Mend Side Quest
Speaking to Geoffrey the carpenter will activate this quest. All you need to do to complete it is talk to a pair of NPCs near the blacksmith. There will be a side quest indicator icon that points in their direction. If you’re still unsure where they are, then check the map by pressing the touch pad. These NPCs will hand you wood which you need to bring back to Geoffrey. He will then reward you with a Meteorite and Gil Bug
Fanning Embers – Greatwood Part 1
This quest starts with a cutscene in which the party enters the Greatwood. You will be attacked by a pack of Worgen after walking the path for a few seconds. A few more cutscenes will play shortly after. The first of which will reveal Fafnir, a giant lizard boss that you will have to fight later on. Continue along the path after these scenes to find a new type of wyvern enemy known as the Dragon Aevis.
It is a dragon-like monster with a few basic attack patterns; a scratch, a tail swing, and shooting a fireball from its mouth. Dragon Aevis will usually drop a Dragon Talon, some Sharp Fangs, and Wyrrite when defeated. Those are useful for crafting. Afterwards, you will need to pass through a tiny cave. There will be another wolf encounter before coming across the Fafnir boss fight.
Controlling Torgal
Torgal can be controlled two different ways/ The first is by pressing left on the d-pad. Your friendly hound companion can perform a few tricks on your command. This includes; howling to heal you slightly, sic to attack, and ravage to use a stronger attack. Holding in the left joystick will result in Torgal guiding you to the direction you need to go. This can be very helpful when traversing the later half of the Greatwoods since it can be easy to get lost.
While not necessary to complete the mission, players should note that they can in fact pet this wonderful hound. Doing so a few times will unlock one of FFXVI‘s achievements, fittingly titled “You Can Pet The Dog”. One of the petting animations even includes feeding a treat to this adorably fluffy friend.
Fafnir Boss Fight Tips
- This mighty opponent mainly fights with its claws. Dodge backwards, and then go in for a strike right after.
- Perform a sideways dodge to avoid its roll attack, and then dodge backwards when it is about to slam its belly on the ground.
- This boss shouldn’t be too difficult, but remember to use potions if you run low on HP. Assuming you didn’t modify them in the menu, up on the d-pad will be for using potions, right will be high potions, and down will be Stoneskin Tonic. The latter will increase your defense by 30% for 90 seconds.
- You also have a few Strength Tonics in your inventory which will increase your power by 10% for 60 seconds. Use these to deal extra damage.
Fanning Embers – Greatwood Part 2
The second half of the woodlands has two new types of enemies; Hornets and Vampire Thorns. This means you’ll have to deal with four different types of common enemies on your way to the final boss of this area. Thankfully, Scarlet Cyclone is a wonderful attack that can hit all foes around you. Use it by holding R2 and then pressing triangle. Cid will start using lightning attacks during this segment.. Keep following Torgal to eventually come across the final loading zone.
Now would be a good time to upgrade your stats in the main menu since you likely have quite a bit of unspent ability points. Try to get Charged Magic and Burning Blade as soon as possible since they allow you to charge both your magic and physical sword attacks. You can also equip powerful accessories such as the Badge of Might to increase attack by 7 and the Badge of Mettle from an earlier side quest. Prepare to assassinate an assassin once you progress the main quest. You’ll see a cutscene that elaborates on a few villain’s motives before a few soldiers spot Clive, Cid, and Torgal.
Midnight Raven Boss Tips
- Take out the weaker knights known as the Royal Sigfreyr first so that they don’t get in the way of your lock on.
- Press L1 to lock onto Midnight Raven, but be wary of this foe’s ability to teleport out of sight. You’ll have to relock on again after they teleport.
- You can use Phoenix Shift with the circle button to get in close.
- There will be a few quick time (cinematic clash) events in which you’ll need to spam the square button.
