Fishing is a new side activity added with Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. It unlocks after you reach Skovos and meet Shi Yugong, the fisherman who introduces the system through a short questline.
Fishing is simple once unlocked, but the questline becomes more involved when you reach The One That Got Away quest, which asks you to catch six rare yellow fish across different Sanctuary regions.
1. How to Fish in Diablo IV
Fishing in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred is unlocked through Shi Yugong’s questline and is done from the emote wheel, not from a fishing rod in your inventory. After catching a fish, you must pick it up and use it from the Consumables tab so it counts for quests and the Fishing collection.
- Stand near a valid fishing spot, such as a dock, river, lake, beach, pond, coast, or pier.
- Open the emote wheel and select Cast Fishing Line. If it is missing, add it to the wheel manually.
- Wait for the bite cue, then press the reel input quickly when the water splashes or the icon appears.
- Pick up the fish or item after it lands on the ground.
- Open Consumables, use the fish to register it, then check the quest tracker or Collections → Challenges → Fishing to confirm it counted.
2. How to Unlock Fishing
Fishing unlocks after you reach Skovos during the Lord of Hatred campaign. Early in the expansion, you receive a priority-style quest called Fishing, which sends you to Shi Yugong. He is found in the south of Philios, near the coast, at a dock where he teaches you the fishing system.
- Start the Lord of Hatred campaign and progress until you reach Skovos.
- Continue the early Skovos quests until the Fishing quest appears.
- Travel to the south of Philios and follow the quest marker to Shi Yugong.
- Speak to Shi Yugong at the dock.
- Stand near the water and use Cast Fishing Line from the emote wheel.
- Catch your first fish, pick it up, then use it from the Consumables tab to register it.
After this, fishing becomes available as a side activity, and Shi Yugong’s questline continues with more specific fish objectives.
3. Fishing Questline Overview
Shi Yugong’s questline starts with a tutorial quest and then expands into collection-style objectives. The early quests can be completed around Skovos, while The One That Got Away sends you across multiple Sanctuary regions to catch specific Rare fish.
| Quest | Main Objective |
|---|---|
| Fishing | Meet Shi Yugong and catch your first fish |
| Favor for a Favor | Catch Kokalodon, Silverbelly, and Darkling |
| The One That Got Away | Catch six Rare yellow-text fish across Sanctuary |
| The Fish of Dreams | Follow-up quest after The One That Got Away |
4. How to Complete Favor for a Favor Quest
After your first successful catch, Shi Yugong gives you Favor for a Favor quest. This quest asks you to catch three specific fish: Kokalodon, Silverbelly, and Darkling. These can be caught around Skovos, so you do not need to travel across the entire world yet.
- Accept Favor for a Favor from Shi Yugong after completing the first Fishing quest.
- Stay near Shi Yugong’s fishing area in Skovos.
- Use Cast Fishing Line and keep fishing until you catch Kokalodon, Silverbelly, and Darkling.
- Pick up each fish after catching it.
- Open the Consumables tab and use each fish to add it to your collection.
- Speak to Shi Yugong again once all three fish count toward the quest.
5. How to Complete The One That Got Away
The One That Got Away is the first fishing quest that sends you across Sanctuary. Shi Yugong asks for six specific fish: Augur of Civo, Morayaga, Crookfish, Zakarati, Neme-Senga, and Drakonbeard.
These fish are tied to regions, not one exact fishing hole, so the correct method is to go to the required region and fish from a valid water source until the right fish appears.
- Accept The One That Got Away from Shi Yugong after completing Favor for a Favor.
- Travel to each required Sanctuary region.
- Fish from a valid water source in that region.
- Keep fishing until you catch the Rare yellow-text version of the required fish.
- Pick it up and use it from the Consumables tab.
- Check the quest tracker before leaving the region.
- Return to Shi Yugong after all six fish are added to your collection.
NOTE: You must catch the Rare yellow-text version of each fish. Other versions, including Unique or Legendary versions, may be useful for your collection, but they do not complete this quest objective.
6. All The One That Got Away Fish Locations
The fish for The One That Got Away are region-specific. You can catch them from any valid fishing spot in the correct region, but the locations below are reliable spots close to known towns or waypoints.
| Fish | Region | Good Fishing Spot |
|---|---|---|
| Augur of Civo | Dry Steppes | Beach west of Ked Bardu |
| Morayaga | Fractured Peaks | Bridge on the east side of Yelesna |
| Crookfish | Hawezar | Walkway on the east side of Backwater |
| Zakarati | Kehjistan | Docks on the southwest side of Gea Kul |
| Neme-Senga | Nahantu | Pier on the west side of Kurast Docks |
| Drakonbeard | Scosglen | Pier on the west side of Marowen |
Best Route for Fishing
- Start with the region where you already have the closest waypoint unlocked.
- Go to the listed beach, bridge, dock, pier, pond, or walkway.
- Fish until you catch the required Rare yellow-text fish.
- Use the fish from the Consumables tab immediately after catching it.
- Confirm the quest tracker updates before moving to the next region.
- Return to Shi Yugong after all six fish have been counted.
7. How Fish Collections Work

| Total Fish Variants | 117 |
| Completion Goal | Catch and register every fish |
