Nintendo Direct September 2022: Everything You Need to Know

A brand new Nintendo Direct debuted on the 13th of September 2022. With it has come a barrage of updates and announcements for a ton of upcoming Nintendo titles, including some surprises that are sure to please fans far and wide.

Nintendo Direct September 2022: Everything You Need to KnowAfter several months of waiting, Nintendo has finally given us another Nintendo Direct to sink our teeth into. This Direct was live-streamed on the 13th of September and featured roughly 40 minutes of Nintendo releases, with most of it focused on releases coming in the Winter period.

Let’s get into the announcements.

Nintendo Direct – 13/09/2022

Fire Emblem: Engage

The first reveal of the Nintendo Direct was a brand new mainline Fire Emblem game. This is Fire Emblem: Engage.

This is a new game with the familiar tactics-based gameplay of titles like Three Houses and Awakening. Despite this, it seems to have an art style most similar to Fire Emblem: Heroes, the gacha mobile game. The grittier style adopted by Three Houses has been lost for a more vibrant style.

Fire Emblem: Engage

In Engage, you play a character called Alear. According to the trailer, they have been asleep for over a thousand years and have awoken in a time of great chaos. The world they inhabit, Elios, is under siege by the Fell Dragon. In times past, warriors of Elios summoned warriors and heroes from other ages (past Fire Emblem characters like Marth) called Emblems to help aid them in their fight.  Alear’s goal seems to be to collect several rings which connect him to these past warriors to defeat the Fell Dragon.

Gameplay-wise, the Fire Emblem essentials all seem to be there. What’s new is some sort of fusion or partner attack with these Emblems of the past. Alear teams up with Marth and together they can perform special attacks, boost stats and offer unique skills.

Much like Three Houses, there will also be a HUB area where the player can roam and visit shops. You can change characters’ outfits, speak to your Emblems and it looks like you may even be able to tend to your farm.

Fire Emblem: Engage launches on January 20th 2023. There will also be a special Divine Edition, which comes with an artbook, steel case and more physical goodies.

Octopath Traveller 2

Octopath Traveller 2 is the sequel to the acclaimed HD-2D RPG Octopath Traveller.

As one of 8 different characters, ranging from a swordsman to a thief to a medic, you will explore the land of Solistia. The stories of these characters will overlap and intersect, creating new adventurers for you to embark upon. The characters you get to control are:

  • Hikari the Warrior
  • Agnea the Dancer
  • Partitio the Merchant
  • Osvald the Scholar
  • Throné the Thief
  • Temenos the Cleric
  • Ochette the Hunter
  • Cassti the Apothecary

These characters each have their own role to play in the beautiful world of Solistia. Just like the first game, Octopath Traveller 2 looks gorgeous and is pushing the Live-2D art style to its fullest. Each character also has unique Path actions depending on whether it is day or night, such as Hikari having access to the Challenge action in the day and the Bribe action at night.

The game will retain its classic turn-based combat approach, with equally flashy effects and creatures to combat.

Octopath Traveller 2 launches on February 24th 2023.

New N64 Online Games

A slew of new N64 games is making their way to the N64 Online service.

The first of which is Mario Party 1-3 which brings the hate-your-friends simulator to the Switch system. Some of these maps were featured in the recent Mario Party: Superstars game but now all three, including their mini-games, are playable on N64 Online.

Pilot Wings 64 and 1080 Snowboarding also make their way to the service alongside Excitebike 64. Pokémon Stadium 1 and Pokémon Stadium 2 are coming. These games will feature the original battles (without the ability to transfer over any Pokémon) and the mini-game components. Both of which are available to play online.

Perhaps the most exciting release is that Golden Eye 64 is making its long-awaited return. This will come to Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles. However, this title will support online multiplayer only on the Nintendo Switch. Considering the licensing agreements around this game, it is surprising to see it here at all.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the Nintendo Direct is the reveal of PIKMIN 4. 7 years after its first announcement, it is finally a reality.

We only got a brief snippet of gameplay and only a small look at a screenshot but Shigeru Miyamoto was there to give us a bit of extra information. The game will feature a new camera: while the older titles had you relatively high up, watching the Pikmin from above, you will now fight alongside them from a ground view.

Miyamoto also emphasises how the Nintendo Switch will make controlling PIKMIN 4 easier than it has ever been. You can simply focus on commanding and controlling the Pikmin at your disposal.

PIKMIN 4 will launch sometime in 2023.

Players can play as Kirby, Waddle-Dee, King Dedede or Meta Knight as you battle through the world of Dreamland. In this version of the game, every player can also play as Kirby with all of his copy abilities. You can play locally on the same console with up to 4 people.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The final big piece of news from the Direct was the most highly anticipated. The sequel to the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild finally got some new gameplay, as well as an official title and release date.

It will now be called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, following from the motif set by the first game. In the brief bit of gameplay we saw, we got to see some more exploration of the sky islands that Link and the player will traverse throughout the game.

Other details hinting at the story were also revealed. The beginning of the trailer showcased an intricate mural featuring designs and iconography most similar to that found in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Aside from that, the official logo was finally revealed, featuring both a rusting Master Sword and the iconic symbol of an Ouroboros.

Lastly, the game was given an official release date. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will launch on the 12th of May 2023.

Finally, the first Splatfest theme was announced for Splatoon 3. This will be a three-way contest with the theme of what would you take to a deserted island: Gear, Grub or Fun?
