John Romero’s SIGIL Is Getting Remastered

Doom's unofficial fifth episode is getting a surprise update. There will be a new level included and Doom collectors are in for a treat. The limited version of Sigil will have a new box design and include new accessories. Time to revisit hell, and experience Sigil in its new form.

Doom creator John Romero is planning on updating his unofficial Doom add-on. Sigil was Romero’s take on the original Doom’s fifth episode and is getting remastered. The add-on was originally released on May 31, 2019, and it also has been featured on Nightdive’s Doom+ Doom II port.

In a Twitch stream, Romero announces a surprising update on his fifth episode for Doom. “We’re running out of those original boxes. We had to start making some new ones,” Romero explained.

Romero figured if his team is planning on making new limited physical release versions of Sigil, there should new stuff included.

A New Map to Play!

Sigil will also be getting an additional level which will be the second secret level. The remastered edition will have a revamped box design and new collectable items.

The incomplete map was shown to fans. It will feature the dark and gloomy atmosphere that Sigil is known for. When the new level is done, the remastered version will be ready for release.

The new level will only be accessible to those that finished the original secret level. When finishing the second secret level, players will be warped to Sigil’s penultimate map.

During the livestream, fans asked if the new level will be for free of charge and not exclusive to the remastered edition.

“I would probably put that out for free,” Romero said. “We still have to figure out all the fine details on that.” The free version would most likely feature a MIDI track, and hasn’t been confirmed whether it will be a reused or new track.

The Doom Creator Is Busy

The original Sigil did garner a sequel as Sigil II. Just like the original Sigil, the sequel was an additional episode for the original Doom. The sequel was recently updated to Nightdive’s Doom ports.

The Doom creator is currently working on a new first-person shooter for the Uneral Engine 5. He also has plans on making a sequel to Sigil II as Hellion. Hellion will feature 32 levels for Doom II, and one of the levels is currently playable.
